  • Damn, this album is brilliant. 13 modern gems of rock and roll heaven. It's like Radiohead's In Rainbows; feels like a thunderous return-to-form, and every song is great (although Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief and Send Away the Tigers were still pretty good).

  • Most beautiful song ever, it makes me so sad listening to it, you can really tell what kind of place Richey was at when he wrote this. I hope where ever he is happy and he has heard Nicky singing this. <3

  • So unfair wih the Manics... I'm pretty sure there's nothing MSP can do to get respected by now. You just have to listen to realize and if you don't... well, then you don't.

  • Wake up happy

  • I wonder how ppl fail to get this song, i mean it's poetry plain and simple. I don't think that any othr band has ever meant so much to so many. I mean living where I do where everyone just listens to plastic pop it's reassuring to see tht there are ppl who care so much

  • I want to have this song played on my funeral

  • i don't care its lovely

  • If i ever kill myself, this is definitely going to be the last song I listen to.

  • 1 person hasn't... oh wait, these jokes aren't funny :(

  • Now both of you shut the fuck up and listen to the beautiful musex

  • nos da is welsh for "good night"

  • what is nos da??

  • @kitty10koki13kiwi13 good night in welsh

  • Terrible vocals, nice song though.

  • Beautiful.

  • @ abdou282: well said

  • Perfect ending to a perfect album.

  • 1 dislike out of almost 90...I think that speaks for itself. Beautifully done, it's raw and honest. I love it.

  • I like the sampled filter sweeps taken from "Cabaret Voltaire - Messages Recieved"

  • this is one of the best songs of all time. I kinda wonder if this was a goodbye or suicide note from Richey to everyone.

  • OMG I just realised...todays the day Richey went missing

  • Stop the Nicky Bashing please :P haha quality, but the song is just pure genius from Richey as always :')

  • what a song...rightfuly sung by Nicky in my opinion, and James is right there are some obviouse quotas in there :'(

  • As great as James is, Nicky's the only one who could sing this and make it work as well as it does.

  • This song is beautiful. Nicky Wire was so right to sing this, and the lyrics are amazing. So sad, but so, so beautiful.

  • This is lovely. Nicky's voice is right for it I think because he sounds more vulnerable.

Lyrically this reminds me somewhat of Asleep by The Smiths. I'm probably talking crap but it did bring it to mind.

  • nicky gave this soul - a real masterpiece

i really feel this one and Facing page left

  • @omarqure You're a fucking douche.

  • @Ben17635 Shit? How about endearing. I'm a massive Manics fan and no, Nicky Wire is better off behind his bass guitar, but James' voice would just not have worked on this track. And if you realised how close Nicky and Richey (y'know, the one that disappeared and wrote everything on this album) were, how much they meant to each other, you'd understand this song isn't shit. It's heartbreaking. They are one of the only good bands still making music. Listen to the rest of the album and shut up.

  • @Ben17635 ur pathetic, please just die. ur of no use 2 the human race

  • @happyman64issocool, you would say that because people who listen to the shit think like that, you are a fucking spaz who needs to get your ears tested and probs from the USA who dont no shit about anything

  • @Ben17635 i'm actually scottish you fucking used condom. And fucking learn to spell the word "know". People should stop letting retarded six year olds like you on youtube. Don't bother responding just go and wank to the kiddy porn you usually watch.

  • @happyman64issocool do you lick your mums tits when listening to this song, no sorry your probs to busy sucking your dads cock to get that little bit of protean, so you can grow up to be big and strong like all the other sheep fucking inbreed Scottish ginger fucks. you lanky fucktard. and dont bother responding just keep sucking your dads cock

  • @Ben17635

    You're retarded.

