I only really had a problem with series 8. They broadcast 8 episodes but the first episode was split into three and then there was the "Pete" episode which really didn't deserve to be in two parts, they could have left that for the last one, the whole mirror universe was a nice story that could have been explored more over a two parter.
If I had to pick a fault with series 7, it was the Duct Soup episode, it was easily the worst one IMO with "Blue", Ace Rimmer and the JFK episodes being faves
Honestly if Series X is anything like Back to Earth, I'd rather not see it come back at all.
More Heroic and Responsible Lister > Pining For Kochanski Lister. Come on Dave, bros before hoes. Plus she's a lousy smeg, I know. All you really need is your mates and your curry, man.
@ShaunsBlogs The thing I have found is that almost all fans hate series 7 - 8, but series 6 is either loved or hated. I think there is definately classic moments but I call it crappy because it lost all the qualities that made series 3 - 5 amazing. It's by no means bad and I respect peoples opinions and although I laughed just as much as previous series I didn't enjoy them as much. The last great thing Rob Grant did.
@stellaCURRYsorted and thelast ones were just a bit of fun. especially making out there was a series nine to piss people off, looking for something that wasn't there!
Red Dwarf is one of the funniest and most clever comedies the BBC has been able to string together. Series 1,2 were nothing special (still rather funny though) but then from the 3rd series onwards it was brilliant with every episode hysterical. Series 3,4,5 and 6 were exceptionally hilarious, but then what happened with series 7 and 8? Doug Naylor obviously isn't capable of writing a funny Red Dwarf script without the aid of Rob Grant. 'Smoke me a kipper skipper, I'll b back for breakfast' ;P
I'll add one more thing.. for comedy writers red dwarfs changing style of production has been such a gift. There is a real psychology to film and comedy writing.. I work vis effects in oz, red dwarf was a major inspiration.. I have a scifi sitcom that has now attained funding and red dwarf has been a great training ground. eg. I never would understand the strengths of canned laughter, character conflict, live audiences or how a ship made of coke bottles holds against cgi, its amazing.
It was good, started slow and finished well. it required the audience to have seen Blade Runner.. that was essential and I understand why many didnt like it.. they didnt comprehend the extent this was a homage to Blade Runner, would have been slow otherwise. If I could recommend something to the cast "dont forget this series is primarily based around the love/hate relationship of rimmer and lister.. if you lose the insults you lose the conflict we need in the series.", a very intelligent return.
Disagree.. none of the Red Dwarf episodes ar eCRAP? True they got worse as they went along, but this new Special Episode is very good, just like a short movie version! Very nice... well I liked it anyway ;o)
Why are people rating down comments about how shit series 7 and 8 were? They WERE shit!! Nowhere near as good as the older ones. Any fan should know this!
This new one will probably be shit too, but i hope it's not.
"Series 7 and 8 were shit!! Nowhere near as good as the older ones" Agreed, and the reason why is 'cause one of the writers left. I'm preparing myself for disappointment again as only one of the writers is involved again. Out of respect for the quality series of the past, it shouldn't be made anymore. There's a right time to stop and I thought Grant/Doug had when he said 'no' to the offer of Hugh Grant (not personally) playing Rimmer in a Red Dwarf movie.
im preparing myself for disappointment too, hopefully the episodes will be like the old ones. Don't need any CGI crap, The crappy sets and props are one thing that makes the old red dwarf funny!
"The crappy sets and props are one thing that makes the old Red Dwarf funny!" :-) I've always liked the home-camera look the old Red Dwarf has too, and there's something special about the models as they're not used anymore. It's like replacing Wallace and Gromit with CGI, it would be appauling.
yep, it is so true, I really hope they dont ruin the new episodes :(
I loved the old episodes, I never get bored with watching them. Must have watched them a million times each now. Except seried 7 and 8 of course cos theyre shit.
I hope its not as shit as the last few too, red dwarf was one of them crazy sci fi shows unique to the brits lets just hope they dont go as fucked as the black adder end one off time travel special, check out FAQ questions about time travel for some crazy new brit scifi.
I wasn't happy with it one bit. I smiled once during the water tank squid scene, otherwise it was boring. I had a feeling it may be. I will give it another try but I'm not confident. They showed the wild west computer virus episode after from 1993 which was hilarious. They're struggle to bring those days back.
