Yeah. This summer, I got to go in the cab of that Mikado and blow the whistle. Makes me cry that somone would be sick enough to get rid of them. Even an oil burning steam engine is less harmfull to the enviorment than a deisel.
Me and a few others have started a petition to bring the steam engines back. We're writing letters to Andrew N. Todd, President and CEO of Xanterra. Hopefully enough public outcry may get these beasts back on the rails- it'll be tough, but at least worth a try. And you are very right, an oil fired steam locomotive is actually less pollutant than even the buses they run at the Canyon's rim.
@3254man But now, they brought that Mikado back. People have brought a lot of steam engines back. And they now also make miniature live steam engines. They're bringing it all back. :)
@SLSF1522 At least there's still a lot of steam engines today that are taken care of to last for a long time. And at least they also make miniature steam trains today too. That brings it all back.
The 4960's whistle is perfect!

The GCR is running steam again. They converted the engines to run on waste oil.

Nice, gotta love that whistle. I can't believe that they quite steam. They should be put in jail for such a thing.
