  • What about gradius gaiden!?!?

  • Life force and salamander are in the same family because they're made by konami and their plots cross. Yea this game has a plot... Gradius three and gradius gaiden are my favorites, gradius nemesis, II (not 2), and 4 are memorable.

  • So what the hell is Life Force!?!?!? Is Life Force just some reboot?

  • へた!!!!w

  • What happened to Part 2 ?

  • My powerups, are speed x3 rockets, lazers, and options x3. Now u have a great ship right there

  • @GamerNinjaX I MISSED THE LIKE BUTTON ON MY OWN COMMENT. also I like the sheilds

  • I don't think I ever played this game without entering the Konami Code. Ever.

  • this is my fav game EVER, since i was like idk 2 !

  • gradius is healthy

  • FatTomHenry8 Gradius 5 was fucking amazing. Konami had Treasure make it so if you like Ikaruga this new bullet hell style is for you. It's long and about as difficult as breathing in space. That is the greatest PS2 game available.

  • what about Gradius V for the ps2? Is that a good game? I bought R-Type Final for the ps2 because i thought it was as good if not better than R-Type Delta what is one of the best sidescrollers. I was a bit disapointed when I played it. It is a good and a huge game but it`s kind of sterile and have not the class of it`s own predecessor on the psx.

  • technically ist this version an another real arcade version. back in the late eighties in japanese arcades there were machines that used nes-cartridges of the most popular arcade titles. and with your money you bought playing time. the name of the machine was play-choice.

  • Cool review. I hope you do one for Gradius V someday as well :)

  • Your Right And Wrong;Right:Cause All GAmes Are Awesome And Wrong:Cause All The Games You Play So extremely Cool Comes From Japan!!!!Thats Why Japanese Games Are Successful Like Gradius.Unlike American GAmes....look At EA's Strike Series....It Doesn't Exist Anymore Cause They Can't Make It ANymore....Unlike NAmco's Acecombat And SEGA's Afterburner,They Are So Successful That They Even HAve Alot of Seires

  • in germany it was called "nemesis". different name, same game.

i dont know how i figured out that you get points, when you fly with the back of the ship on the backside of the rocks hanging in the levels. maybe it was luck :)

awesome game and when my wii is delivered, i wanna play this game too. my good old nes is sadly broken ;(

  • @Schlurfilein

Not really. The first Gradius for a portable system, in this case Nintendo's Game Boy was Nemesis. The name NEMESIS was kept for the game's worldwide release. It combined elements from Gradius and Gradius 2 (the MSX versions), as well as some all-new features.

  • @PunkUpTheVolume ah ok thx :)

  • where's part 2? D;

  • Where's part 2?

  • I prefer Xevious

  • great game i played this game 18yrs ago in japan my fav but now i live in b.c canada looking where to buy this game gradius 1-5 pls any idea /email me

i love this game any info how i can lay my hands on konami gdradius

  • @MrJohn202030 You can download Gradius I-3 as well as the awesome Gradius ReBirth on the Wii Virtual Console and WiiWare, get the super great Gradius Collection for the PlayStation Portable, buy Gradius III and IV for the PlayStation 2 and get Gradius V for around 70 dollars on most any online store. Totally worth it!

  • great game i played this game 18yrs ago in japan my fav but now i live in b.c canada looking where to buy this game gradius 1-5 pls any idea /email me

  • It was the warp rattler not the vic viper the vic viper was lifeforce.

  • The best version of Gradius 1 is the Japanese PC Engine version (Turbo Grafx-16)

  • Gradius is quite good, and worthy of being mentioned.

I hope Otomedius Will be on your review list one day... and Gradius II: Gofer No Yabou for the NES or PC-E Super CD add-on.

If you liked Gradius , you will love Gradius II: Gofer NO Yabou

  • nice trivia info. can't seem to find part 2. can you please upload part 2? thanks!

  • I bought gradius from Toys R Us back in 1986. When I got home and popped it into my NES, I nearly squealed with glee as I realized it was actually a port of Konami's NEMESIS arcade game that I played at my local 7-11!! Best surprise ever!! I called over all my friends to play Gradius and they were AMAZED!! I still have my complete Gradius game pak as well as all my other beloved NES games and console!! Long live Gradius/Nemesis!!

