That's not entirely true, Turkey is a Republic and yes it's a U.S. ally at the moment. With that said, Turkey also has size able militant Islamic groups and it's not that far fetched that there could be another "Islamic revolution" like the one in Iran 30 years ago. Iran was also a secular country once and an ally to the U.S. Look at them now Bubba, it's not impossible that a similar situation could arise in Turkey.

However, there's a big difference in killing someone who's shooting at you as opposed to raiding a terrorist camp and randomly shooting people who've already surrendered.
