Thank you for posting this video. I have been learning jazz for a year and whenever I get discouraged I watch this interview. Bill Evans was an amazing person.
There is a staggering amount of insight and cultural analysis in this interview. I've always wondered if this profound knowledge drove Evans to drugs and his long, slow suicide; or if it was a result of his addiction. Or was it a some combination of the two. There are endless dissertations that could be written on points Bill raises in this interview - with his brother no less. What a remarkable artifact.
He seems to be saying put something positive into the world and you will automatically strike a blow against the forces of darkness that tear everything down.
It's nice to know there are incredible players like Bill Evans that weren't doing this stuff as a young child. Very reassuring to those of us who's musical abilities weren't noticed or even existent until an older age.
A Master speaks The Truth. Hearing and understanding these words can give any aspiring musician, of any level, hope and validation for their efforts. Thank you, Bill Evans, and thank you for posting this.
@helmusico - not a full transcript, but for what it's worth::.....with regard to 'the problems of the world'; “...choose some field in which you operate at your best capacity and which will then serve as an influence to deter all these other things that you're worrying about. So I figure that if I take care of the music as best I can with my truest belief, then all these other things will be affected as I desire them to be affected as much as I can affect them ...”
Now, this is a funny thing: to be able to play a masterpiece, intelligently and musically, and STILL not to be able to be creative and understand music enough to be able to play a simple thing like "My Country 'Tis of Thee" without having the music in front of us...
see,to me,all this is retarded.i came from the opposite end of the spectrum.i started out in a musical household and picked up everything by ear.i was writing pretty expressive stuff as early as 17.now i have friends who want me to teach them how to play and im like dduurrrhhh...i wouldnt know where to start. i can b like,"here hit this note...now create!" i have no idea how to replicate what i do.
you are a true musician if you can just "do it." However- one day, you might enjoy learning about the nuts and bolts of music notation, theory, etc. it really can be fascinating...
i've gotten n2 it a bit.but it just doesnt do anything for me at this point.seems to distract me.maybe im just too young and still full of piss and vinegar!or crap, one or the other
Oh, I should have guessed your age by the way you write!! :-)
Music is deteriorating due to lack of desire to learn the grammar of music. I attribute the fact that all songs are constructed with the same melodies and chords to lack of expertise on the part of both the audience and the so-called artist. Used to be Country Music was the only "ignorant" music...
haha was that an insult?! anyway,i disagree,i have an apptitude for the melodic and the chords,i just dont name it all off precisely. i know what key im in,i just dont know the more technical terms for some of the things i do.i mean, the notes existed before humans put a name to them(not to say there arent any advantages to knowing sheet and notation)but i know 'time signatures' to a T. im better with knowing time than knowing the term for that weird progression i just did or something like that.
No - no, insult directed at you - you've already convinced me you're a natural talent! but for those who aren't - wouldn't hurt to try to learn how to find more interesting harmonies and melodies...
talking on the internet(typing)in my opinion should be quick and to the point with abbreviations.i guess the downside is that ppl tend to go ahead(prematurely)and think you're a teen or cant spell.i assure you, grammar was never my weak point in school.haha
Hey I really adore Bill Evans and that what he did, but on some of the videos he don't have his upper tooth. What happened? Is it because of drugs?

i like the way he does the harold washington thing and "creates" words to keep his thought going -- "immensty," "permanize."
utubuser10 1 year ago
@utubuser10 I love the comment except for the fact that "immensity" is definitely a word.
