a new gundam movie is set to come out late 2010 i think its called unicorn mobile suit gundam or something along those lines and is being made by hollywood i think hopefully with todays technology they will pull it off it would be nice seeing how succesful transformers was and that involved robots! we will see

I personally enjoyed the movie, it had some humor and good insight for character development. Sure the acting was to be desired but I did like it, For a '02 Movie based on Mobile Suits and a Gundam movie at that it was pretty impressive for its time...

Its technically not a gundam movie. The word "gundam" is never used in the movie and even though it was originally supposed to be a gundam movie bandai disowned it. Not saying it was a bad movie though. I do wish they had maintained some of the gundam style though, the mechs are all wrong except for the "g-saviour's" head.

It is possible that the reason why the cockpit appears ancient is because the mobile suit, in general, was too expensive to construct. Besides the actual mobile suit costs, it's cheaper and easier just to make that kind of cockpit for a live-action movie.

According to MAHQ this movie takes place UC223, 70 yrs after V Gundam(UC153) and 130 yrs after the events in Char's Counterattack(UC 93).It's possible that it's cheaper to produce a MS that has that kind of cockpit. Of course like you said, it was 1998 and it would be easier and cheaper for the special effects team to just use a more primitive looking cockpit.

The movie came out in 2000 and looks like the last starfighter. The computer interface is wrong and so is a lot of the pretty standard gundam tech, also were is the famous lightning fast action I know and love from the gundam franchise?.