  • @mackvanlobster so is your nan

  • @Ben17635 seriously? I can't believe u fat english wankers. Btw u should kno ur own mum by now. Boy do her tits taste delicious. UMMMMMM ENGLISH fanny. Its the best innit? Well u wouldn't kno. Ur more into anally raping ur goofy public school friends aren't u? I live in brussels u fucktard. No sheep around. Ur obviously a confused lil radge. Since u like cock and ur a boy ur gay. Kapiche? u fucking pasty soapdodger cunt

  • @happyman64issocool

You are the lowest form of functioning life on this earth, and that fact is only proved more and more every time you throw another mindless insult of grammatical doom at anyone here. The funniest part is how you think it's really effecting any of us. Just listen to the nice music and shut up, please.

  • @mackvanlobster I know I'm pissing you off and for that I'm sorry. But let's have a look at your confused logic shall we? You're trying to make me shut up by insulting me. You say I'm the lowest form of functioning life on the planet, yet somehow, miraculously I'm using a computer. Then you take issue with textspeak calling it "grammatical doom". However you say "effecting" instead of the "affecting". Anyway last time I looked I wasn't trying to affect you or anyone apart from @Ben17635.

  • @happyman64issocool

You're also retarded. Like the douche bag you're fighting with. Over the internet.

  • @mackvanlobster heez a dick and ime bored. I don't think its that retarded. And if u suddenly start taking the moral high ground ur just getting involved 2. I was just trolling fer a bit, cuz he insulted me. simple as that

  • @Ben17635 literally u should just crawl in a hole and listen 2 taio cruz

  • @Ben17635 dude whether you like it or not, the manics STILL got voted as God-like genius's by NME and in my eyes will remain that way forever

  • what's the story about the album cover?

  • Reminds me of Hope of the States. And that isn't a bad thing.

  • Nicky singing on this track made it undeniably sincere. It was the right decision.

  • amazing

  • I cried when i heard this aswell, glad nicky sung it, it had to be him. My favourite on the album.

  • In the original prose for this, Richey Grace Fields who was a famous actress and singer.

  • Richey mentions 'Gracy Fields'

    I meant

  • Beautiful song. I'd love to see all the original lyrics for this one though. The final lyrics in this song are just bits and pieces of the lyrics Richey wrote. Understandable though...the song would have been half an hour long had they used all the lyrics.

  • I cried when I heard this. I saw a picture of Richey and I just fell apart.

  • @omarqure Lmao isn't emo to feel emotion. What about the Romantics?

Or Joy Division for that matter?

  • Comment removed

  • @BejnXander pathetic..........

  • @omarqure Says the attention seeker. Go listen to some plastic pop bands and kiss your own ass.

  • Very lovely.

  • i almost cried when i first heard this. beautiful song , beautiful lyrics. so right that nicky sung it. hope you're happy now richey , wherever you are xx

  • I'd love to hear somebody even try to sing this song better than Nicky Wire, so I can laugh at them when they fail.

  • A fitting song for Nick to sing... sounds ok to me.

  • like it but the underworld remix is so amazing

  • JBD told Nicky that he couldn't sing this song...which is why he didn't.

  • amazin beautiful song. nickys voice is perfict for it. :D

  • this is such an amazing song. Nickey's voice is perfect for it. He sounds like a cross between Iggy Pop & Nick Cave and there is nothing at all bad about that.

If you don't get goosebumps listening to this then you are void of emotion.

  • I get goosebumps during the last two repeated lines. Sends shivers down my spine every time I hear this song. (:

  • I really like this one, it is really a stunning song to complete an album! but i really miss the hidden track as well! Its simply the coolest song ivve EVER heard, and i can't find it here... really need to know the name of it! please, someone..?=D

  • Bag Lady

  • Bag Lady :)

    amazing song xD

  • richey...

  • I love this... I really, truly love this...

And Nicky's voice is PERFECT for the song, end of discussion!!! It's deep and emotional and, like I already said, so-so perfect.

RJE was/is a genius at writing lyrics... (not sure if I'm buying the whole "he's dead thing" because there's no real proof; maybe he just needed a fresh start; not one person in the world could blame him. Sure, he hurt a lot of people, but if he is still alive, then it must've been something he felt he needed to do.)

  • beautiful song and beautiful lyrics. so right that nicky sang it. any real manics fan should be able to see that.

