  • To me the mods just seem to add extra gain, killing the way the ts9 is supposed to sound in the first place. Just get a pedal that has more gain, you dont have to buy a modded ts9 to do that do you? Of course the true bypass is a nice touch.

  • Great video. But my only question is why is there a "breast flexing" video in the related vids?

  • I could just listen to that clean tone all day

  • It appears to me the Keely sounds better because it has a higher output. Much of the issue is true bypass and whether you want slight increments of OD or heaps more. The Keely sold me simply because it is true bypass. No true bypass = no sale. Your clean still needs to be pure to maintain sonic flexibility. That's how I view the issue of OD pedals.

  • Great demo! Call me crazy but I like the keeley the least.

  • Hi.

Wich of these 3 would you recommend for rythm guitar?

I'm looking for some Oasis sound, but I am not good enough for doing solos :(

    Thanks for your answer :)

    Ps: I have an Epi ES-355 ...

  • Good job man on your demo. Most people that try to make a shoot out video have no concept of tone and therefore they don't mic correctly and don't let the guitar ring out for best comparison and over all have just the worst sound coming out of there amp so the video becomes pointless.Good job on all these points. It's obvious that you are an accomplished guitarist.Thx for the demo so we can make up our minds on choice of a pedal.

  • it may just be me, but i personally think the mods ruin a pedal that already doesn't sound great to begin with. I see you've got a tim on your board, for the price of any of these modded pedals, paul cochrane will gladly build you a pedal that blows all of these out of the water haha.

  • nice clean tone!

  • u turned the tone nob the wrong way?

to roll of the bass you turn it to the right

u said the mods have more bass but you gave the mmore base by turning the nob that way

  • @SixStringHarmonies do you think you could message me with more info on the mod or a link of the best place to mod it? I'm very interested in this but I wanna make sure I replace the right caps...

  • what do I have to do to get taht keeley sound? i want more girth.

  • @mr.4y. I'll take your side just because,

every sound guy just found their self's

so frustrated with me and my Mk1 Boogie.

Never let them mic me. All the complements I got, invitations to

play, and awards won..... I must of had it

right. BTW, Les Paul (R.I.P.) knew WTF he

was doing, so does Mike Fuller & Matt Johnson. Not to mention that INCREDIBLE

crew @ Strymon. To name a few.

  • Between the three the Keeley ftw. Keeley>Analog>stock.

  • The stock was by far the best sounding one.

  • don't waste your time.....maxon od-9 is the best ...

  • dude, the keelys true bypass part of his mod is one of the best things about his mod. But with this setup your guitar signal is going through the other pedals that dont have that mod so its not showing a true indication of what the keeley mod does. The keeley pedals sound better with the true bypass because it takes out a large part of the original circuit which sucks out tone.

  • i kinda like the stock one better

  • The Keeley Baked mod is designed to have much

more gain than an vintage 808. They have a "ts9 mod plus" that is supposed to sound like a vintage ts808.

  • @jabenn68 i have one that has both of these mods in one pedal from keeley but I dont know if they make it anymore.

  • @jabenn68 That would be cool, I like them both.

  • I asked a guy at G-Center, WHY a 1967 Strat goes for $20-50K but the 1967 Tele right next to it was only $7000.....and he said simply "Ever hear of this guy....named Jimi Hendrix?"

I thought about it....and you know....the ONLY reason anyone likes the Tube Screamers is because SRV told them to like them.

And the reason a WH1 goes for 700 is because Rage Against the Machine made the sound impossible to ignore.

If ANYONE wants my honest opinon: a stock EHX Muff is way way WAY better

  • @issofunky Nah man, the love for the Tube Screamer pre-dates SRV... I first heard of one due to Iron Maiden's Adrian Smith using one... but it goes back much further than that. It's a good medium-gain boost pedal, especially for pushing a good tube amp into serious beefy overdrive, like a JCM 800 or JMP head.