i think there will be a movie, robert seemed to dismiss then got him quickly off the subject when he was asked about it, maybe he is sworn to secrecy...
I dislike a lot of my fellow Dwarf fans....they're just so damn precious, and the gripes with series 7 and 8 got blew out of all proportion by them, just as the odd Trek niggle ends up being the end of the world as we know it by Trekkies.
I see 7 & 8 exactly as Robert Llewellyn does when you see him talk on the box sets - about them only slightly extending the usual sitcom formula and it looking just a bit better being not a bad thing. For me, all the humour is still there, just as it ever was.
I fully agree on this. If what Doug Naylor comes up with is deemed 'terrible,' I can't imagine that any efforts made by rampaging fanboys and fangirls would be superior to the people who actually write the show.
It's a freaking comedy! Sure it's sci-fi as well, but are we really going to cry foul over continuity, inaccuracies and other pointless fluff in series that introduced us to the Groinal Attatchment and Mr . Flibble? (Now I'd bet he'd be very cross)
well any Dwarfer who expects a show that brought us the Holly Hop Drive to be technical perfection really is a fool unto themselves (or the continuity error of the Luck virus which was completely consumed, and yet a large amount of which survived until series VIII)
Apparantly Norman Lovett isn't going to do it, but the main four will. How could you have the show without any of the main four? Wouldn't be worth it.
Red Dwarf was always amazing. But the 7th series and 8th was a bit of a let down. I think the problem started when The hologram Rimmer left...an irreplacable character so they replaced him with Kochanski?...Big mistake made the 7th series very boring and the 8th a bit too bizarre and rushed. Still all amazing and enjoyable!
it sucked cause the main writer and co creater rob grant quit the show, and have even heard him said in interviews he though the 2 series after he left were terrable, plus the look of the show changed and the kochanski woman wasnt funny
yay=] does anyone know exact dates for the four specials because i heard it could be christmas but everywhere else i saw mid 2009. i hope its christmas cos i can't wait that long
wait, can anybody hear anything? Exactly! Nobody can hear anything. & do you know why we can't hear anything? Because there are no sounds to hear! hahaha
i am sure krytens nanobots can rebuild red dwarf, after series 8 when red dwarf blew up, or did rimmer get through the mirror to the other dimension after the machine broke which trapped him on an exploding red dwarf
I rekon they should do something along the lines of having both Kochanskis in the story,Clare Grogan and Cloe Annette.Anyway thanks for uploading this
No matter what anybody says, RD with live on forever, I couldn't imagine life without it, it was fantastic then and can still be fantastic now, they just need to keep it alive, ofcourse the original cast can't live forever, but neither can we, I like to think we have grown up with the Crew and will follow then into our final Years on this Planet, it is just a classic Show that has such a huge fan base, it will inevitably carry on, wether it will stay true to it's original form remains to be seen
if there is a series 9 then i hope they go back to basics by killing off the crew and kochanski and have just the original cast and norman lovett as holly
Francoisthehobo is right, red dwarf used to be brilliant but after Rob Grant left at the end of series 6 the show went down the pan. series 7 with kotchanski completely ruined the dynamic of the show, and what Doug Naylor was thinking in bring back the entire crew from the dead in series 8 only him and god know. Rip Red Dwarf your sorely missed but the show can never match the brilliance of the first 6 series.
Thank you Elhock, I don't like being negative just for the sake of it but the last two series were just painful for me, i was a fan right from the start and sorely miss the original line up (series 2 was my personal fav) And as Holly says in Thanks for the memory..."some things are best left buried". Peace
absolutely, i would have loved to have seen another season, but the story arcs after Rob Grant left were pretty poor, and despite some decent gags, the whole thing left me feeling empty like a can of tennants in the hands of a homeless person on a hot july day.
Face it, any new Red Dwarf is going to suck. Seeing what happened to the show in series 7&8was painful, like watching a once witty and intelligent loved one go senile and incontinent.
spot on-right after that one good episode in series 7 "tikka to ride" the quality plummeted,I think there was enough quality in the whole of both series 7 and 8 for about four good episodes.
2. 'jumped the shark'? anychance of you using more modern language than the 1970's?
3. with Kochanski, could you really imagine claire grogan reacting as comically as chloe annett did to "have a happy period2? it wouldnt have worked...
