@igccaribe I think it's interesting in looking at Judy's personality. She was not a consistent women. She had marriages that fluctuated, her weight fluctuated and her looks fluctuated. But one thing that remained consistent was her talent: her voice. So to see her up and coming daughter practically outshine her, and to see Judy get a little ticked off at that, to me is very interesting. All in all though, Judy and Liza had a great relationship.
Is it true that Judy was jealous of Liza? There was a book written about this and it stated that the jealousy was obvious during their performances at the Palladium?? Don't want to believe that.
@WildWildWest30000 I don't think it was an angry jealousy. Judy obviously was not in her prime here. Her voice isn't as good as it was, she doesn't look well and she seems off. It was Judy who wanted to have Liza share the bill with her at the Palladium. I think it was that when Liza sung and dance like here: watch?v=uUV6vLGdaQE, Judy saw that her daughter had real talent and I think she felt like she had to step her game up. But they had a very strong, loving relationship.
I finally got tickets to see you Liza.I am so looking forward to seeing you!!! I know you put on one hell of a show! I can't believe I am going to see the legendary LIZA MINNELLI I can't wait! Welcome back to America Liza I have followed your tour and it is back in the U.S.A.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ya! Love Barb...
@Giharl21 yeah I mean they match the height, size, look and their personalities suit. Sally Field would do a pretty good job as an old Judy garland. :) Anne Hathaway would make an awesome young Liza Minelli.
This was a momentous event but Ms. Garland did not age well......I mean....at all! Was she ill towards the end? She was such a very beautiful girl back in the 30's & 40's.
@WildWildWest30000 Having seen her play Amanda Wingfield, I don't think Sally Field is right for Judy Garland. She's two decades older than Judy was when she died and, so far as I know, she can't sing.
@WildWildWest30000 That actually sounds like a great idea. I always thought Anne Hathaway should play Liza. But I never thought of Sally Field as Judy Garland. When you stop and think about it, it seems like it would be amazing.
lo veo lo veo y lo se guire viendo y me seguira gustando entre mas lo veo mas me gusta ,,,,,no lo puedo creer que mujeres en el escenario a de ver sido todo un show y un super gusto escucharlas vivas felicidades a las dos .........................
blueskies54321 do your research about Judy and Liza and Lorna and Joe.I did I was surprised.I don't like what I read but I researched it and its true Liza turned away from her Mom when she needed her most.I think Liza did not know what was left to do for her.Judy in her prime and she had a lot of prime the very best.Still Loving you Judy Barb...
Hmm..What problems did Judy have that she did not create herself? Well to answer that question I would say..Try Hollywood telling her she was a fatso and giving her a false body image.
It is really sad to have seen Liza loose her voice the way she did. I saw her live many times and marveled at her talent singing, acting and dancing. The fact that she married her "own" Michael Jackson, David Gest, that did not help. I think her teeth are getting in way of her tongue; there's like a shhoooo sound when she now sings. But she used to be great.
The most wonderful thing about Judy is that her two daughters speak so affectionately about their mother (you can tell they love her dearly) - which is an amazing feat for someone like Judy. In other words, with all the problems Judy had, it looks like she never took it out on her own children. What a beautiful person she was.
@blueskies54321 yes yes I really agree- with all due respect ever at her lowest, MISS JUDY was pure entertainer-what a great actress/singer/artist she was---hope I ge to heaven to Meet Ms Judy!!!
@grtbow Liza is on tour! You can go to her website and see the dates and times. She cancelled a few due to illness but is back. She also has a special coming on in December (the 11th or 12th I think) on TCM about her parents. :)
@Odette321 From Judy's earliest childhood on stage, the spotlight rarely off her, she HAD to center on the image she projected. And once the film studios hired and "wired" her (8 days a week on uppers to stay awake, lively and productive; then downers to crash land in dreamless, unrefreshing, unrecreative sleeps), and mercilessly criticized her appearance / tore her ego to shreds and made her lose her natural feminine youthful plumpness, amazing she survived at all.
@Odette321 Er, if you were made to be a "star" from childhood, went to school at Metro with Ava Gardner, Lana Turner & Liz Taylor, 3 of the greatest beauties of all time, were constantly told you were ugly & plain in your formative years, had to wear inserts in your nostrils to make them shapelier, were fed amphetamines to keep you up & barbiturates to make you sleep so that you could make 9 movies in just over a year, all whilst you were a child, how exactly do you think you would wind up?