  • I have both the keely and analog man. I tend to use the analog man set with the gain at 11:00 or less and use that as my primary tone. The keely I have cranked and use that for solos. I'll also sometimes kick on the analog man and keeley at the same time just for fun to really shake things up.

The keely is a bit too bright for me as a main tone, but works well to cut through the mix. The analog man is perfect for the opposite. (use a fender deluxe reverb and a semi-hollowboy or strat)

  • the keely has the most distortion & bass ... at some point the modded version becomes another pedal ... I'd also like to hear your comments on feel and sustain since sometimes thats what changes what you can do with the pedal the most

  • @patfurlan Hi Pat. Funny you should end up here. Passenger95 and you have my favorite videos. Traynor-wise, I can't stop. I now have an ancient GuitarMateReverb, a YBA-2b and a YBA-4. And passenger95's Damage Control vids didn't help my wallet as I now have DC's Timeline, Liquid Blues and Demonizer.

  • @bobob13131 well I'm getting deep into the pedal mod thing now ... and finding some new sounds ...

some pedals like the dodod250 or yjm308 change completely when you swap the op amp ...

but at the end of the day you still have to play the dang things lol

  • With so many pedal options out there, modding is almost pointless.

  • @mr4y Ya, there's a ton of pedals out there...we live in a good time. haha That being said though, if someone likes the sound of a modded pedal, I think it's cool that those are out there as well. :-)

  • @mr4y LOL have a look at some of my videos ... the real context is live use or how they cut in a recording

subtle difference can translate into BIG differences when a drummer is bashing away ...

the keely & analog man shown here will pop right up in the mix compared to the stock pedal

  • @patfurlan You can do the same thing with EQ inside the track.

  • @mr4y right except I play live, and don't mike my amp ... after years of fooling with this stuff I get the finished product to the audience every time... beyond that FIX it In the MIX is total baloney

  • @patfurlan nobody was talking about fixing stuff in the mix. You must be hated by various FOH engineers for not miking you amp.

  • @mr4y I don't want to get into a flame war but I think you miss the basic point... you CAN improve the sound coming out of the guitar amp & more importantly you can improve the players sense of control, touch and comfort level with his sound ... this does more for the performance than EQ ing inside the track

Modding may seem pointless to you & thats cool... there was a time not so long ago where the options were Boss pedals or fragile vintage pedals . the mod industry has created the options

  • @patfurlan Still, a lot of FOH engineers should hate you for not miking your amp.

  • @mr4y I think modding makes a lot of sense regarding the sound to price issues with a lot of pedals. For example, you can make a 40 buck TS7 into a 180 dollar TS808 by changing 2 resistors.

  • Is it just me or is there a slight hint of tremolo effect in the keeley mod?

  • @onlyprnasneeded Maybe...could just be the sound waves hitting the mic. I'll listen again.

  • Very good demo my friend! You have an awesome clean sound so I'm sure that helps alot! Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate the different mods : )

  • @dvda0616 Thanks a bunch! :-)

  • Sound good is it me or does the stock ts9 sound better than the analog man ts9? Keeley sounded best but not as a main distortion. I only like the ts9 on top of my tube amp for extra volume in solos

  • @Whoelsewoulddie4u Ya, the Keeley is great for solos. :-)

  • @Whoelsewoulddie4u The Ibanez TS9 is a great design. That said, the only problem it suffers from (like most mass-market effects) is cheap internal components. The only mod necessary is purchase $10 worth of high-grade components and swap them out. Once I re-capped my TS9, it sounded AMAZING! With only two output buffer resistor value changes, it almost doubled the pedals output so it can drive an amp even harder. Changing the stock 5% resistors to 1% tolerance resistors and it gets EVEN BETTER!

  • If you´re into a deeper sounding TS you gotta´look into a 80's Korg OVD-1, same chip/circuit (most of it) w/o the vintage TS price. Just don´t check the demo here on YT, there´s only 1 and it´s total crap, nothin like the real thing.