4. YESSSSSSSSSS!!! (again!)
and 5. im very glad their continuing this off of the ending for 'only the good' they used, cos the alternate ending wouldnt have worked as a cliff hanger...
I've got such mixed feelings about this. I love RD to bits, it's my all-time favourite comedy show...I was a bit confused at how they left it at the end of S8 but I thought it was still a cool way to 'end' it - Rimmer kicking Death in the balls :D I'm now worried that they'll bring it back with them all being so much older and it won't be the same (like they did with Vicar of Dibley and Only Fools)... xx
Agreed. I wonder about the possibility of Rob Grant's involvement? He and Doug Naylor reunited to complete an unfinished script for a recent Series 1 DVD release, so who knows?
Losing Clare Grogan was a bad move. How ironic they brought in you-know-who just for the potential film, only for it to never happen due in part to her replacement.
Yep. She was quite a coup for the show because she was famous before Red Dwarf. People of Lister's age would have already fancied her from her career as a pop starlet in the band Altered Images - think Britney of the early 80s in Britain. See if you recognise her from this appearance on Top of the Pops:
I prefered the original Kochanski. She seemed more in Lister's league. Chloe was ok but she just seemed so out of place, especially in Series 7. It didn't help that Kryten became so annoying and whiney either. xx
We still don't know what kind of "special" this will be, and some rumours are that it will just be a kind of celebratory "clips show" with new stuff in between. I hope it'll be more standalone than that though, and it won't just feel like a kind of "smeg ups" video or the irritating "can't smeg won't smeg" novelty cookery programme. We'll have to keep an eye out for reliable updates.
Oh my god! I still can't believe that they're finally making something new!!! Oh, now I definitely cannot wait until 2009!!!!! It is in episode format though, right? It's not gonna be like interviews and such? Anyways, can't wait to hear more on this!
I totally agree with you on the glossiness needing to be lost... It just isn't Dwarf when it's all polished! You should be able to see a couple of mics bobbing into camera on the top of the screen! Kochanski, with the original personality and not the snooty one, could somewhat work, just needs an attitude change. I think that if they got Rob Grant back it would be great, it went downhill in series 7 when others started writing scripts too. They just didn't work the same way Grant Naylor did.
I disagree; if they're going to go for a cinematic atmosphere, then this can work really well with the Red Dwarf world but they should take it all the way if this is what they want - they should lose the audience laughter altogether, and really work to get the mood of the programme as filmic as possible (it helped emphasise the loneliness of space in series VII). I think they compromised too much with series VII, keeping it half in sitcom land, which was where all the most lazy humour was!
1-It's not an "American" style - it is a style of film effect, single camera and careful lighting, which they pretty much dropped for series VIII anyway. If they'd been creative and taken the risk of not using audience laughter for series VII it would have been a much tighter series and probably not had so many daft "sitcom" elements inserted into it, making it funnier altogether.
wasnt their fault really, chris barrie reached the end of his contract and wanted to concentrate on the brittas empire and only do cameo in that series, the brittas went under and he returned for series 8...roll on series 9
on Kochanski... Chloe's Kochanski was from a different dimension, remember? that's the differences there... and she was still pretty hilarious... But yeah, Grogan was a better Kochanski, I think in general... and Kryten HAD to become whiney... and it added a new dimension and emotion to his character... I loved series 7 and 8, different Kochanski and all... Super fan!
2-Kochanski is part of the team now and they're unlikely to drop Chloe Annett at this stage. The atmosphere is one of reunion, and everyone will want to be included and nobody will be turned away. I'd say it was her introduction that damaged the show (Lister is no longer the last human and he has the woman of his dreams and isn't doing anything about it) but keeping her on board won't change things now the damage is done.
3-I gather Rob Grant doesn't want any future involvement in the show.
so it IS happening, :D im still gonna be all the more happier when theres an official announcement on the site tho, but this is awesome :D what else was said on the interview?
Thanks for posting this! I was one of the fortunate few who got through as a caller. Do you have any of the rest of them segment recorded? I'd love to see more.
as i always say, the only reason people don't like series 7 is because of the absence of the best character