  • Always a huge "problem" with Gradius. You die, you're fucked. Other than that, great series.

  • Am I blind or is there no part 2?

  • @thechristoph Classic game room videos are dissapearing from search bars lately. Just go to the actual channel and weed through the shitty new vgrid menue and hope you can find it.

  • i just picked this up at goodwill for $4.99

  • hey look, its the boss from the demo in blades of steel! lol

  • Man I was really young when I last played this..

  • This is The Gradius 1 for the NES for USA or FC Japan i think the VS. Arcade System and the Play Choose 10 Hardware for the MAME Arcade Game so Good Have Fun

  • I play this on MSX! Good old days!

  • one of my favorite games on the nes. the music is classic

  • what else happened in 1985 was sadly david lee roth left van halen

  • No part 2?

  • this game was annoying. if you die, you lose everything.

  • back in the day that made the games fun, that they actually challenged you, not like nowadays that they are more much for walks in the park

  • @scir91 just like almost all games of that era

  • where is the 2nd part

  • am i the only one who beat this game WITHOUT the konami code

  • @nibelung34343

I don't use it, and I made it to loop 4 without dying once..

  • Yes...yes you are.

  • no. I can do it too.

  • @nibelung34343 Nope, I also beat the game as well without the famous code.

  • they have a gradius collection on the psp first time ive ever played gradius and that shit a was badass son!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • gradius 1 2 and 5 are my favs..I wish they had put the Moai heads in 5 but it's still bloody excellent.

  • @EricDaNerd No Moai heads in Gradius V? Goddammit! *breaks Gradius V disc*

  • I had Nemesis on GB and Gradius on NES. I didn't know they were the same game.

  • got this for my wii :Palso got an gradius version in my konami classic collection gb

  • I had this game for the Commodore 64. The graphics were not as good as this but the music was definately better with a great baseline. Even had some speech after the game finished loading - "Nemesis, the final challenge". Highly addictive gameplay.

  • @CreweMike you right

  • Those 'Easter Island heads'. . . damn, the memories!

  • In my country it's called Nemesis.

    Not GRADIUS

  • i liked the music

  • I used to play Nemesis on a console called MSX.

I would like to see CGRHD Review it.

  • Oh God, I had an MSX; a Toshiba HX-10, I think it was called. Am I right in thinking that it was one of the first - if not *the* first - machines to have a CD-Rom drive and cartridges with dedicated soundchips? A great machine - underrated and undersupported, as I recall, at least here in the UK. And in the UK at least, 'Gradius' was indeed called 'Nemesis'. . .maybe because Gradius didn't really make sense to anyone at the time!

  • that was awesome i had Nemesis 2 back in the day. tough but awesome!

The MSX versions (which are called Nemesis) are actually different then any other releases and any Gradius fan should check them out

  • @lesssugar1 ????? why ?????

  • there are several PC remakes plus an online version (all are called Nemesis, which is confusing cos the Gameboy version of Gradius is called Nemesis aswell) I believe Gradius was changed to Nemesis in Europe. Konami had a horrible habit of totally renaming games for Europe for example Contra was called Probotector and had robots in it if im not mistaken. And to confuse us even more Super C was changed to Grayzor

  • Goddamn Mark good skills man.

  • This review is just jam packed with 80's references!

  • O.o Stage 1 Exactly as in Gradius ReBirth

  • yay classic game room you are my fav on youtube u r so awesome im probaly one of your biggest fan

i actually think u r abit cooler than avgn

just saying u kick so much ass its unbelievable!!!!! :)

  • @theoafsarian Well the difference is that CGR reviews both good and bad games, but the AVGN reviews shitty games :D

  • use the konami code !!!

  • Another great thing about 1985: I was born! lol

  • One of the greatest and hardest games ever!

I loved it and I stil love it!

It's too bad that not many sequels appeared ,it could of been a great game saga!

