They certainly had wonderful voices - lots of whistling & cossack dancing (listen to Kalinka). Their way of "complimenting" the British(Irish) contribution to WW2 was to sing 'It's a Long Way....' In one to one encounters I've found ordinary Russians very friendly and warm. @ballnafeighbluedog -several decades ago the Russian Army Male Voice Choir would make international tours. They certainly had wonderful voices - lots of whistling & cossack dancing (listen to Kalinka). Their way of "complimenting" the British(Irish) contribution to WW2 was to sing 'It's a Long Way....' Right tune. Wrong War. But they wouldn't have sounded right singing 'White Cliffs of Dover' Hope this helps.

Ok, I admit it, you've seen right through me. I feel inferior to Brits because my little country kicked their empire ass during the Irish War of Independence. I also feel inferior to Brits because my little country always scores higher than them in international economic and social surveys. The Irish deserved to be independent and the British government has not always acted in the right manner, with the 50,000 Irish dead in WW1 the British government should of shown its gratitude by giving independence.

@Elevationary RTE would take that angle. I knew my wife's granddad for a short time in the 1960's he was English & served in the North Lancashire Regt. Never talked much about it but when he went sick with trench foot - immersion in water for days meant his feet were shrivelling up & drowning. The Doctor said; "Got trench foot have you?" Picked up a surgical knife & pushed it through his sole until it came out the top of the foot. He never felt a thing & the Doctor agreed he had trench foot!

@helenaZZZZirlandaise fair do's my hibernian brother, but those of us still part of the empire (scotland, in my case), can also get laughs watching the Irish news. For example I was a news report of an Irish politican delivering a speech on the economic situation there. He ended his otherwise well rounded and thougt out talk with the words: "Besically, it's a fuc'ng mess, so it is."
I think if it like: everyone laughs at everyone else, so everybody's laughing. Same result :)

To continue my rambling.....I got to know a Russian lady who was a recent emigre' from Moscow. Irina Myakova was her name. She was impressive in her education and the fact that she spoke almost flawless English. I got to know her well enough to use the diminutive of her name....Irichika. I'm sure Russia has its share of uneducated, barely civilized clods...but we have those in the USA as well. I'm just glad that our two countries aren't at each others thoats now.

jerusalemden....Thanks for a measured response to what I posted. For some it might have been inflammatory. When I said "individuals" I was attempting to differentiate between the percieved "monolithic" government in Russia and the Russian citizens I've met in person. In one to one encounters I've found ordinary Russians very friendly and warm. I got to know some Russians in India when I used to travel there and I was impressed with their educational acumen and genuine warmth.

No, the Soviet army wasn't about to "take over the world".....After the collapse of the USSR in 1991 and foreign reporters as well as "diplomats" (spys) were allowed access to various "secret locations and documents" the USA discovered that the Russians weren't nearly as formidable as was thought. The entire world fell for a propaganda campaign worthy of Joseph Goebbels. I have nothing against individuals in Russia. I have two personal friends in Krasnoyarsk, husband and wife, doctors.

Well, we did have the ability to destroy the world, but apart from that... we didn't even win the war against CIA in Afganistan in the 80s... :) As for "individuals in Russia", as you chose to (so quaintly) call us... The Red Army was a bunch of peasants for the most part and didn't see anything wrong with raping German girls and women. I don't think the German soldiers were much better when they invaded Russia. Too bad the USA didn't bring it's massive forces in the Pacific to Europe and kick the barbarians back to Moscow. That would have prevented the Communist occupation of Eastern Europe. Somebody should have paid attention to Gen. Patton.
