First saw Ms. Connell about 30 years ago as Eboli in the ENO's Don Carlos, with Rita Hunter as Elisabeth de Valois. Connell was truly amazing, have not heard "O don fatale" as good as hers since. (Possibly Baltsa.)
I almost have never come across any recordings, offical ones, not those bootleg ones, that features Connell. Why has she been slighted by the international classical recording companies?
I remember her as a dramatic mezzo in London [what a Waltraute in Gotterdammerung!] ... some years later I saw her as half of Lady Macbeth at the Met [the opera was abandoned at the 2nd interval as someone committed suicide in the auditorium!!!]
What a radiant and imposing stage presence, with class, pathos, energy and a beautifully well preserved huge voice. It has retained its natural color, which is living evidence of a balanced, shrewd and well-managed career with a firm technique. A true example to younger generations of singers who sing just anything today! Thanks so much for posting.
I like Connell a lot. I find the tempo rather too fast. It almost sounds rather more like talking than singing in some phrases. Probably saving the voice for the big notes which are good. But give me Nilson, Dimitrova and Marton any time. However, well done for such mature lady indeed
OK, she forgot the text here and there, and the phrasing was awkward in some places. THIS WOMAN MADE THIS ARIA SOUND EASY! Not since Marton have I heard this aria sung so well.
Elizabeth Connell has the most youthful and brilliant soprano sound for a 62 year old I've ever heard. It is a miracle that after such a long career and singing the heaviest of dramatic soprano rep that she is still singing so well. Her huge triumph at ROH last December was richly deserved....brava!
Vale to a great artist.
