@BigPhil1982, Big time prop's for making that statment, Big Phil. And you're 110% right, too. I'm sure Aidan O'Brien had to be getting frustrated constantly seeing STS's backside during the entire 2009 season, LOL. But like you said, O'Brien never backed off of challenging STS with the best he had. It was primarily facing Fame and Glory, Rip Van Winkle, and Mastercraftsman that STS made his name on. I guess you could probably throw Conduit into that mix. Since he beat him in the Eclipse and Arc.
A lot of people say the run that Rip Van Winkle made at STS was the closest he ever came to losing one of his G1 stakes. But I've always thought Mastercraftsman in this race came closer than Rip Van Winkle did at Sandown. When Rip came at him in the Eclipse, STS just hit an extra gear and immediately pulled away from him. In this race, Mastercraftsman was on the lead and made STS really work to catch him. I heard RacingUK's Graham Cunningham say that he actually called STS beaten in this race.
Frankel is quite possibly the best sprint-miler EVER: ALREADY rated 130 - that's 8lbs!! above where Canford Cliffs was at that stage of his career. Horses Fr's beaten have since won July Cup, Irish Guineas, Irish Derby & Nathaniel may yet boost that record in the KG, Leger or Arc. Frankel's blistering speed & high Cruising speed is what we've seen THUS FAR - the poker player showing his hand - but if he's held up & kept in training @ 4yr we may be watching a horse that'll be rated 140 one day!
@AvalonAvenger007 HITHERTO we've had few offspring of Danehill Mares X Galileo but the Prince (KA) has "Noble Mission" a FULL BROTHER with Royal Lodge (Sept 2011) & 2012 Derby Entries waiting at home. Thus far, Frankel's only needed to use speed to blow away 2-3yr olds but the real tests'll come v. older ops, going abroad or up in trip where his turbo will be a killer blow if delivered late in a race in which he's settled. I'm hoping they don't over-face him this yr & we see him again NEXT yr.
@TicinoParadise I hear you and respect that opinion - really, who knows? The Belmont was, to me, just extraordinary BUT now we have Frankel making ponies of top thoroughbreds, getting a Timeform rating above Sea the Stars and now I'm all at sea!
@smifffff747, Frankel's certainly in a league all his own among 3yr.old's. But there's no way you can say the 3yr.old's that Frankel has been beating up on are better 3yr.old's than the one's that STS faced in 2009. Besides Frankel, who among today's 3yr.old's are better horses than Fame and Glory, Mastercraftsman, Rip Van Winkle, and Delegator?
@GBeret83 Attempts to compare across years AND distances are bound to be subjective & troublesome & not particularly realistic. Certainly we CAN say horses STS beat are STILL winning group 1s. AND those beaten by Frankel have ALREADY won G1s @ 6, 8 and 12f . A PC prog (or a lot of spare time!) may be required to judge which generated more G1s in BEATEN horses & which was rated higher at which points in their careers ( Frankel is ALREADY 130!) but very different racing styles & diferent trips.
@AvalonAvenger007 STS was THE MIDDLE DISTANCE horse of a lifetime & almost certainly never showed his full potential - like a poker player forces Ops to fold & never shows his hand! His acceleration in the Derby & Arc were fab. His grit in the Jud Int and Irish Champ were admirable - AS WAS KINANE IN EVERY RACE: supreme skill in the saddle. It was a great shame he didn't stay in training - He might've won a KG, another Arc & abroad @ Breeders Cup &/or Dubai/Hong Kong, but the owners had plans...
@TicinoParadise I hear you and respect that opinion - really, who knows? The Belmont was, to me, just extraordinary BUT now we have Frankel making ponies of top thoroughbreds, getting a Timeform rating above Sea the Stars and now I'm all at sea!
LOL. It's hard to feel sorry for Ballydoyle but to have such a good crop of 3yo's and come up against a horse like that. Kinane was well taking the mickey with 2f to go, just ambling up past the pacemakers. O'Brien even took to ganging up on Sea the Stars but to no avail. Mind you I still don't think any horse gets near Secretariat, especially his run in the Belmont
@smifffff747 - I strongly believe Sea The Stars, Sea Bird II, and Nijinsky 2 would beat Big Red. ....And I have a huge amount of respect for Ms Chenery, and her Legendary Colt.
Quite a small Juddmonte International Stakes field compared to the field that lined up at York for the 2010 running. No Juddmonte representative. No Godolphin representative. Only Ballydoyle, and Aidan O'Brien's continuous obsession in 2009 to try and prove that one of his 3 star 3yr.old's from that season, Mastercraftsman, Rip Van Winkle, or Fame and Glory were up to the task of finally taking down Sea The Stars. An obsession that O'Brien was never able to fulfill. Close, but no cigar!!
i was there this day....unbelievable. i see some people forget that american horses take drugs to win races...not sea the stars or any other european horses for that matter. a TRUE champion this one.
I wish he had shipped to the Breeder's Cup to take on Zenyatta. I'm not going to say who I think would win because that's just one person's opinion, but it's hard to argue that it wouldn't be a close. He would be her greatest challenge and vice versa.