  • it doesn't matter how bad nicky's vocals are , why can't people see that! the only thing that matters is that you can hear the emotion in his voice. beautiful song , beautiful lyrics.

  • it doesn't matter how bad nicky's voice is. the only thing that matters is that you can feel the emotion in his voice. beautiful song , beautiful lyrics.

  • I like Nicky's voice in this song, it seems like a Lou Reed's tune

  • great song and shows Richey at his lyrical best; amazing, loved it!!!

  • Well yea, Nickys voice isn't perfect, but so was Richeys life. So, in the end I find it pretty well matching. What an hommage to a beloved friend.

  • I think Nickys voice perfectly suits this song, I dont think it would have sounded as good if James had sung it.

  • I don't think Nicky sings technically well, but who cares? The world is full of technically-perfect boring music. This one's for the...well, you know...

  • I think nidexiaohouzi is talking shit. He/she is entitled to their opinion, but then so am I. JDB's voice is fantastic, but every now and then, a little piece of magic from Nicky is amazing. I think his line in 'Your Love Alone' is the best in the song and this song makes the album complete and is my favourite which I play over and over again. Anyone who saw them at Camden will know what I mean.

  • Thanks for your kind word.

  • I think it's better that Nicky is singing this song, James has a big voice - which is great if you are a singer, but not much if you want to create intimacy...

Except that, I love the lou reed-esque tone that Nickey's adding with his voice to the song.

  • who gives a toss about how good/bad nicky's voice is?!!!!! it fits perfectly on this album and is the perfect closing track. the lyrics are beautiful and sad at the same time and the song is sung by his best friend in the whole world. why can't anyone just see that for what it is!!

  • the song is sung by Nicky Wire, because James Dean Bradfield it failed the disappearance of Richey and could not sing that lyrics.

  • nidexiaohouzi - you're an idiot and obviously not a lifelong manics fan or you would see that william's last words is perfect and right that nicky sang it. doesn't matter that nicky can't sing , it's irrelevant in this case. it's all about the lyrics and the friendship between richey and nicky.

  • Do you need to be so offensive about this? I never said or did anything against you. True, i've only been a fan since 1995 but quite loyal, i think.

Thanks for the response but please try not to be so aggressive. The world doesn't need it. Take care!

  • When I heard this I thought it was JDB singing and I just thought 'God listen to what all that shouting did to his throat' haha

  • lol

  • I love Nicky's voice! Very good.

    He should sing more.

  • I'm sorry but Nicky Wire cannot sing. Woeful.

  • beautiful

  • i had to fight back the tears when i first heard this , beautiful! feels right that nicky is singing , as he was closer to richey than anyone.

  • Give james back the mic my god nicky stick to bass and lyrics m8.. Ya can hear the nervousness in his voice... Nice song though

  • first time i played this made me cryed my eyes so sad

  • AND then the lyric's to Bag Lady almost point to a conclusion, no? William's Last Word's kind of seem to be half part suicide note and then "I am not dead" part on Bag Lady is that Richey talking about himself? could well be! but then "wish me some luck as you wave goodbye to me " is that about Richey too and did he write it to give the impression he may have killed himself? it's almost like he has deliberately left a huge puzzle he want's the band member's and fan's to work out for themselves.

  • So who is disagreeing with me then?! no one know's at the end of the day do they? I am just saying what I think may have happened to him that's all. Two option's that's all you have going pretty much. And such an intelligent individual like him has done a perfect dissapearence.

  • RICHEY IS ALIVE! come on people , look at all the evidence so far.. withdrawing large sum's of money from his account, could of easily of got another passport under a false name, leaveing his car in a well known suicide spot that is just almost blindingly obvious that he hasn't commited suicide. He has obviously planned it all out , and probably living in somewhere like Cairo or Southern America. I don't think he will ever be found sadly though. And THEN you have clue's in his lyric's on here...

  • totally agree with you that richey's alive.

  • I think it sounds naive and genuine with this vocal track. Even Nicky could sing better than this if required. James letting rip on this would make it sound cheap and cheesy. Hey it's a fitting tribute from his best mate and is also very Lou Reed like towards the end. Good for them. Not bought a manics album since This is my truth.... May give this one a go.

