@222browneyes They use a German pronunciation of the Latin. In this pronunciation, the 'c' in 'suscepit' is like the German z or c (that is, it sounds like an English 'ts'). If you listen to the first movement, you will also notice that 'Magnificat' is pronounced with a hard 'g' . . . not like the Italianate "mah-NYEE-fee-kaht".
@nojstradamus Its an oboe. Its playing the tonus peregrinus - the tune of a chorale melody connected with the message of the movement. Its terribly important part of the movement, so please don't insult it!!! In Bach's music instruments are voices and voices are instrumental parts - a wonderful tapestry of sound...
Thank YOU SO MUCH for this! those ladies are sublime ! It feels to me that they treasure every part of the lyrics and notes like a reliquary , their voices caress with silk and velvet the essence of the composition. Magnífico!
this must be so difficult... my choir is singing this right now and stagger breathing abounds.... no getting away with that when you're the only one singing y our part... o.O
Any young mezzo/alto should listen to Bernarda's transitions in and out of her chest voice - you can't hear it! Unity of tone from top to bottom - no break - amazing!
Good idea to perform this piece with solists - but this part is written for 3-voice-female-choir. I think both is ok. I love Harnoncourt and his direction.
@LifeforArt I believe this was actually meant to be a trio for three solo voices, not for three complete sections of a choir; the score I have of this work indicates this, at least. Obviously, however, both options would work, and that's why you may hear it done with a women's chorus (such as in the famous Robert Shaw & ASO recording) rather than three soloists.
Wonderful! Sung as it should be - three distinct voices but in perfect accord. That last phrase, with the underpinning of the alto holding that one note, is just beautiful. Well, after all, it IS Bach!
Finally someone posted a good version of this! All three voices are beautiful and blend perfectly without compromising the soloistic quality Bach wants for this movement. Love it!
Bernarda FInk is a mezzo singing in alto here. Her voice is so smooth and her technique impeccable. In Harnoncour't's last recording of Matthaus Passion, her "Erbarme dich" is the best I have ever heard.
I love this song. i am singing the soprano part this song in my choir for state contest which is may 1st. The three women did a perfect job in fact my friend and i listened to this video to pratice our parts.
Bernarda Fink, yes she is rather wonderful. You should hear her singing 'Priva son d'ogni conforto' from Handel's Giulio Cesare (conductor Rene Jacobs) where she sings the part of Cornelia.
I play trombone, and we have a trombone trio for our solo and ensemble festival this Saturday. I hope we can do this beautiful piece justice.

The look on Nikolaus Harnoncourt's face at the very end is quite terrifying, as though he's sensed that his vital thread will quickly be spun...

@MrBathiani I know. . . I have always lamented the brevity of the movements of the Magnificat. They are truly little jewels, to be cherished.

I loved this version of the movement, but there was a major error in pronunciation. Sung correctly, it sounds like "soo shay pit", NOT "soo say pit".
222browneyes 1 year ago
@222browneyes
both are correct. in italy they have "italianized" the latin, here they use the scholar latin.

Sorry, you are mistaken. They are not singing Italian. The pronounciation is spot on.