  • @tonossordos Cool! Thanks, I'll check into that.

  • Can I have one? :D you got three there hehe :P

  • @StalinStudio haha I would, but I think I sold them all the week after I did this demo. lol

  • Throw them all away for a gun full-tube amp!!! The real rectifier sound kills any pedal. If the guitar and amp are pure, that's all you need. Use your settings on the guitar and amp. The range of sounds you get is incredible. Delay? Double pick your arpeggios!

  • @CTuxford Great perspective! I think there's room for the plugged straight-in sound, as well as for the effects pedals sound. They both have their place, and I've heard lovely tone from both. Have a great evening!

  • not a big TS fan. love my Timmy though. and my LP plays great with my Eternity Fuse. but an interesting demo. thanks.

  • @userboy6 No worries! And yes, the Timmy is quite lovely.

  • I have modded a tubescreamer and I have recently built my own tubescreamer with influenced keeley mods etc. they DO sound better compared to modern stock stuff!! I love a tubescreamer with more bass and that cool mod that allows the pedal to clean up more, I don't know why some say this is a bunch of crap??

  • @Fender1976uk I think it depends on the mod. I've heard good ones, and I've also heard ones that make no difference. Stoked that yours is working for ya!!

  • what kinda of speakers were in your amp brother? alnico blues?

  • @joshuarugg One Blue and one G12H30. :-)

  • All these mods these days for the tube screamer make me laugh. I'm not sure why there is sooo much focus on modding pedals in general. I have a feeling a lot of people are getting suckered out of their money. I've had 4 vintage ts-808s and let me tell ya... i got a stock ts-9 that sounds better than all of them.

  • @ifenderbender I agree, some of the mods are bogus.

  • Thanks for that, very revealing. And congratulations to all the modders out there who have made an entire industry out of spitting hairs and to their tone chasing customers who have supported free enterprise and entrepreneurial capitalism. You represent a living MBA-level case study in perceived value. USA! USA! USA!

  • thanks for doing this man. purchasing a ts9 next week with a bad switch. perfect project for a mod. i am seriously looking at a monte allums mod.

  • thanks for the review, I am hopefully trading a les paul case for a keeley moded TS9 this week. BTW, your ambient music is soothing.

  • @bradleynance No problem. Hope you dig the TS9. And thanks for the kind words on the music! :-)

  • My vote is also for the Keeley. It has more depth, and I like the light too. Nice and blinding. LOL

  • sorry, but after I saw that "Tim" on the pedalboard, I couldn't pay attention any more! Those things are awesome.

  • i prefer the MI Audio Blues Pro pedal over any of these tube screamers..check it out

MI Audio has some great stuff.

  • @MOSKII58 Cool! I've never played the Blues Pro, but I found both the Blues Boy and the Blues Boy Deluxe to be quite nice, especially when run above 9 volts...really come alive. I may try them again. Cheers!

  • do any of them have the jrc chip in them?? im looking at ts pedals and trying to make a decision

  • @EnveBeats The TS7 and, oddly enough, the Boss SD1 have the JRC4558 chip in them stock. None of the others do unless you go vintage. In this video, the Analogman has the RC4558 put into it via the mod, and I believe the Keeley does as well...although Keeley may have put in something different.

  • oh shit im gonna look into the ts7 then, didnt know that, thanks dude

  • i just got a ts9dx and im debating about modding it maybe just to 808 specs. the thing i like about a ts is just mainly for leads. i love the smooth strat neck pickups sounds, and for all the compression it gives in comparison to my timmy or king of tone

  • @marvelboy04 Cool! The Analogman or Keeley mod might work for that aspect. :-)

  • i wonder how many people worried about this actually play their guitar?

  • @drewby33 What's a guitar? ;-)

  • All sound nice

  • @zeymatis Cool!

  • I did my own restore-to-vintage-specs mod, including the visible-from-orbit LED with the pedal pressed. Thanks for an educational video!

