I always get sucked into playing these new free-to-play MMO's, only to end up uninstalling them because well... they look great on a youtube video, but when you actually play them scaled 10 1920x1080 on your monitor, even at max settings, they look and play very mediocre.
Free to play now, but come on. How can you legitmately think this is a good review? You don't get past Lieutenant commander in this entire video (Low rank incase you didnt know). PvP is shoddy at lower levels, just like WoW or other games dominated by twinks. Play to the higher ranks, and then perhaps you can call this a "decent" review.
@0mni42 this game was made last year or so as the video was released in february but even still the game does look pretty and good compared to other mmo's look at world of Warcraft it isn't the best looking game either and this looks much better. It's bright colourful and has lots of lighting effects making or look nice
I try to load the game and it first says i nee to repatch it, when i do loading screen where it says CRYPTIC it says there fo a while then I get a messege that says "Fatal Error; unable to initelise on-demand patching and connect "patch surver, the connection was idle to too long"

STO has been improved greatly since this review. Well kinda, ground combat is still boring and the episodes are still boring and long. I think the only major improvements is that its going F2P Jan 17 2012.
I would just like to say that this review was done almost two years ago! The game has changed massively. Ground combat now is more involved with a first person shooter mode and they are going to be continuing the weekly episodes that are a big hit. I encourage you all to try the game for yourself when it goes free to play in January.
@Mac5071 i did, it stills seems like a shallow game of hit the space bar to me like it when it came out ... bugs are gone and balancing issues are sorted but the basic gameplay is still shallow which is the issue i had to start with
I must disagree with your view on the ground part, I think it's really well done, and enjoy it a lot. It has way more than just combat too. When I look for a game, yeah, I look for combat, but I make about 60% of my judgement based on the things not related to combat. Can the game make people feel like they aren't just playing a game, can I get ensued in it? Especially the mission creator... any other MMO's offer that? I really enjoy this game, but I guess to each his own.

Well, the best way to fix it would be to either take it down and COMPLETELY redesign the game - giving it its own, custom engine - or give it to a competent developer. Neither of those will happen. It's no surprise that STO is going F2P. Finally, it'll be worth the cost of subscription - nothing. And frankly, my dead grandmother could beat WoW. And, just what CAN you do in STO? I mean aside from mashing the 1 button? Certainly not CRAFTING.

@SpacePajama I've been playing PC games ever since one was made for the TRS80 (Pong), CDROM games since the very first one (Myst) was released, and MMOs (which STO is NOT due to its excessive instancing) since MMOs became a reality. STO would have been better as a single-player space exploration game, similar to Mass Effect. You should be able to walk around your ship, interact with members of your crew, and make contact with new civilizations. There could be multiplayer aspects where you can connect with your friends' ships and crew and explore the galaxy with them, but a full scale MMO doesn't really make sense with the Star Trek universe.
If you love Star Trek, don't be fooled into buying this - It is utter garbage.
There is no variety.Everyone is the Captain of their own Ship.Why couldn't they allow you to be a Ferengi that can only use small cargo ships for trading, rather than be a Captain going around doing the same garbage as everyone else, blasting ship after ship after ship.BORING!
Give me the choice to be a Trader, or something else other than a Science, Engineering or Tactial officer who do the same thing.
Seems like they could have just added some mission variety and the ability to have other players board your ships and play little mini games at the consoles, (or perhaps solve little puzzles) that help you win battles against other ships. There are a few things they could have done that I don't think would have been impossible to for them to do.
This is disappointing to say the least. While not maybe not "hardcore," I am an avid fan of Star Trek and have seen just about every episode of TNG, DS9, and most of Voyager, and I was sorely looking forward to a continuation of the storyline.

I really wish people would look at this game again. In 1 year, this game has gotten WAY better. Star Trek Online is evolving at a phenomenal pace. Better ground combat, smoother gameplay, better graphics, more content, and a passionate, hard-working development team. Plus, with the Foundry, you can create your own missions with dialogue, combat, story, etc. No other MMO has done something so massive like this before. This review is a year old. I think it's time for a new review! :D

Limited to no exploration. Starfleet's purpose is exploration, but they decided to severly limit exploration. Spock frowns on the lack of logic here.

STO would have been better as a single-player space exploration game, similar to Mass Effect. You should be able to walk around your ship, interact with members of your crew, and make contact with new civilizations. There could be multiplayer aspects where you can connect with your friends' ships and crew and explore the galaxy with them, but a full scale MMO doesn't really make sense with the Star Trek universe.

If you love Star Trek, don't be fooled into buying this - It is utter garbage.
There is no variety.Everyone is the Captain of their own Ship.Why couldn't they allow you to be a Ferengi that can only use small cargo ships for trading, rather than be a Captain going around doing the same garbage as everyone else, blasting ship after ship after ship.BORING!
Give me the choice to be a Trader, or something else other than a Science, Engineering or Tactial officer who do the same thing.

Seems like they could have just added some mission variety and the ability to have other players board your ships and play little mini games at the consoles, (or perhaps solve little puzzles) that help you win battles against other ships. There are a few things they could have done that I don't think would have been impossible to for them to do.

This is disappointing to say the least. While not maybe not "hardcore," I am an avid fan of Star Trek and have seen just about every episode of TNG, DS9, and most of Voyager, and I was sorely looking forward to a continuation of the storyline.

I really wish people would look at this game again. In 1 year, this game has gotten WAY better. Star Trek Online is evolving at a phenomenal pace. Better ground combat, smoother gameplay, better graphics, more content, and a passionate, hard-working development team. Plus, with the Foundry, you can create your own missions with dialogue, combat, story, etc. No other MMO has done something so massive like this before. This review is a year old. I think it's time for a new review! :D
