Yea, pretty lame smear job. Many things Joe says are true, but this video is way over the top. There are many, many more dumps in the U.S. than St. Louis, Joe's town included. Seek out the bad and you'll find it. Pick up the local "things to do" section of the newspaper and you'll have a great time.
Joe Felice, party animal or Bore from the Bay? That's the question. You really should try to have more fun when out on the town, Joe. Like, why come to St. Louis and drive through decay. Folks from here don't even do that. Go to a ball game, have a cold beer, eat a brat (litterally). Many magnificent neighborhoods here. The Hill, U-City, Central West End, Soulards, Washington Ave. Try some Stl-style barbecue or pizza, or Ted Drews, have some Fun. Meet some Girls. Saint Louis... Great Town!
Wrong again, jeo. I'm just a good citizens of this great town. My portrayal of Saint Louis was based on facts and data. Not a drive-by through the virtually uninhabbited, depressed section of town. What city in America doesn't have those same images? It was just a waste of film, gas and YouTube space. I have family all over Cali, including San Fran and Oaktown. And we just can't understand why you came all this way to point your camera @ decay when you have so much more in your hometown.
Been to your town, joe-San Francisco, and it can be a real toilet. For your next visit, I'll be your tour guide. After you spend the day at the riverfront, riding paddle boats and helicoptors and up in the Arch, take the train west to the World Famous St. Louis Zoo @ Forest Park. Catch an Off-Broadway play @ the Muny, visit the History or Art Museum and play a round of golf or have diner lakeside. For Nightlife there's the Landing, Wesport, Soulard, plenty of hot bands and cold beer... Day 1.
The next time you do a drive-by joe, take a minute and smell the roses. Here's a more accurate point of view of the Lou. Of the 100 wealthiest U.S. zip codes only 1 is in Missouri, 64124 -St. Louis; Of 10 wealthiest zips in Missouri, 8 are in the St. Louis area; Of Only 10 Fortune 500 companies in Missouri, 8 are in the St. Louis area; Barns Hospital in STL is in U.S. Top 10; St. Louis Children's Hospital is in U.S. top 10. Webster University in St. Louis is in top 12 in the Nation.
Being a Hobo-n-a-Honda doesn't make this guy a bad person. But for doing such an horrendously skewed, intentionally unfavorable and poor portrayal of such a great American city as St. Louis, no one should ever mistaken this Joe Felice character for a serious video journalist. I travel a lot, and can tell you that if this guy wants to do this sort of work he didn't have to drive all the way to St. Louis, he could have stayed back in San Francisco and gotten even better footage of urban decay.
The big wigs don't care they live in gated communities and their kids go to Private
schools they use the city as a big hamster cage to collect
money most people don't see the fear because they are programed to think everything is ok, In fact no one trusts anyone, people are shot ,robbed and raped walking the dog even washing the car really sounds bad don't itas long as they watch the happy go lucky news the world is fine. even dogs don't walk down certin streets day or night,it only gets worst
It also fails to mention forward thinking developments like the very successful MetroLink light rail system.
While white flight and racism played a role in the city's fall, it fails to mention the insurance companys that red-lined much of the city in the 60's, 70's scaring middle-class homeowners of all races.
St. Louis still has a long way to go, but don't belittle the positive developments of the last 20 years. A beautiful, historic place, don't spit on it as it tries to lilft itself up.
While much of what is presented here is true, it's a fairly skewed take on the current state of affairs in the St. Louis.
The video dwells on the many dilapidated neighborhoods but fails to show any of the vibrant neighborhoods that have endured the last 50 years, or have been revived.
The video fails to mention the remarkable comeback taking place downtown.
It fails to mentiion that while the city has suffered massive population loss, it is the center of a metro area of nearly 3 million.
St. Louis is awesome. The arch is still cool, we've got three stadiums in a rejuvinated downtown, plus Union Station, plus the Fox Theatre - all connected by light rail, and a world famous zoo. it's definitely got a lot of life to it.
You're just a nice guy, plain & simple. Blueberry Hill in the University City Loop is huge. Chuck Berry is a regular guest, as well as every other rock star who ever came through St. Louis. Anywhere in the Loop or the Landing on the Riverfront is good, as well as the Soulard district. There's a ton of good places to go.
St. Louis is not as dead as you would think. There are a lot of great things about St. Louis. I have lived here for 6 years. The only thing about St. Louis is that it is so black and white. People here need to be a bit more open minded.
I now live in the 2nd most expensive city in the US (San Francisco) and could drive through the Tenderloin neighborhood and show similar dilapidated buildings and houses. So that aspect of the video is not fair to St Louis. The guy is kind of pompous but he does a pretty good job of summing up why St Louis is the way it is now. I wish STL the best....just not the Cardinals.
Male Officers Lucey and Bernstein have been the noted organizers of the "Cuffs without Muffs" society, a gay sex club ran by police for police at 300 N. New Ballas Road, Creve Coeur, MO, 63141. The female officers (Officer Grace Jones) started a similar sex club within the department known as the "Butch & Bald Club". Internal Affairs investigations have been conducted into members of these underground police ran sex clubs and the production of obscene pornography that includes coprophilia.
