I understand why some people would be confused with multiple life sentences. People recieve multiple life sentences MAINLY in case that person somehow has a possibility of parol or some other kind of legal default, thus making it IMPOSSIBLE to dodge a life sentence. Its also a posibility that the courts get somewhat reactive when it comes to serious crimes of violence and feel that just one life sentence isn't right morally. Oboro's comment also explains it quite well. Hope this helped :)

The 11 "life terms" is mostly likely from each life he endangered. It is possible to get sentenced to "life in prison" and still get out, if you live long enough. Oh, and you can also be charged with assault for saying threats, you don't even have to touch anyone.

In america, the bad guys can appeal the sentences one at a time but it is unlikely he will succeeed in overturning all 11 of them thus ensuring he will not get out in his lifetime. That's all it is.