  • @paddyoski Cool! And no worries!

  • Thanks! I've been looking for this type of review. Analogman gets my vote as I know how to mod my own true bypass switch (and change the led if I want).

  • @Druss1586 Ya, I like the Analogman, too.

  • Really informative, thanks Passenger95. Although I'm partial to the Original TS I think the Keeley sounds great!!

  • @kruzy99 Thanks! :-)

  • Blue LED makes the green shine :)

  • @hxcFluffy haha Nice.

  • how did you do that :( newbie here...

i really like the keely one ;D

  • @RadicalSituation The modding? You can get kits online or send them in to Analogman or Keeley and have them modded. :-)

  • to me they all sound the same in this video.

  • @rockard94 Ya, for practical purposes, sometimes they can get lost in the mix.

  • is there is a homogay anal crammer in your penile banana slammer?

  • I'll have to check out more of your channel, I'm digging your videos.

  • @787Bisurdaddy Thanks! :-)

  • What amp did you use?

    Thanks

  • @stul9045 This was a Holland EL84-based amp, I believe.

  • My vote is for the Keely. that one just has the best sound

  • @jonsteveg It did have a real nice seering tone. :-)

  • tonebone plexitube or keeley modded ts???? which should i get??

  • @ConorsGuitar Personally, I prefer the Keeley. But the Tonebone is cool, too.

  • Wow that Keeley really bumps the gain! Great video!

  • @fluff191 Thanks! And ya, that Keeley really does go. :-)

  • The stock one sounds the best...

  • @baytamusic Right on! Stoked you dig it.

  • Well I love this video, I commented a while back but im back for more ;O)

I had the TS9 mod plus (keeley) a couple years ago which i sold to put towards a new guitar. I just today ordered the keeley TS9 flex 4x2 today which has the mod plus and baked mod rolled into one.

Is that the baked mod pedal on the left?

  • @mattacuk Yep, that's the baked mod!

  • those harmonics that sound like a ring modulator or something... is that from the mic/ computer? or do the pedals make that?

  • @nepalnt21 I believe that's from the pedals. The guitar also has a really nice ring to it. I've been really pleased with the Prairiewood's. :-)

  • @Passenger95 and also from the AC30ish amp.... that sound right there is why i want an AC30....

  • good show

  • @bookorbible Thanks! :-)

  • Very nice. I've had an Analogman Maxon od9 for awhile and it was pretty tame. Just a touch of dirt, like most were back in the day, but I got another from someone else and it came with another chip, the JRC and it dirtied up quite a bit, have a good one, like the Keeley, too, Glen

  • @2253glen Right on! Ya, that JRC4558 chip is great! Cheers!

  • "WHAT AM I SAYING" hahah. My favorite part. Anyways, thanks for this. I was always wondering about the different ts9 mods. I really like how raunchy the Keeley mod seemed. How do you go about modding it? Did you do these on your own, or do you send them in somewhere?

  • @Blythe31 haha I'm such a spazz. And I bought this one used, and it already had the Keeley mod. He does a lot to it, so I just buy his. :-) Cheers!

  • I have an Analog Man modded tube screamer but I gotta say I liked the Kiwi best in your vid.

  • @ott5178 Ya, it had some pretty cool distortion going on. Cool pedal for sure!

  • TO MY EARS WITH RIGHT FREQUENCY ADJUSTMENTS YOU CAN MAKE THEM SOUND THE SAME...THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO .VERY USEFUL!

  • @VESANG No problem!

  • This is indeed a very good demo! He's playing the same thing on all tests!

  • @b44styreraug Thanks for the kind words! I do my best. :-)

  • I wish you would play some Bad company style riffs. I'd like to hear if it would be good for some crunchy rock tones.

  • @zbaby82 I'll try to next time. Thanks!