And for the person that said it's called Nemesis,Europe ruins the great franchises!

  • i still have that cartridge and the NES station that works ;D this game is hard and fun~

  • fun game!

  • This was an excellent game. I played it many times on the MSX system. Here in Europe it was called Nemesis.

  • gradius is the best for NES

  • there is also a gradius collection for psp with gradius, graidius gaiden and everything in between. its awesome,

  • i just got this game on my gameboy :D. is really fun,

  • thery r making 1 for the ps3

  • yeah, I'm gonna start collecting social security before that comes out

  • I've never actually played this, but it looks really good, as does Life force. I just bought a Honyu Explorer-1 (pirate NES advantage), so I might give this game a go.

  • parodious on the snes is my favourite version/spinoff

  • I could never play the PS2 gradius, that strange blue CD they were programed into would not play on my first gen ps2

  • A mate of mine had the same problem. Supposedly those blue discs are in CD format. I can't confirm that, but I've heard heresay.

  • i used to own the first gen and i played it and it worked fine

  • nemeisis is better

  • The Game Over makes me cry.

  • I loved NES shm'ups. Especially Gradius. I still can't get that damn tune out of my head!

  • Lifeforce is way better!

  • I was 19 in 1985. Ahhh whatta year!! This game was awesome, soundtrack cannot B beat: muzik and SFX!!!

  • Life Force was good too.

  • comes from a person with the name Kratos? If I'm not mistaken that's also a from a video game?

  • I'm not in the 80's I'm not even old enough to have been my mom was but not me

  • Kratos, go play some gay first person shit you fucking mongoloid.

  • The irony of your words.

  • everyone buy gradius collection on the psp it has gradius 1-4 and gradius gaiden

  • Is this the sequel or prequel to Life Force, or are the two games not related?

  • Life Force (known in its native Japan as Salamander) is a spinoff. It's considered part of the series, but it's not a numbered Gradius game.

  • you can use the konami code to make it a little easier.

  • As awesome as this game is, Gradius 2 on the Famicom was 10 times better. It's a shame it was never released in the US. It woulda sold millions.

P.S.; Mark, did you guys know that there are Gradius references in Yu-Gi-Oh?

P.P.S; Did any of you ever see the Salamander anime OAV?

  • Megadeth's first album also came out in 1985. ;)

  • The Easter Island head area is tough as nails.

  • I'm wanting to pick up an NES at my local Play N Trade but they don't have a lot of games there.

  • "Oh look he's gonna take out gradius."

    *Lifts top off*

    "OMGWTF?!?!"

  • ha 2:18 i remember killing that guy at the half time thing on blades of steel

  • cool

  • My all time favorite NES game...I still remember the tune from the first level :D

  • I shat myself when you lifted the top of the NES off!

  • I was born during the wrong decade T__T

  • I know how you feel man. Always felt I arrived into this world 10 years too late.

  • @d2girls Think positive: now you can buy all these games for cheap ;)

  • @d2girls This is the best decade so far because you have it all and the internet to know about it all, see it all, play it all for the price of your internet. The internet is what I would dream about back in the early '90s, thinking it was something that was impossible. I still think its impossible, yet here it is.

  • How did I miss this review? Good one Mark.

  • I can't even beat this with the Game Genie.

  • CGR what kind of controller were you using? Looks like it was the Advantage.

  • i just baught a used Gradius V for the PS2, i play it on a 60Gb PS3, and with the additional upscaling it looks awesome!

  • The difference from playing on a ps2 and a ps3 is very big. I play Gran Turismo 4 on the PS3 and I used the good old ps2 one time and the horizon became a blur.

  • you should try out gradius 3 for the SNES

  • Damn right! Awesome game right there.

Then again, the whole Gradius series pretty much is.

  • gradius 5 is way better.

  • ya but mark reviewed 5 already

  • I liked playing it in the arcades, but don't like the NES version. Don't know why - I cant recall if there are any differences - I think it just played a bit slower in the arcade.

  • Question. Which is better. R-Type or Gradius. I never played Gradius

  • Ahh, that's a toughy, Marduk.

