There's some kind of seal over one of the four torx screws. is that a warranty seal? should I just tear through it? I don't wanna tear anything important here..
Okay I did this yesterday, and it worked at first, but about an hour later my phone would have random freak outs. It called my friend and wouldn't let me hang up, and the screen just scrolls around all over the place when im not even touching it. Ive noticed it mostly happens when the keyboard is slid out or when its in landscape. Its frustrating as hell. Does anybody have an idea of what went wrong and how I can fix it??
@Livlaughlove2 Could be a few things. For the black screen after calls, this is caused by the proximity sensor being covered on the touch screen digitizer. If the screen randomly scrolls, this can be caused by the touch screen coming in contact with the LCD screen. What kind of adhesive was used to attach the screen?
@RepairsUniverse I actually didn't use any adhesive at all.. I just reused what was already there. We just heated it up and stuck it back on. Theres also parts of the screen that seem to be unresponsive all the time, even when the screen isn't flipping out. Is it possible that the new screen is just defective or something?
@Livlaughlove2 New adhesive would be suggested. I would also check the connection on from the touch screen to the motherboard, this can cause similar issues. Is possible it is defective, may be worth contacting the seller of the part directly for any other possible troubleshooting.
Very good instructions on taking apart the phone. Prior to taking apart my touch screen functioned properly. Just had a few bad cracks in the screen. Suprisingly enough I was able to power on the phone after putting it back together. For the most part the new touch screen works, just having trouble with scrolling on the touch screen and the phone key isn't responding to touch. Could this be something I did, or the touchscreen itself?
@krischeat Could be either, however we always suggest checking the connection of the flex cable first. If the connection seems correct I would contact the seller of the part directly for more diagnosing information.
I did this for my nephew last night after getting the screen. The only thing I didn't do was read the comments about the adhesive for the digitizer. I could not reuse it, so now I have to try to find it locally. For now the screen is a little loose, but better than a dangerous cracked screen. All kits should come with at least 2 small adhesive strips!!!! We did save about $90 so that was a big plus.
So....how exactly would I know if my flex cable is indeed damaged? Cause on first assembly, my phone wouldn't even power up. I tried again, perfect, but the touch screen is non-responsive. About to try again. Pray to anything it works for me PLEASE.
@amandaseffingchannel Normally just loose connection. They may go in place originally but when the housing and motherboard are added the connections can sometimes become loose. If it was damaged you would see an issue with the circuitry or a rip in the flex cable itself. Does not take much at all do rip these cables, as they are very fragile.
@oflanz Fresh adhesive is highly suggested if replacing the glass touch screen digitizer. If only replacing the LCD screen, adhesive can normally be reused without any issues.
Our preferred adhesive can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.
@CarlieBethx3 Yes, sadly many of the slide phones are long screen repairs. They are not too difficult, just many parts that need to be kept track of. All steps are shown in the video, simply reverse it to give assembly instructions.
my htc shift fell off on a rollercoaster ride and the screen is severely damaged but it still turns on and sounds but screen is to spider webbed to see anything at all. Would screen replacement fix this or could it be more?
@zombie9466 Its possible it could be more. Is there no way of telling if the LCD display is working properly? I cant imagine it would go through that and not damage the LCD screen; but always possible. I would suggest disassembling the device and checking the LCD screen. Check for bleeding, cracks or anything else on the black LCD screen.
Both replacement screens are available at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.
nice vid. I have a shift, and was in a car accident, the phone must have flown around in the car. Since then the screen doesn't respond correctly near the top. Is this something that would be caused by a damaged digitizer, or would it possibly be just a ribbon issue, or possibly something else?
I got stuck on the step after taking off the keyboard and removing the flex ribbon, I am unable to remove the sliding portion of the phone. I noticed in the video that there appears to be a portion removed on the right hand side between 3:45 and 3:48 of the video. How do you remove this section/do you have any tips to remove the sliding portion after taking the flex cable off? We messed with it for a good half hour before putting the phone back together.
@fochtinator Remove all the screws and be sure to remove the bottom and top tabs at 3:08. You then need to warm the adhesive to make removing the flex cable and slide portion easier. It should then pop off pretty easily, just be careful of that flex cable!
@RepairsUniverse I guess I'm still stuck... tried it again... We took out all the screws, warmed the glue and the flex cable came off but we can't get the part to slide off. In the video there's space on the right hand side... used to be black that then at 348 is more white (something was removed) and we can't figure out what/how. Any suggestions?
@fochtinator This is a small piece of housing that is simply clipped in. You can use a safe open pry tool to remove this. Pry under the lip and work your way to the clips, once a clip is released the rest should be easily removed. Some clips are a bit stubborn, but should pop off without too much hassle. Just take your time with it and you shouldn't have any issues.