Your Video though informative does not reflect my experience. St Louis is much more than the City itself. Given the opportunity Id settle there. My visits to St Louis have been enhanced by the people I have met. St Louis is essentially its people. It has a great history and future and as with all major cities will go through periods of change. St Louis has a beauty that is unequalled :) Did I say that I love the place? I didnt? Well I do. Its a place I'd much rather get to than leave.
What are you trying to accomplish by posting this video? St. Louis is a great place to live and a beautiful city.I've lived in St. Louis city my entire life.
This video contains the bias of one day in a city guided by a host who wanted to share his perspective with me. It's not false, but it's far from complete.
This video is so not right. You are showing the ghetto of saint louis. Even I, a resident would not walk the streets of where you showed. There are plenty of great neighborhoods in saint louis. We have a BEAUTIFUL city with plenty of jobs of available beside BUSCH. And since you are so educated on the city, you would know that all the "people with money" you take about are not moving BACK to the city. (Out of towners. They talk alot of junk but scared to get out the car)
to be fair, whenever people think of saint louis, that is what they think of. dangerous, defunkt and decrepid. i must say i dont like that that is all they see, but it's a fact of life. everyone outside of the missouri area thinks saint louis is trashy and dangerous. and thats because all the news that comes out of here is never good. but yes we do have a magnificent city. we have the best frozen custard and pizza in America and the best and safest park as well. I LOVE SAINT LOUIS!!
well u showed some places but u focused on the "ghetto" those were the outskirts of the city, all of stl isn't like that. we r doing better but every city is having it's hard ships. every since trains became the center of travel instead of boats, saint louis started to suffer and chicago took over. idk, i love it here, the city is awesome, ppl are great, toasted raviolli is the shit lol, and budweiser is still saint louis...i don't care if inbev bought it or not lol
Hey, I grew up in this town. It was really nice back then. When the owners of the stores and business died; their children did not want their companies. They sold them and moved to the county. Yes it was called white flight!! But I still love this town because it is magical with relationships, friends and families to last a life time!!! I usually go home twice a year! You should come and visit. You will enjoy it!!!
This is a partially accurate view of St.Louis. You neglected to show The Central West End, University City, and the Tower Grove area. All huge and historical parts of St.Louis that have been growing and refurbishing for the last 20 years. The video doesn't lie though. There are countless neighborhoods with huge once beautiful houses decaying from neglect. A total shame. The suburbs of St.Louis are without personality. Walgreen's Target and Wal-mart and that's it. The city is full of hidden jems.
I appreciate the art of what you are doing. Documenting the time we live in becomes a part of history as well as allowing others now to experience things and places we would not otherwise.
This is nothing anymore, STL is going through this whole Renaissance type thing. Everyone is moving back to the city. A. because its alot better(i mean who likes the county really??)B.Property values in pretty much 85% of the city have sky rocketed. 5 years ago tower grove area was dangerous, Today its a place where people want to move. The south side(i live there) has seen a huge jump in property vales. Our downtown is getting ridiculous. We are on a huge revitalization kick.
not really buddy, the county is not that nice, i mean sure the houses are big, but they are made of ply wood and quick crete. Its not really that nice in the county besides shitty houses, they all look the same. They county was a thing of the past. People only moved to suburbs because of civil rights, but now that we are all over that, people are realizing that city living makes much more sense in every aspect. fashion, comfort, accessibility, everything.
hmm thats funny, what have you only seen brick houses in postcards?? cause out in the county there is nothing ha sorry but its true. Yeah wow no walmarts lol that must be tough not destroying the country backbone in one fell swoop lol, just so you know i see thorough your trolling! haha, so yeah i know youre tryingo to start stuff lol but i still took your bait, just for the hell of it! lol I WIN! lol dont try with a come back!
personally, i love the county. i was born and raised in sunset hills and i wouldn't trade it for the city any day. the county is a lot nicer than any part of the city (well holly hills is nice lol) but each place has their pros and cons. shootings happen in the county and the city, just more frequent in the city. saint louis is saint louis...wether u live in saint louis city or saint louis county. we live here, we love it, and we will always be stl.
i hear what youre saying about the county being nicer, but you could have said the same thing about the city 60 years ago. Thanks to things like white flight the city suffered. Like the guy said, 60 years ago, having a nice big yard became fashionable. Now the whole suburbs thing is starting to wear off. The city just makes more sense to live in. Everything is right down the street. Holly hills is right by me, but there are way more paces nicer than that in the city.
ok I live in St. Louis and it looks like you were just driving around the north side. You did not show the good parts. My neighborhood Dogtown is a excellent working class area of the city. About 90% white.