  • I agree with the Lou Reed comparison. Reminds me of "Perfect Day".

  • i don't normally like it when nicky sings but i think his voice brings out a haunting side of this song which james couldn't have

  • Yes , but it has been sung by mr Jones for a reason. And you do not grasp that so it seem's. It is a touching tribute to their lost band member and is beautiful in it's own way. The question is will he ever be found?

  • Nicky's singin is even worse than mine, Bangkok novotel haha, "on a diet of gaviscon, look at me am fucking gone".

A good bassist/lyricist and semi frontman , but a shite singer

  • HAHA yes his singing is pretty bad, but make's up for it with great bass playing and writing decent lyric's. Soundgarden, i saw them year's ago, what a band! check out badmotorfinger no doubt you probably have done anyway! Who have played with one of the Cocteau Twin's then?! wow!

  • Comment removed

  • he's never said he's a good singer. it doesn't matter that he's not , particuarly on this track. it was right that he sang it. even james agreed with that. you don't half post some shit mate!!

  • I don't know whether the reason why nicky's voice is because he's just terrible or he's choking with emotion

  • I think its fitting that Nicky sang this as opposed to James. Its one of the saddest songs I have heard in ages, it would bring a tear to a stone. Since Nicky and Richey were such really good friends Nicky just had to sing this. I reckon he's choked with emotion. I seen them on Thursday in Dublin and I welled up listening to this. Its sounds to me like a suicide note.

  • why r u downcommenting me? did i say had a terrible voice?

  • I love the Manics, but this song...I really wish James had sung it, but oh well. Since getting the album I've been fast forwarding through the track to get Bag Lady, now THAT is a good song

  • Nicky also sings on some of the demos. He does a good job; reminds me of Lou Reed

  • Шикарная вещь!.

  • This was great last night! I couldn't help but laugh when after that whooshing noise at the beginning, someone next to me shouted 'it goes a little something like this!'. It does sound like the beginning of It's Like That by Run DMC!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! thats the best laugh ive had in ages!

  • When Nicky sung this at the Camden gig last night it was so sad and he looked like he was about to cry. I'm sure he wasn't but the emotion in his face was just representative of all the sadness surrounding the meaning of this song. His voice sounded much better live too (no offence to mr wire...) and he said of how his hair made him look like rula lenska. tehe.

  • he looked in pain too cause of his back... "sorry for my awful posture, i'm afraid i've turned into all those other c*** bass players"

  • This is musical perfection, it helps the artists let go of the bandmate/friend they once had.

A song should consist of emotion and factual events.

This is preformed with such personal sincerety that it can never be replaced or duplicated.

    Well done Manic Street Preachers.

  • Nicky's voice really is terrible, but strangely I'm glad he sang this. It seems oddly appropriate. The lyrics are beautiful, as is the music. Richey was the best lyricist ever, and Journal for Plague Lovers proves this beyond all doubt in my opinion.

  • I'm sorry but this song makes me want to weep. Richie's goodbye to life. A wonderful lyricist of a wonderful band. Dignity, intelligence, talent, and integrity personified in one song along with an obvious love for those closest to one's heart and a love of humanity. RJE,your fans will never forget you and will continue to be inspired by you. God Bless.

  • brilliant posts from 1234legend1234, drummerdickens and Team Golden Oats. MSP are my favourite band ever, truely unique, and richey was/is a genius. Autobiographical or not, most people are going to draw conclusions about this song and the Nicky, James and Sean have done him proud. Sweet Jesus, this is beautiful and a fitting tribute. MSP WILL ALWAYS MATTER.

  • even though nicky is not good at singing its still an amazing song !!

  • Sounds like Nick on vox. Am I right? If so he should stick to the bass. JDB could have done this better

  • In relation to supermarkets selling it with a blank sleeve, is anyone else gonna stick pictures of the album cover over them? And this song is nowhere near as excrutiating as I thought it would be. Wire actually managed OK!