My touch screen also doesn't work, I checked the upper right cable and its in place....i accidentally pushed the cable in with out opening the lock, could that have broken the flex cable?
Ok so I broke my touch screen on my phone, took it apart and put it back together with a new digitizer and the touch screen doesn't respond now. What ribbon cable should I check?
@jimmywilldie It may be best to have the issue diagnosed at a local repair shop as it is difficult from afar. It may be something simple that may be inexpensive to resolve.
My touch screen is off and on when I slide the keyboard, but works perfectly when in portrait. Should I just buy the tools to open up my shift. If so what tools will I need? The keyboard works, and if I press the back of the slid up portion of the phone sometimes the touch screen will work in landscape mode. Should I check connections, if so which ones?
@jimmywilldie Sounds like a loose connection. I would suggest checking this. It will be the flex cable found at around 4:30 in this video. The tools required for the Evo Shift is a small phillips screwdriver and a torx T5 screwdriver. These tools and replacement parts for the Evo Shift can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.
I recently had a friend drop ma fone on da back of it away from the screen...but 3-4 days after the touch screen wont work but everything does .its turns on and off and i can see everything i just cant touch it..do i need a new LCD screen or can i take off some screws and work from there?
@0924angel You will likely need to replace the touch screen digitizer. This is the outer glass that detects touch. Many times this cable is damaged or the connection is knocked loose. Check out RepairsUniverse (dot) com for replacement screens for the Evo Shift.
I dropped my evo shift and now the touch screen acts up opening commands when i don't touch it, and it wont let me touch anything on the top part of the screen there is no cracks or anything.
@Drunkenraptor1 Two ways to resolve this. First would be to check the touch screen's flex ribbon cable and connection. Be sure they are fully in place and not damaged. If they look fine, I would suggest replacing the touch screen digitizer. This will resolve the issue for sure (assuming there is no motherboard damage). Replacement screens for the Evo Shift can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.
My phone recently fell and hit the floor and now the light that comes from the screen doesnt work but the touchscreen parts still work like when i unlock the phone and press the volume i can hear the ringer sounds when i make the volume higher or the vibrate when i put it on the lowest. The touchscreen part still works but the light doesnt turn on.
@warrior108pak This is a LCD screen issue. My suggestion would be to check the LCD flex cable to make sure it was not jarred loose. If it looks good, I would suggest a LCD screen replacement. This will resolve the issue (assuming there is no motherboard damage). Replacement screens and parts for the Evo Shift can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.
@1unknownfactor It is likely, however a few other things can cause the same issue. Such as a loose connection, damage to the motherboard, etc. However in most cases where the LCD (blacklight) has been damaged or is not functioning, replacing the screen will resolve the issue. These can be found at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.
pertfectly fine. so whats wrong with it? he was gonna buy a new lcd screen cause he thought maybe they took it apart and didnt atach something properly back together but when he went to unscrew it all again he realized one of the screws were stripped. so now what? he wants to take it apart but the screws are just SO small and one is stripped? is it the lcd not working properly or what? sprint said they cant help him?! and that it had liquid damage when it doesnt because it was working fine!!
@ninny003 If it is running really slow it sounds more like a motherboard/software issue than an issue with the LCD hardware. I would check to make sure all connections are fully in place. To get around the stripped screw, try the following 2 methods: You will either need to use a screw extractor to remove the screw, or use a small drill bit to drill out the screw and remove. These are your two easiest options.
@RepairsUniverse well its not running slow anymore. now the touch part wont work what so ever. so he has to have it opened up like he would be typing on the keyboard and he can scroll threw his pages with his arrow keys and it goes at normal speed its just if he touched the screen to try and click something it just does nothing. like he isnt even touching it?! but when its opened he can search for his messaging and then still text normal fine and everything.
@ninny003 Sounds like a connection issue from the touch screen digitizer to the motherboard. I would be sure the connection is fully in place and is not damaged. Likely it is just a loose connection.
my boyfriend has this phone and we fixed the digitizer on it and it was working fine for like a month or two and then his phone got locked and he forgot his gmail so he took it to sprint and they told him to come back in an hour and they should have it unlocked. well they had to do a factory reset and he got his phone back and got to the car and was driving away when he finally turned it on. well it was SO slow and now the touch screen wont work. and sprint said they didnt do it when it worked
Awesome. I just finished replacing the digitizer on my phone. One thing to note, when I started my phone back up it turned on but was a black screen. Had to disassemble and readjust the flex cable to undo an extra kink. Restarted and it works like new!! Awesome.