You're right, most of the footage is from the north side. My 1 or 2 days in a city are going to be heavily influenced by what my host wants to show me. If you find another portrayal of St. Louis that reflects the city as you see it, let me know.
St. Louis has the big city vibe with the quaint atmosphere. As a resident, there really are some gems here, if you know where to look and don't need to be segregated. I can't say I'd want to live anywhere else to be honest.
Cleveland has had much the same problem, white flight to the suburbs and exurbs, and the central city, once home to 1.2 million, is now down to about 350,000, with minorities and immigrants also going to the suburbs and exurbs... and just a tiny trickle of the rather wealthy moving back downtown to co$tly lofts, and super-rehabbed old townhomes.
It's true. Most white people moved out of the city proper, and kept moving further and further west, where they built up these little towns, like St. Peters, with their strip malls and fast food. But for those who don't need to be segregated, you can buy a good, affordable house in the city.
St. Louis still has many cultural treasures, like Blueberry Hill and Ted Drews, that don't exist anywhere else, and one of the top-rated art museums in the country.
thanks for the video joe very nice reporting i love it man. hummm tosted ravoili never tried it. but i bet it's good. 'cant wait for the next video in nebraska keep in coming man . i love these videos.
I love your videos, but it would be nice if you would put links to the other youtubers that you mention in them. For example, with this video it would be cool if you put a link to itsbrent in the sidebar.
Saint Louis, that's my town. I can't wait to go back next Monday. I wish that you would have been able to experience the old spirit of Saint Louis. Unfortunately, most of the culture that revolves around the city is just sports now. With recent gang violence getting out of hand, I really don't see an improvement for the city within the next 5 years.
St. Louis is my hometown and I can say that it does have a long road ahead of it. But I would like to add one thing. St. Louis is an independent city, that is, it's a separate entity from the county that surrounds it. That means with white flight, the tax dollars left as well.
While the city proper doesn't have many residents, the combined metro area brings the total pop. to 2.8 million making it the 18th largest metro are in the states.
Glad to get comments from locals. The disparity between the city and the surrounding county is a big part of all this that I didn't get into. The city seceded from the county in the 1800's so they wouldn't have to prop them up economically. Then the tables turned and the county had all the money while the city suffered.
WOW!! Thank you so much for this video really taught me a lot and opened my eyes to things I don't always take the time to think about! As a single mom of 7 I sometimes lose sight in my busy life of other things out there! I appreciate that you made this! It was done very well!
I was born and raised in Old North St Louis and lived up and down North 14th street near St Louis Ave.That 14th street mall, I know it well when it was streaming with people and busineses. It was a great place to be raised in the 50's early 60's. In 71 I graduated from Central High. In 73 I started work at Bud Brewery in 73 thanks to my father inlaw and transfered to the new Bud Brewery Fairfield CA. in 76. Retired from there in 2004. Went to my old neighborhood in July. It in a sad state.
Good video Joe. I'm in st. louis now for the holiday where my family lives. The soulard has some great revival, and I hope there's more investment in historic districts. I think there will be. There's lots of wind in Nebraska. There are few gas stations in rural NE, so keep filled, have a good spare and make sure you have warm clothes!
Joe, once again very well spoken and very informative. I grew up in STL and was part of the white flight in the early 70's. I get a sick feeling in my stomach everytime I drive into the city. The city has a long way to go. I would have taken you to the birth places of William Burroughs, Betty Grable,Red Fox, chuck Berry,Harry Caray,T.S. Eliot, and last but not least Ike and Tina Turner. The toasted Ravs looked real good. Stay safe on your voyage!
I think I would like St Louis. It's history seems to parallel that of my own city. Even the brewery! Although ours remains independent. I didn't know Interbrew bought Budweiser? They own everything now!
I live in Belleville Il, about 30 minutes away from STL
its so sad how deteriorated that city is getting,
did you travel into east st louis? it gets REAL bad there
but at least you saw the greenhouse, forrest park is spectacular, and the green lawn in front of the art museum is maybe the most beautiful peace of landscaping ive ever seen in real life, while most of it may be degraded, STL has some bright points
did you get to see the awesome old water towers that dot the city north to south along Grand? They look like roman or greek columns but are really water towers.
The Grand Ave Tower is white and is on Grand and 20th st. The other tower a few blocks away is call Bissel tower on Bissel and Blair st. Grand Ave, is the northern edge of my old neighborhood. 50's 60's early 70's. I once lived on Linton and 20th too.
The main problem I've found with historic cities, is that the history contains the downfall. An industrial city brought down by the future of industry.
Sounds like St. Louis is the Detroit of the 50's... i never realized that St. Louis had deteriorated as shown... what used to be the gateway of the west has become a forgotten city. we don't need gateways when we have airports right? lol thanks for sharing the knowledge, luckily St. Louis has really done alot of advertising to try to bring tourism back in.