@Peachycanyon, I'm a huge Zenyatta fan. That said, if STS had shipped to Santa Anita to race in the 09' Breeders Cup Classic? Provided he had taken to the synthetic surface? And my guess is that he would have. He's just too good. I think he may have possibly been the one horse in the race that Zenyatta's late closing burst in the race may have not have been able to catch up with. But I do think she would've likely ran to within a length or less of STS. JMO.
Only a dumb ass american would make a comment like that. Newsflash imbecile, US breds are not the best, only in your little minds. You rarely travel outside your own shores to test yourselves..
It's a real shame that Mastercraftsman was retired, and didn't get another shot at the Juddmonte International Stakes in 2010. Because he certainly deserved another chance to win this race. Even if they didn't continue to race him in 10+furlong races. It would still be great to see Mastercraftsman competing against Goldikova, Paco Boy, Canford Cliffs, and Dick Turpin in the mile division as a 4yr.old. I still think he came closer to beating STS in this race than Rip did in the Coral-Eclipse. JMO
this was probably sea the stars weakest performance he realy had to work hard for this one, i dont think he was at his best this day and he still beat a very classy horse in mastercraftsman, when you see how far sea the stars beat mastercraftsman in the irish champion stakes after this race you realise this race flattered mastercrftsman
The reason I say that this race seemed more in doubt for STS than the Coral Eclipse is because in the Coral Eclipse, I never got the feeling that Rip Van Winkle was going to get by STS. But in this race, for just a moment, I did wonder if STS was going to get by Mastercraftsman.
I dont think i could tire watching this horse, he is so great, he deserved every win, i love how he accelerates past them in the last furlong nearly everytime... The other trainers (particularly Aiden O' Brien) threw every horse they had against him, but Sea the Stars outclassed them every time in every way, a true and worthy Champion!
Johnny Murtagh uses his whip too aggressively for my liking, and not just here. Surely a good jockey knows when his horse has nothing more to give, or that what he can give will no longer make a difference to the overall result?
Even though Sea The Stars is without a doubt in a class of his own, I really love Mastercraftsman and his effort in this race. I think he too was a brilliant colt. JMO.
Delegator in the 2000 Guineas, Rip Van Winkle in the Coral Eclipse, and Mastercraftsman in the Juddmonte International all took their best shot at Sea The Stars, but the bottom line was Sea The Stars just proved himself to be more of a champion.
I was really disappointed to hear that Mastercraftsman had been retired after his run in the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile. I think he just got a bad trip, boxed in on the rail, as much as anything. I think he's a colt with a world of potential and would have liked to see him come back and race as a 4yr.old.
first of all STS is retired and second you can't compare a 100m runner with an 400m runner and the third is we should hope that you Overdose can reach his class again after his injury .
Exactly.Sea the Stars have withdrawn even a crippled Overdose wins. Even me. Why withdrawn? Fear of Zeniatta. Rip.V.W. placed 11º in Breeders Cup. Sea the Stars if running is placed 10º. No chance against her and Rachel.
youre just wrong on so many levels (who is this aiden o brien) lol sts is the champ, mick never asked for more than 75% of his ability, he said that himself!!if zenyatta was in this race here, do u think she would win?of course she wouldnt, do u know why?because shes 1 dimentional, she can only be ridden one way, and thats out the back!a slow pace and she'd be nowhere, FACT!and if u think that was rvw true performance in thr bcc, well then u dont know very much about horse racing at all!
and if the yanks wanted to see sts and zen or rachael race, why didnt they come over to europe, FOR A CHANGE, and run on a real surface like grass for once!zen and rachael have only ever raced in america ffs, i would bet if they had to travel and werent allowed to use lasix theyd get beat by average g1 winners over here!PUH-LEASE!he had a tough season, g1 each month for 6 months NEVER BEEN DONE, he doesnt have to go to the breders to prove himself, hes the champ, u travel yo him:)
also worth noting the breeders cup is a new event , and it doesnt hold have the prestiege of the british classics like the derby or the arc in france, its a plactice competion just like the dubai world cup!even the great prize money cant get the best horses!and i dont understand your logic that sea the stars would be 10th?can u explain that one? oh and he beat twice over by 18 lenghts, how manny did zenyatta beat him by...........oh yeah 2 1/4 lol ffs..she wouldnt have a chance! NEXT!!
@GBeret83 Even with her allowance, Timeform have STS six lbs clear of her. I don't think it would even be very close. Zarkava would have a better chance, but maybe their progeny will prove better than them both. Would be very nice to see!
@GBADCD Zenyatta is a great mare but beating twice Over by two lengths(a horse STS beat over 15 lengths in the eclipse) is just shows how poor the American crop was last year. To sum up Zenyatta is great but STS is one of the best ever. She's not even in the same league.
@jaytee007 Honestly. The style of running is not for Zenyatta win with many lenghts or breaking records. it's to win. Thast'it.