In my opinion, neither are better than each other.

They are both superb shooters that made quite an impression on the gaming scene.

  • I personally prefer the Gradius series, though for every person like me, another with shout R-Type.

Regardless of which you prefer, they are both awesome games.

  • Gradius had to become popular with game console owners, R-Type with home computer owners.

  • i loved Gradius I and II on the NES. they were awesome! Gradius II had some amazing voice sampling for a NES game, and the remixed/revived BGM's from the 1st Gradius and Life Force (a.k.a. Salamander) were great!

  • does anyone watch Marc's gaming ability in his videos? for some reason I do from time to time just to make sure they're an actual gamer, and to see if they're any good...anyhow Marc's pretty damn good at games. He's pretty intelligent too :D <3 lol

  • Never played this series. What other gaming systems did this game come out on?

  • haha u sound like seth rogen.. or he sound like u??O_o

  • I used to have gradius on the first gameboy, but i lost it

  • You're my hero when you review SHMUPS!

The Gradius series is a favorite of mine. Now you should try the PC Engine (TG 16) version of this game. In fact, it would be really cool if you reviewed the PC Engine or arcade version for the second half.

  • My cousin showed me this game its a must for the NES

  • 1985 NES was released in North America

  • It existed, but wasn't really released yet unless you go by a very generous standard. It was barely test marketed in small numbers at a few stores in New York City in December 85. That's it. Then it was test marketed in more cities in 86. It wasn't released until deeper into 1986.

Likewise, the 7800 was test marketed in 1984 but it's not generally regarded as having been released until 86.

  • i gotta tell u, there's nothing like watching gradius in hd...

  • that means you suck too.

  • Your comment is...strange.

  • I got to keep my girlfriend away from your videos, she might fall in love with your voice. Fuck I did :S

  • hey if you like gradius you should play anything from the parodius series because it plays very muck like it but way more wacky

  • First onh!! ;-)

  • Love these types of games, make moree

  • I would say Gradius is the most popular, followed by R-Type

  • i like the music

  • The PC Engine version was by far the best with the little secret levels, it was even better than the arcade version.

  • You have no idea how much I love Gradius... Well, maybe you do.

    I LOVE IT SO MUCH.

  • Don't you think this game should be called Target Fun?

Another game, I like, that is Gradius like, is for the SNES and is called "Space Megaforce"... you don't hear much about it, but, it's actually a very good shoot'em up game, with some good music. Check it out sometime.

  • What about the Aleste series Mark?

  • I believe he reviewed MUSHA aleste in a multiple part series.

  • oh, i know he did. he just didnt mention it when he was naming great SHMUP series

  • I had Gradius on the Nintendo VS. Unisystem which is the same as the NES version. It was a lot of fun to be able to play it using an arcade joystick. I love Gradius & Life Force.

  • gradius is one of the best game franchises ever

    made

  • GAD DAMN IT

ITS GRADIUS - short a like ah (gr-ah-di-us) like in gravity

    >>>>NOT LONG A SOUND YOU HEAR IN GRAVEY

    (gr-ay-di-us)

  • 1980 Fuckin'5 kicks ass!!!! Man I played this game to death. So much that the intro music turned my stomach.

  • I had Graius III and IV for my PS2, I remember playing it a lot in 2001.

  • nice review ^_^

  • Like good god man, I told you a 1000 times to review it.

    Finally, it's here!

  • konami for ever :)

  • wheres the hd? :(

  • You need to wait like an hour before it comes up.

  • God I miss those days of going to the arcade with my dad and popping a few quarters in the mid 80's. Your vids are great for bringing back that sense of nostalgia. Thanks so much for that! I subscribed and I will keep watching!

  • I hear you man, I hear you...

  • pretty cool game.

  • Hard but still a lot of fun! Awesome review so far.

  • I used to always have trouble with the level at the end of the video. It took many times to get it down. But its been years since I have played the NES version of Gradius. Awesome video man.

  • cool video

  • one of the best games ever

  • NO ONE CARES

  • Obviously jealous.

  • I care, Bohrok, I care. . .
