yeah i read up on it yesterday ,this hole was built as a means to get rid of the sewage and drain into the under ground river that already existed. The thing is that there are also caves so if you dig unknowingly on top of a cave's ceiling and then saturate it with sewage/rain then this will weaken it and with the erosion of the river it will cause a collapse . You can actually some of these caves from some of the city's bridges,the river actually looks in part like rapids.