I just did this replace the outer screen and now the touch screen will not work. It lights up and works but it will not let me pull down the unlock the screen bar or use anything on the main page. I reconstruct everything like 3 times. but still nothing... any help would be great.
@satanforaday Could be a few issues. The first thing I would make sure of is that the flex cable is FULLY connected. If it is, I would check for damage to the flex cable, such as small rips. If these don't help you resolve/realize the issue, I would contact the company who supplied the parts.

@KylerMobile Unsure the exact section you are referring to, but i would make sure all screws are removed, there are many on the Shift and can cause this issue. Otherwise, it is usually just getting good leverage to release the clips (without causing damage).
@KylerMobile@RepairsUniverse - The sliding section at 4:00. I had the same issue and then i realized that piece is secured by clips all the way around. Found using the pry tool made it simple to remove.
So i followed all instructions, put new digitizer on, and after power up the screen doesn't power up. The lights at the bottom work but LCD doesn't seem to be powering. I checked 2xs and 3 connections are firm
@RepairsUniverse I feel it vibrate and hear it boot with the sprint tones so I suspect that rules out the motherboard. I suppose a rip on the flex cable that attaches from the LCD to the motherboard (large clip) is possible. Only repair on that would be new LCD right?
@MrPennyboy21 If you take it slow and steady you should be able to without a problem. It is not the easiest phone to take apart, but following this video you should get to the slider quickly and start diagnosing the issue.
When putting the phone back together, what do you recommend using to put the flex cable back on the metal plate? I'm wanting to repair my phone and this is the only part I don't full understand. Thank you.
@FancyAnt You can add a small bit of adhesive to hold the cable there, you can usually use the old adhesive to keep it snug until it is fully assembled.
How about a video on how to put it back together? I ordered the wrong part and took it apart weeks ago and I am kinda screwed. Its very hard to watch this video to put it back together.
@kelvin93pimp It sticks using adhesive. We recommend using new adhesive strips. You can find these in the "Repair Tools" section @ RepairsUniverse (dot) com

How about a video on how to put it back together? I ordered the wrong part and took it apart weeks ago and I am kinda screwed. Its very hard to watch this video to put it back together.

@hoobash Take it slow and steady, reverse the disassemble directions and you should have no issues. Good luck!

How does the touch screen stick back on after replacing it???????
kelvin93pimp 9 months ago
@kelvin93pimp It sticks using adhesive. We recommend using new adhesive strips. You can find these in the "Repair Tools" section @ RepairsUniverse (dot) com

If u guys could make a video to put it back on would be awesome. I wanna make sure my phone works after I do this
jerrydeleon100 10 months ago
@jerrydeleon100 To put back together simply reverse this take apart. Its actually much quicker and easier to reassemble than to take apart.