Red Dwarf I was alright if a bit tediously boring.
Red Dwarf II was better with the best actual plots.
Red Dwarf III was great, better sets and costumes and some great stories.
Red Dwarf IV was good but not all the episodes are good.
Red Dwarf V was awesome with great writing and character development.
Red Dwarf VI was a bit crap in places but still good.
Red Dwarf VII was totally awful.
Red Dwarf VIII was better but not amazing.
Overall, Series II to V are the best.

series I & II i think are brilliant. the crappy sets and costumes are the best part of it.
vintage.
series III, IV & V great sets, better story lines, and better costumes. probably the best era.
VI ok. didn't like that there was no holly or red dwarf, but still good.
VII shouldn't have brought back kochanski, even if it was to increase their chances of making a film.
probably the weakest, but stil some great scenes.
VIII a bit of redemption for the integrity of the show. it was ok.

ferret0147 3 years ago

Robert Llewellyns laugh is a lot different from krytens--ive often wondered if he does have the high pitched "hurr hurr hurr hurr" XD

if there is a series 9 then i hope they go back to basics by killing off the crew and kochanski and have just the original cast and norman lovett as holly

Rip Red Dwarf your sorely missed but the show can never match the brilliance of the first 6 series.

never a truer word spoken about RD

Thank you Elhock, I don't like being negative just for the sake of it but the last two series were just painful for me, i was a fan right from the start and sorely miss the original line up (series 2 was my personal fav) And as Holly says in Thanks for the memory..."some things are best left buried". Peace
houlden33 3 years ago
absolutely, i would have loved to have seen another season, but the story arcs after Rob Grant left were pretty poor, and despite some decent gags, the whole thing left me feeling empty like a can of tennants in the hands of a homeless person on a hot july day.

new red dwarf is going to de so cool, but it wont be as good as the original red dwarf, but will be good

Face it, any new Red Dwarf is going to suck. Seeing what happened to the show in series 7&8was painful, like watching a once witty and intelligent loved one go senile and incontinent.
Francoisthehobo 3 years ago
spot on-right after that one good episode in series 7 "tikka to ride" the quality plummeted,I think there was enough quality in the whole of both series 7 and 8 for about four good episodes.

1. YESSSSSSSSSS!!!
2. 'jumped the shark'? anychance of you using more modern language than the 1970's?
3. with Kochanski, could you really imagine claire grogan reacting as comically as chloe annett did to "have a happy period2? it wouldnt have worked...
4. YESSSSSSSSSS!!! (again!)
and 5. im very glad their continuing this off of the ending for 'only the good' they used, cos the alternate ending wouldnt have worked as a cliff hanger...
p.s. 6. YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!