  • My MohoMods pedal actually sounds like it has more gain and bass than that Keeley. It's hard to tell since I have no idea what amp, guitar, or settings you're using, but I love my TS9 with my MesaBoogie now. One day I may install a switch and the other chip so I can switch between them, but I decided for now that the D chip sounded so much better, I doubt I'd ever use the P chip anyway. My TS9 was never hot enough for me before. I think mine is chunkier and hotter than all of those, actually.

  • @SloppyGoat Awesome! I'll have to check that mods kit out. And I think I mentioned it in the video, but I was using a Prairiewood into a Holland (EL84-based.)

  • I think the MohoMods Kit is your best bet. It comes with everything you need, plus not only comes with the JRC4558D chip, but also the RC4558P. These were both available in the TS808 and they do definitely have two different sounds. This kit came with the socket so you can change chips and decide which you like best. IIRC, I decided the D chip had a chunkier tone. I now love my TS9! I could not stand the reissue before, but now it sounds great with anything I plug it into.

  • @SloppyGoat Very cool! Thanks for the info!

  • keeley rocks

  • @sixvideos :-) Agreed!

  • Thanks for this, i can see no matter what i do to my TS9 i'm still not gonna like it that much. It just sounds like a wall in front of the guitars tone.

  • @wantabiscit Unfortunately, I feel the same way. None of these ever made it to my board. Although, I can see where they would be useful. :-)

  • Ugh...if it's a TS demo, I want to hear reasonably skilled blues playing, not bad U2 riffs.

  • @con5243 lol Well, sorry, but bad U2 riffs are all you're gonna get with me. But check around youtube...there's probably a ton of tubescreamer demo's with both blues riffs and more skilled playing than you're gonna get here. Cheers! :-)

  • @con5243 you douche bag, theres 100,000 videos with cliche blues licks, nothing wrong with a bit of edge!

  • From my point of view the intended use of these pedals is to play through an already cranked valve amp not through a clean amp, they are intended to hit the tubes harder in a valve amp. Thats why they are called 'tubescreamer'.

  • @petegiant Very interesting. Ya, I've heard that, and I've also heard that they were actually meant to emulate the tube sound through solid state amps, hence the name 'tubescreamer'. I've also heard that the name refers to being able to get 'screaming tube' sounds without actually cranking your tubes. So, I'm not sure what Ibanez's or Maxon's original intent was for these things. In my experience though, I've liked clean boosts more for boosting a cranked amp. To each his own, I suppose! Cheers!

  • @Passenger95

"To each his own, I suppose!"

    Indeed.

Have you tried playing them through an amp that is breaking up and has a least crunch already ? Cos personally from this i can see more use of the original.

Wikipedia "The most popular use of a tube screamer is to push a tube amp to make it overdrive more."

  • @petegiant My normal use for od pedals is setting my amp on the verge of breakup, and using od's to push the amp into its own breakup. I've tried the tubescreamers that way, with bone clean amps, and with dimed amps, and just personally...I like them the best with the amp set just on the verge of breakup.

It sounded decent to push an already really crunchy amp, but not better than just turning the amp up more. :-) Nothing beats real tube crunch, in my humble opinion! :-) Cheers, my friend!

  • hello: i am trying to mimick trey anastasio (of Phish) guitar tone... i know he used 2 tube screamers and has a silver modded ts9... if someone can tell me what he sets his knobs to I'd greatly appreciate it !!!!

  • @slowhand633 Sorry, I don't know. Maybe someone else can chime in??? Cheers!

  • The Keeley Mod sounds great but Its not really a tube screamer anymore. As long as you have the JRC-4558 Op Amp you'll get a classic sound.

  • @bigfish0886 That's true. I found that out real quick in this video. hehe

  • I personally like the AM a little better. From the video here, it seems a little bit warmer and a little less grainy. Am I correct?

  • @DemoColorScheme hehe I don't know about correct, but that's the one I like the best!! :-)

  • @Passenger95

Well, from what I've observed on this vid, it just seems less grainy. Was that the case in real life as well?

  • @DemoColorScheme Ya, it was definitely smoother. :-) You have really good ears!

