We played a more awesome jazzified version of this song at my school for our Christmas concert. My friend actually put it on YouTube- it's my maraiah1212 and it's called my Christmas concert.
I like it slower. But as long as the notes sustain for a little longer. Blue Knights did it about this speed and it was one of my all time DCI favorites.
You guys are so funny with your comments. This is a group of adults who are not professionals. We all have other jobs. Many of the choir are in their 60 and 70's . and yes I probably could have played this when I was in the 6th grade as well. I am physician who plays the horn for fun.
@bmillig LOL - I saw this in Arles, the locals gave the performance hell all through the performance - I just think that it is one of those pieces. Bravo!
@fearless7nicku Agreed. Actually I think I perfer the begining very dynamic. then the next part I think it should start reletively fast then accelerando to a faster pace and keep that up. then a final accel. and the end. thats how I would do it
I highly doubt your elementary orchestra has two bassoonists. I highly doubt your elementary string players have the endurance to play so many double stops. I highly doubt your elementary orchestra has two oboists. If you do, please videotape, I'd like to see the brilliant young orchestra.
Our orchestra uses a snare with the snare off, but then later a tambourine... I think we have a much different version than this. This orchestra is way better than ours tho.
destnai, you know the part from ummm, i think it was measure 180 or 188..... i tried to do it fast but i still mess up most of the time and get really frustrated..... oh well thanks for your advice i'll try my best
colintay909, do you mean the tamborine at 0:39? I'm playing this piece with our local orchestra and we are also using a tamborine, why do you say it is meant to be played with a snare drum? Thanks is advance.
Actually, Bizet wanted a tambourin. Tambourins are a French type of tabor, which were deep drums that resemble snare or tenor drums. The "tambourin" is not the same as the "tambourine", which has metal "jingles".
I played this today for districts

Much too slow

I think it sounds better slower than faster. It lets the heavier bass and alto notes ring out more.

Oh My God SOOOOOO SLOW!!
were playing this song about twice as fast in our 7th grade orchestra
15haseln 1 year ago
@15haseln Maybe that's because seventh graders don't have the control to play slow.

then you would be playing it somewhat incorrectly - or at least not exactly how Bizet wanted...

@supercomputernred and you are a mind reader? Back in Bizet's time tempo like adante and presto were subjective.

i have this piece and it's hard to get the notes right at a really fast pace which unfortunately is the pace our teacher wants us to do.......help!
bestartist12 2 years ago
Have you tried to play the song in a different hand position in certian places?
Our teacher had us do that, and it helped alot.
