This was actually a strong generation of players. In 82 Ireland were in a group with France, Belgium (then a world class team and the Netherlands, and nearly qualifed. And qualifying for 8 places for a tournament against 30 or so other strong or decent teams was very hard.
Well said distant voices. I was there in landsdowne that day and there seems to be more Danish fans that day. Back in 1985 it was cool to like the Irish football team. But after 1990, we got all the glory hunters in. Sivebacks goal was class.
I love Ireland and the Irish people. Nothing better than enjoying a pint of Guinness in the company of friendly Irish people at a pub in Dublin.
Back then you did have a lot of good players, but for some reason failed to deliver. You did beat the U.S.S.R. 1-0 though and later qualified for the European Championship 3 years later.
It was harder to qualify back then-no San Marinos or Liechetenstein back then.Tough groups all round. We came so close to the 1982 world cup finals-I think the referee robbed us off a good goal in Belgium.
Thats right, actually Søren Lerby was noted a record in Guiness' for that performance: 2 soccer matches within 6 hours. I think that will never happen again.
And about the game; I'd really wished I had been in Dublin by that time.
The days before big Jack and the English Premeir League-when the GAA loving Irish public did not care about their soccer team.
This game was played on a Wednesday afternoon-15,000 there and half of them were Danish.
I was there as an Irish fan with my Dad and we were in awe at this Danish team and with their fans. The Danish fans all had thir faces painted and were so friendly.
They had such a great team then-Soren Lerby left the game at half time to catch a flight to a Bayern Munich game!
Might've been the days before the English Premier League but Ireland still had - Bonner (Celtic), Brady (Inter Milan), O'Leary (Arsenal), Lawrenson (Liverpool), McGrath (Man Utd), Stapleton (Man Utd), Hughton (Spurs) so should really have been doing better. Just one of those days against a superb team that day.

Der er mange fantastiske øjeblikke i denne kamp men det bedste må da næsten være Elkjærs snarrådige vending på den irske spiller 1:44 - orgastisk!

Fair dues to The Danes in this qualifier. They put us to the sword.
Cusiously though, in the '86 WC they got an even worse hammering than us by The Spanish.
The Danes were amazing to watch though. Trashing Uruguay 6-1 and The Greeks 7-1...
Lovely.
And knocking out EN-GER-LAND out of Euro '84.
RIP Sir Bobby.