I've got such mixed feelings about this. I love RD to bits, it's my all-time favourite comedy show...I was a bit confused at how they left it at the end of S8 but I thought it was still a cool way to 'end' it - Rimmer kicking Death in the balls :D I'm now worried that they'll bring it back with them all being so much older and it won't be the same (like they did with Vicar of Dibley and Only Fools)... xx
APrincessRose 3 years ago
Agreed. I wonder about the possibility of Rob Grant's involvement? He and Doug Naylor reunited to complete an unfinished script for a recent Series 1 DVD release, so who knows?
David8693 3 years ago
There's nothing to be worried about. RD already jumped the shark after season 6 anyway.
JackTraven2525 3 years ago
it "jumped the shark" because YOU say so? you're not the end be all and end all of the RD community.

Losing Clare Grogan was a bad move. How ironic they brought in you-know-who just for the potential film, only for it to never happen due in part to her replacement.
Bring back Clare!
tinstareel 3 years ago
Whose Clare Grogan? Was she the original Kochanski?
And I call myself a fan *tut* xx
APrincessRose 3 years ago

It didn't help that Kryten became so annoying and whiney either. xx
APrincessRose 3 years ago
Chloe Annett has to be in it. You wanna find out if her and Dave ever get back together.
And, we all fancy the pants offa her :D

Dam dam dam.. I usually watch twit live but haven't had time this week. Is the entire interview anywhere? Need to see the whole thing now.
joeynessily 3 years ago
We still don't know what kind of "special" this will be, and some rumours are that it will just be a kind of celebratory "clips show" with new stuff in between. I hope it'll be more standalone than that though, and it won't just feel like a kind of "smeg ups" video or the irritating "can't smeg won't smeg" novelty cookery programme. We'll have to keep an eye out for reliable updates.

Top 3 things to do..........
1- Lose the American style, too glossy!
2- Lose bloody Katchanski!
3- Get Rob Grant back, quick!
Regardless of what ANYONE says, the last 2 series were pretty poor by Dwarf standards and some of the scripts were severly lacking.
No more silly girl talk and no more yank style cameras and over blown budget and it could be good.
Otherwise, no thanx!
imperialpod 3 years ago 4
I totally agree with you on the glossiness needing to be lost... It just isn't Dwarf when it's all polished! You should be able to see a couple of mics bobbing into camera on the top of the screen! Kochanski, with the original personality and not the snooty one, could somewhat work, just needs an attitude change. I think that if they got Rob Grant back it would be great, it went downhill in series 7 when others started writing scripts too. They just didn't work the same way Grant Naylor did.
carcar2110 3 years ago
I disagree; if they're going to go for a cinematic atmosphere, then this can work really well with the Red Dwarf world but they should take it all the way if this is what they want - they should lose the audience laughter altogether, and really work to get the mood of the programme as filmic as possible (it helped emphasise the loneliness of space in series VII). I think they compromised too much with series VII, keeping it half in sitcom land, which was where all the most lazy humour was!
feckingbillgates 3 years ago
1-It's not an "American" style - it is a style of film effect, single camera and careful lighting, which they pretty much dropped for series VIII anyway. If they'd been creative and taken the risk of not using audience laughter for series VII it would have been a much tighter series and probably not had so many daft "sitcom" elements inserted into it, making it funnier altogether.

Series 7 would have worked if Rimmer had stayed!
mellowNdark 3 years ago 3
Definately!
Losing Rimmer was a BAD move!
imperialpod 3 years ago
wasnt their fault really, chris barrie reached the end of his contract and wanted to concentrate on the brittas empire and only do cameo in that series, the brittas went under and he returned for series 8...roll on series 9
jaffmangoth 3 years ago
ALSO....
on Kochanski... Super fan!
zerocool1871 3 years ago
2-Kochanski is part of the team now and they're unlikely to drop Chloe Annett at this stage. The atmosphere is one of reunion, and everyone will want to be included and nobody will be turned away. I'd say it was her introduction that damaged the show (Lister is no longer the last human and he has the woman of his dreams and isn't doing anything about it) but keeping her on board won't change things now the damage is done.
3-I gather Rob Grant doesn't want any future involvement in the show.