  • Can anyone recommend a medium to medium/high gain overdrive similar to the Keeley Baked Mod but that isn't as "grainy" sounding? That's my one gripe with his Baked Mod...must be the Germanium chip or whatever he uses. Love it but that grainy characteristic really bothers me. I'm using Fender Princeton and Deluxe amps and I never ever turn the distortion level beyond 9:00 on the dial for that pedal but still have the problem. Thanks!

  • @dmart1000 For a high gain, but smoother overdrive, I'd try the Hermida Mosferatu, Lovepedal Eternity, Fulltone OCD, or for real smooth, the Skreddy Top Fuel or Pig Mine. :-)

  • @tiomakeke Ya, and the BYOC stuff is pretty decent comparatively. My favorite tubescreamer clone to date is the Mad Professor Little Green Wonder. Wow. Killer ts type pedal!!

  • to my ears the Keeley personally sounds leagues ahead

  • @mattacuk It's definitely hotter! I think for a distortion pedal, I really dig it. :-)

  • @Passenger95 I had the Keeley one a couple years back, I sold it to go towards my new guitar. I miss it so much im going to buy another ;P

  • @mattacuk haha Awesome. Ya, I sold this one too, and miss it sometimes!

  • @Passenger95 Keeley pedals all round !! :O)

  • @mattacuk haha Absolutely! :-)

  • i think the fulldrive 2 is a better pedal.

  • @joshuarugg I might have to agree with you there. :-)

  • Well one point to make here is that it's not really a fair comparison to put Keeley's BAKED mod into the mix against the A-Man Silver and a stock TS-9. The Baked mod is intended to have FAR more gain than Keeley's regular TS-9/808 mod. A fairer comparison would have been to use his standard mod instead of the Baked. That said, I've had them all...and I love the Keeley stuff hands down.

  • @dmart1000 That's a good point. I should've used a different one of his mods. But, still sounded cool! hehe

  • The True bypass mod is def worth it...I have the analogman TS-9 Silver mod with True bypass...I love it

  • @bsdickey1 Right on!!

  • i dont get why people mod thier tube screamers to sound like something else. if you want it to sound like something else, buy something else. haha. good demo btw i like the U2ish stuff. praise jesus!!

  • @joshuarugg the whole point of modding a tubescreamer is so that you can achive a sound that is no longer available brand new... the keeley mods are awesome because if someone wants the stevie ray vaughn sound, they would have to find an old ass pedal. i agree with you tho too!!! however, they are ALL tubescreamer sounds, just different eras of components give or take...

  • @coldandhomeless Very true. Well said. :-)

  • @joshuarugg I think it's to get them to sound like the earlier tubescreamers from the '70's that were built with better quality parts. But as for stuff like the Keeley, ya I'm not sure why Keeley didn't just build his own distortion pedal. But oh well, still sounds good I guess! hehe Thanks for the kind words on the U2ish stuff. haha That's all I know how to do! :-)

  • good vid, fun and informative. Thanks....

  • @ksmit Thanks! Cheers! :-)

  • I like the stock one best. Just sounds like a tubescreamer should.

  • @spakuloid Awesome. :-)

  • @spakuloid first time I actually listened to a comparison such as this, the modded ones sound more "digital", or artificial. Stock was fine.

  • Keeley for me. Most people don't realize how much more gain the Kee;ley has when they a/b them

  • @mejoetone That's a good point! I certainly didn't, until this video. haha

  • Nice comparison test. Listening through crappy PC speakers it seems that gain and fatness increases subtly from stock>analog man>keeley. I'm wondering how much of a difference from the stock TS9 you'd notice within a band. I just bought a TS9 to replace an SD-1 and it's definitely a smoother and more transparent tone.

  • @radioroidar Ya, I think it's moreso an increase of how well it cuts through the mix with a band. I actually notice that characteristic more in a band situation. :-)

  • @passenger95 thanks mate!