  • So sad, i love the album, however for some reason knowing that Richie isnt there makes the album not as good as Holy Bible however i love this compared to stuff like Lifeblood and This is my truth tell me yours. The later albums just are not as good. Beautiful song!!!!!!!

  • Manics are the most underrated band ever. I don't know who I feel sorry for more; Manics themselves or the poor bastards who bypass their incredible back catalogue.

From the proud owner of every Manics album!

  • This is an unbelievable closer. JDB couldn't have written any more perfect music to accompany this song. Could have made it a haunting beast and although it still is, the haunting is outweighed by beauty.

  • really sad song to hear i really think its a goodbye cause hes says his friends and family

  • i think this sounds like door to the river

  • firstly album = class, this song just reminds me of small black flowers when everyone thought richey wrote it about his circumstances, id like to think though and possible will carry on thinkin that this is richeys goodbye, there seems to be a sence of contentment with these lyrics, if it is then goodbye richey, massive possitive influance to many people, me obviously included xxx

  • so imperfect that it is perfect.

i'm so excited about the album needless to say.

i saw the documentary last night and it brought a lump to my throat. seeing james do all the accoustic performances, and nicky and james just reading the lyrics out. amazing. <3

  • The documentary was last night? I thought it was tonight uh oh !! :( :(

  • Beautiful. This album deserves a number 1 position on the Album charts, if not world-wide success. Though knowing the general taste of the mainstream, Eminem and Green Day will probably end up at the top of the charts instead. As banality always seems to be more successful than quality.

  • As a teenager who should be buying green day and eminem, i have to say this is out of thier league. This deserves our money. :D

  • Yeah he's not the best singer, but I think its better like this that it would be with James singing it. I mean James is an amazing singer, but Nicky adds a strange sense of sincerity to this song. I got my copy of the album today, and love it. Though I thought it was out on monday, so don't know why it came today, but not complaining (:

  • that says it all

  • This song remains in some ways the same to another song called Over The Hills And Far Away.

  • what is a dog leash followed this band since day 1 ?

  • some people should just play bass

  • I'm definitely buying this album on Monday! By the way, a word of advice: all major supermarkets are only selling the album with a plain cover sleeve, so buy it at HMV or Virgin megastore. The say the cover is too graphic! How the fuck does that work?

  • But they still let R,n,B and Rap artists use imagery of them selfs standing with a dogleash around half naked women, the thing is that young teenagers will go out and buy their albums and think that to be sexist to woman is acceptable. they also hold guns in on their front covers. i saw these covers last week in asda.

  • I know. It just doesn't make sense. Does it, mate?

  • the dog leash was around them. that was the twist.

  • I think that they are putting a slip case over the CD to cover up the image.

    Complete joke

  • yeh i got it at a supermarket there's a sleeve over it doesn't retract from anything its all there underneath.

  • Lay off Nicky.

He is a better singer than all the talentless cunts out there today.

    Besides he fits this perfectly.

  • He's an average singer at best, but that doesn't matter if the song is good.

  • It's hard not to be slightly moved by this.

  • Hell I love this. I know it's not completely deliberate, but Nicky's vocals totally fit the song.

  • Thank you.

  • Bradfield couldn't sing this, he broke down everytime he sang or heard the music (can't blame him). he let Nickey sing it instead. my mate told me this so it might not be true. + i love nick drake i would reccomend him to anyone who likes the acoustic songs on this album.

  • This is Richies, Fruit Tree (a nick drake song for those who dont know).

  • I actually think he sounds a bit lou-reed ish....and i could agree with the lyrics if it weren't for the last stanza and the isn't it lovely bit

  • They're simple but deff not shallow! Think of all the twisted, depressing, angry lyrics Richey usually wrote, then in the middle of it is this beautifully simple little love letter to his friends :'(

  • maybe you are right. I think it wil take more of an effort to enjoy this album though.

  • It's not a letter to his friends :P If you get this weeks NME JDB and Nicky talk about what each song could mean, i've just forgot what this ones about though :(

  • Hmm well it does say "you're the best friends I ever have" :P
