@MOHAMMEDthePAEDO I think pretty much everyone celebrates Christmas. It's more of a secular event nowadays. Are you a Daily Mail reader by any chance? I could see them running with a "Muslims cancel Christmas" headline.
@MayChild8 I'm not Russian and I've only had a brief look into but it seems that in recent years Christmas is celebrated in Russia. During the communist days, it was discouraged by the government so traditions were moved to the new year to keep them alive. You're probably right about the Santa thing.

This song was used in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. That's why it seems so Christmassy! Ah, I may be 18 but I still think Christmas is the best season ever. As I've grown older, I have been less interested in the presents and more into the family all being together. Anyway, hope everyone has a great Christmas! :)
My orchestra is playing this at a christmas concert this year. The viola part is quite strange sounding on its own, but sounds really good w/ the rest of the instruments.
PS. It reminds me waking up early running down the stairs to fling open presents :3
Just read Wellychef's comment: Greg Lake "I Believe in Father Christmas"..that answers my questions. Greg Lake's song takes me back to the wonderful days when my children were children and we had Happy Christmas times.
@granbranfan I have to play "I Believe in Father Christmas" every year - the lyrics tug at the ol' heartstrings "A peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell - eyes full of tinsel and fire......" gets me every time! I have since bought a recording of Prokofiev that had Lieutenant Kije on it. Didn't realize that Lake had "borrowed" from it for Father Christmas and was very pleasantly surprised!
@allegropizzicato I totally agree with you; I know exactly how you feel about this lovely music. I happened to hear Prokofiev on Sirius Classics and wondered why it reminded me of past Christmases. Did research on Google and You Tube and found out!
I wish there was a "love it" button. This has been a favorite of mine since I was a child. I first head it in a Wood Allen movie and ever since then it just makes me want to dance around. Adore it thank you for putting this up for us to enjoy!
Can any musical experts tell me the technical term for the melody at 0.45-0.53 and 1.14-1.22? I would hazard a guess at it being an unresolved minor chord, but I don't have any technical knowledge. I'm a techno music fan and I want to make a song that has elements of this sound. Many thanks x
Sounded like a sax to me too, but there is a technique you can use with double reed instruments that makes it sound a little bit.... what are the words... less precise, which is maybe why it's a kind of saxophone sound.
Yes, it is a saxophone. Prokofiev included a saxophone in the orchestra for this piece. It's often played by the bass clarinet or third clarinet player who can usually also play saxophone.
Saxophone parts 1:22 - 1:35 ... never heard sax part in orch. ... again at 2:11 - 2:22 though I started to think, "Okay, that's just a bassoon or something whose timbre I'm just not that familiar with like bass clarinet" - but no, man, that's a sax, I swear ta gawd
Fabulous! Thanks so much for posting - I agree with Teknomonster, this always brings a smile to my face. Best wishes of the season to one and all and thanks for posting amtrow! :)