personally, i love the county. i was born and raised in sunset hills and i wouldn't trade it for the city any day. the county is a lot nicer than any part of the city (well holly hills is nice lol) but each place has their pros and cons. shootings happen in the county and the city, just more frequent in the city. saint louis is saint louis...wether u live in saint louis city or saint louis county. we live here, we love it, and we will always be stl.
kat0344 3 years ago
i hear what youre saying about the county being nicer, but you could have said the same thing about the city 60 years ago.

About 90% white.
joshbeller 3 years ago 2
You're right, most of the footage is from the north side. My 1 or 2 days in a city are going to be heavily influenced by what my host wants to show me. If you find another portrayal of St. Louis that reflects the city as you see it, let me know.

St. Louis has the big city vibe with the quaint atmosphere. As a resident, there really are some gems here, if you know where to look and don't need to be segregated. I can't say I'd want to live anywhere else to be honest.
KyoxXxlove 3 years ago
Cleveland has had much the same problem, white flight to the suburbs and exurbs, and the central city, once home to 1.2 million, is now down to about 350,000, with minorities and immigrants also going to the suburbs and exurbs... and just a tiny trickle of the rather wealthy moving back downtown to co$tly lofts, and super-rehabbed old townhomes.
voyeurdug 3 years ago
Yeah I live in Canton. The whole rustbelt is suffering. I don't see it getting any better for a long time either.
josephhopkins1 3 years ago

Hey Joey, thanks for sharing.
Unfortunately shareholders are more important then employees. This is very clear in these difficult economic times. We hear it every day in the news.

I love your videos, but it would be nice if you would put links to the other youtubers that you mention in them. For example, with this video it would be cool if you put a link to itsbrent in the sidebar.

Yes! You are going to Dan Brown's!
I love listening and watching your videos... and I also love doing the same over at the pogobat channel (Dan's) :)

Enjoy Nebraska; I grew up there.

St. Louis is my hometown and I can say that it does have a long road ahead of it. But I would like to add one thing. St. Louis is an independent city, that is, it's a separate entity from the county that surrounds it. That means with white flight, the tax dollars left as well.
While the city proper doesn't have many residents, the combined metro area brings the total pop. to 2.8 million making it the 18th largest metro are in the states.
abishopobispo 3 years ago

ArthurTyler 3 years ago
This roadtrip of yours is one of your greatest ideas.
It very interesting to see your point of view of every place you visit and to hear a little history.
And if you ever want to visit Central America, especifically Guatemala, I would be glad to host you.
zpooky 3 years ago
Oh, gosh, Joe.
I live in St. Louis (in a suburb area outside the city). I visit downtown often, and it's really not as bad your video makes it out to be.
Did you visit the sprawling Union Station downtown, or any areas closer to the Arch? How about the rows of ethnic restaurants on Clayton?
Only the rundown areas, and every city has their neighborhoods and areas that seem dilapidated and ghetto, seem to be filmed!
I feel like the real cultural, metropolitan St. Louis was left out of this video.
NemoNotEmo 3 years ago
Thanks for the comment, Nemo! Do you want to record or recommend a video that captures your St. Louis? I'll tell people to watch it.

They own everything now!
jillenium00 3 years ago
InBev bought A-B, as they call it in St. Louis. There's a great local brewery there called Schlafly's. I loved their coffee stout.
JoeFelice 3 years ago
A good stout is delicious.. I tried an oatmeal and a chocolate stout the other day

I did not even know you were stopping by!
The Hill is one of my fav dining spots

The Grand Ave Tower is white and is on Grand and 20th st. The other tower a few blocks away is call Bissel tower on Bissel and Blair st. Grand Ave, is the northern edge of my old neighborhood. 50's 60's early 70's. I once lived on Linton and 20th too.

St Louis...one of the historic cities...
The main problem I've found with historic cities, is that the history contains the downfall. An industrial city brought down by the future of industry.
