Very glad i found this, found you're review of Toro Y Moi's stuff and wondered if you had reviewed this. This is one of my favourite Albums off all time and although it does have it's low points (Illuminated), tracks like 'Holidays', 'Imagination', 'Sometimes', 'Moon Theory' 'Echoplex', 'Summersun' & 'I look to you' have cemented this bands place in my heart, each of the songs i mentioned does enough to distinguish itself from the next while remaining very 'MHish.' I LOVE Illumination.
I found out about this through wait for it PES 2011 lol gotta say they have more than slight likeness to a classic nu wave techno-electro band New Order which is no bad thing....
I found out about this trough wait for it PES 2011 lol gotta say they have more than slight likeness to a classic nu wave techno-electro band New Order which is no bad thing....
What other albums come even close to this, this is straight outta 1976-1982 and not just because of the disco element, also because of the synthpop/rock, new wave element to it. What I get from listening to Cut Copy, Klaxons, Empire Of The Sun, Shy Child, Midnight Juggernauts, Grafton Primary, Cicada, Fenech Soler, Bag Raiders, and so on. This band does what those bands do, but makes an album with nearly no filler. BTW I do think this is the best album of 2010, next year will be Cicada's LP
You can dance to parts of Future Islands' "In Evening Air," but in total, the best dance albums of the year have been Caribou's "Swim," LCD Soundsystem's "This Is Happening," "Flying Lotus's "Cosmogramma" and Matthew Dear's "Black City" (in that order).
I saw them live and they sound better! there's lots of guitar distortion and really all about the energy, they are really pretty good, I totally agree on the review of the album, but really, live they are totally awesome!
Been following these guys since their EP in '08. Glad to see they're moving in the right direction! This review deserves a follow up with Chromeo - Business Casual!
Definite disco sound there, which is not too bad, but I also hear a kinda 80's commercial pop sound, which kills it for me. That ultraviolet track, for example, would have almost fit on the soundtrack to a sub-John Hughes teen comedy in 1987.
In terms of dance-y electronic music so far this year, I'm digging "Touched" by Blondes, and very little else.
So I must have missed something...why the lawn scene at the beginning of your segments? Also, are you not allowed to play parts of the songs in the review anymore? I have been watching for months now w/o really questioning some of the format changes. I love the original TND opening with the turntable, Random Rules, descent to the basement. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Anthony for reviewing this album, I just discovered Miami Horror a few days ago and was hoping that you would do a review. I love how they mixed electro and disco...pretty good mix of beats. You're the best! Hope your having a good Labor day weekend :)
@TrevortIn I've actually not heard of that one yet. I really need to get me some Mayhem one of these months - still working on expanding my black metal collection.
@gamechampionx Give their last album a chance, it's called "Ordo Ad Chao", just be warned: you'll either be in awe or deeply disappointed. I myself, think it's the blackest black metal album I've ever heard. Search for their song "Anti". ;)
@TrevortIn I should definitely check that out. I've only ever bought one black metal album I didn't like so I'd most likely enjoy it, especially since it's from a classic band like Mayhem.
I looked up with shear and instinctual awe to find miami horror, gracious and fluid, raining down synthed notes from the heaven, i was cleansed, electronically.
Right now I'm listening to the track "illumination" and it's great. Just what I needed :) I don't usually search for this type of music but I guess I should be.
I don't much like the "big" sound of these guys, like Justice and Daft Punk, I can see it getting boring after just a bit, without much inventiveness in the beats or atmospheres. Don't mind hearing it a couple times, but certainly wouldn't buy it. Scuba's Triangulation & Actress' Splazsh are where it's at for me this year.
I've only heard a couple of the singles, but I wasn't impressed. I'm slightly bias here though. Sadly, after a stint of fascination with Sister Scissors a couple years ago, I'm pretty much over disco infused electronic. It isn't exciting to me anymore. Dance music is ever evolving, which is good. 10 years later though, I think we could use another "Since I Left You". Something to really standout and make other musicians of the genre say to themselves, "How the fuck do I top that?"
first?! lol but anyway i really appreciate these reviews mostly because they introduce me to a lot of new music. im probably not first after typing this
Looooooove the track that features Kimbra.
Also, when she drops her first album, Vows, you better review it cause it's gonna be great!
