Brent, I live at the West end of Interstate 90, close to Century Link and Safeco Fields! Wow, you're a travelling man! I first saw your videos looking at California (Sacramento) videos of yours.
Driven this a million times. From Seattle originally and live on the other side of Washington now. Driven over there from here many a time. I know this like almost the back of my hand. LOL
Brent, I hope you can make it to Seattle on a clear day. The city looks 10 times better with sunlight and all the glorious mountains exposed. The view of Seattle and its Olympic Mountain backdrop is spectacular at the hillcrest on I-90 west in Bellevue around the 150's exits just before 405 is spectacular!
@caphillsea77: I don't think I ever saw this comment. My bad. Yes, I LOVE Seattle when the sun is out (which is usually the case in July, August and September).
@HoltCalifornia: That's a totally legit question, my friend. I would assume that it's a natural island, but since I'm not from the area, I can't confirm that. Perhaps one of the geographers or Puget Sound subscribers can confirm this.
As everyone else has already said, Mercer is a natural island. The only man-made modification I'm aware of in the Seattle area is that a land bridge was built many years ago between Vashon and Maury islands, west of the city.
@HoltCalifornia Correction: It is the most populated island within a lake in the United States. It's population is 22,036 and it is one of Seattle's wealthiest suburbs.
@HoltCalifornia That is a natural island in the middle of Lake Washington. It's one of the more prestigious cities to live in, and it is its own city with a zip code separate from either Seattle or Bellevue. Its name is, appropriately enough, Mercer Island.
@aswchris: I agree, it's pretty unique, as far as American freeways go. You really can't beat the views either, during the last quarter of a mile, first of the two stadiums, and finally the downtown skyline of Seattle. On a side note, the HOV express lanes (there's 2 of them) are going to be taken out, with light-rail tracks utilizing the ROW. In return, like I-5, I-90 will also have both variable speed limits, and overhead signs indicating lane closures or blocked lanes (the variable...
@FreewayBrent interesting. I think HOV pretty much substitutes public transport. HOV-facilities and usage is non-existent in Europe, but we do have extensive PT.
@aswchris ...(speed limits are already in place, but the overhead warning signs are not installed yet). The breakdown shoulder lanes will also be converted to regular travel lanes, and HOV lanes will be squeezed within the existing ROW on the mainline lanes.
@Bbgunn325: Ha, I never knew that until now. I'll have to check that out, sometime (maybe someone has uploaded that scene onto YouTube). Thanks for watching. :-)
@Cyrus992: The original bridge (the eastbound Adjacent Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge) dates to 1940; it sank in a violent November 1990 wind storm (fortunately, it was closed for maintenance, so nobody was killed), so traffic was shifted onto the brand new Homer M. Hadley Memorial Bridge (where the express lanes were converted to eastbound lanes), while a new replacement bridge was constructed.

Same song as FreewayJim's "Dallas High Five" video, except this is shorter and has a vocal.

This might sound really really weird, but is Mercer Island a man-made island, or a regular island?

@HoltCalifornia Mercer Island is a natural island, and I believe it is the largest island in a freshwater lake in the United States.

This may be a weird question, but are you related to the Freeway group you guys have, FreewayJim, FreewayAndrew?

@HoltCalifornia: Yeah, you could say that. I'm actually friends on a personal basis, with FreewayJim.

I ALWAYS learn something from your videos, Brent. So I-90 is the longest Interstate. Would you happen to know which is the shortest of them?

Another great one, Brent. Love the video. I can hardly wait to go out there.

We drive this frequently. I have family in Beau Arts Village. It is a very beautiful area.

Great job as usual Brent!
This freeway is not very impressive as in massiveness, but it does have several interesting features along the way.

Very nice video. I love Seattle, I want to visit again, I visited once in 2008. I also just watched the Rams whomp on the Seahawks. AHA!

Nice. I like how the freeway ended into a surface arterial. I always like that. :-D
Great vid, Brent.

It's funny how I knew where you were from a video game. 4th Ave was a long straight in Gran Turismo.

@FreewayBrent look for Gran Turismo 3 - Ford GT40. It's got the whole seattle route from the game.

A very cool entrance for a city. Although the Hadley Memorial Bridge could have been designed a lot better imo. Kick ass video Brent!

@eluko79: I agree with ya, regarding the Hadley Memorial Bridge. Thanks for watching; figured you'd enjoy this one.

Very Short route, yet a lot to see.. :) Wait how did people get to Seattle from Bellevue before the 1989 bridge?