while a metal head at heart but a fan of all music ,i have seen most of the great rock, blues, jazz acts and then some of the last 35 yrs or so. I had the privilege of seeing Liza at the Irvine Meadows amphitheater with Sinatra and Rickles 17-18 yrs. back or so and honestly was there for those two.Well Liza frickin blew me away. @confusedandalone14 Maybe not,the BeeGees have a older sister,(Leslie) not many people realise that or have ever seen her and she seems to be quit ok with that.'-)
@confusedandalone14 no I think it must've been easier in a way. Kind of like being Prince Harry? William has all the responsibility and so much pressure with being the a King one day, just like Liza has all that pressure to be like her Mother.
@confusedandalone14 Quite the contrary, Lorna Luft had a succesful career of her own. I think Lorna herself would scoff at your comment. You should read "me and my Shadows: A family Memoire"!
when judy started singing off stage, I started crying and I didn't stop throughout the performance. I wish she was still around, and I wish she had been happier when she was here. Thank god she had Liza, one part of her life that she enjoyed!
There is one of those glorious moments in show bizz. Talent of Judy and Liza were UNIQUE and I doubt that will be replaced by anyone else. As long I know, Judy forbidden Liza to sing her songs in any show after she died and get fame from her superstar mother. Liza did respect this vow and until now she does not need that to be recognize as the showoman she is, About gayety of her fans, that is absolutely irrelevant here. Please have a brain to discuss essential topics.
They are just wonderful. I am as straight as they come and they are amazing. Not beautiful, not sexy (Liza in Caberet manages to be alluring without being sexy), just great vocal talent and great charisma.
@lebarosky The fact is Judy WAS sexy. However, from when she was cast in TWOZ, her sexuality was controlled by the studios. This was extended to her TV work. She was type-cast as 'The Girl Next Door' who never got the Boy. Or, she was portrayed as either the daughter or a maternal figure. Her sexiness borders on the threatening for many people, because it wasn't obvious like Monroe or Jane Russel; it was subtle, crept up on you. Close to the edge for some in a Freudian way..
so i'm thinkin liza was the first with the long sleeve shirt and long skirt... so Babs is possibly stealing this from her? idk just thinking out loud...ish lol
This wouldn't post on the other video. Judy Garland's voice sounds incredibly similar to Liza's voice today. on some recordings, their voices are eerily similar. It's really an amazing gift these two women have(had). Judy Garland is truly an icon. I've always found Judy Garland's voice to have this haunting quality to it, but it is incredible. It's a shame she died so young, but what's amazing is that her legacy has lasted all this time and will continue to do so for future generations.

@DancerSam01 These two ladies just oozed talent from every pore in their bodies. The were entertainers par exellence. Sadly it is unlikely that we will ever see their likes again.
Talent is talent, and these two are legends and icons--never to be forgotten. I am so tired of the gay thing--people seem so obsessed with it today. I enjoy both Judy and Liza for what they are--wonderfully talented people who will always live on.
I am going to an evening with Jusy garland this sat.. her preforming on screen along side the des moines symthany!!! front and center.. should be amazing!!!!!!!
Aww, tears are coming to my eyes. My own mother died of breast cancer two weeks ago, and I frequently had to leave her bedside to drive to school to rehearse for Hello Dolly. The night before she was taken to hospice, I sang "Hello, mama" like Liza did and it made her smile. =)
Judy was very genrous to all her guests and especially to her Children. Some have said Judy was jealous of her daughter Liza. Not true Judy wasn't catty and always talked with great proud of Liza . Check Judy on the old tv show "whats my line" and with Barbara walters interview. Judy also made sure she woudl never be like her own mother who was jealous of Judy" because she had absolutely no talent." Judy said that to Barbara Walters in a 1967 interview on the TODAY Show. :-)
Seeing a clip of Garland and Minelli 2gether got me thinking...this is around the time "Gypsy" was made in2 a film, and I think Judy and Liza would have made the perfect Mama Rose and Louise respectively... Wouldn' that have been something! Can you imagine Judy's version of Rose's Turn? Two legends, one on her way out, the other just beginning, sharing the screen. I think they would have made the movie a masterpiece and Judy would have definately taken home her long overdue Oscar!
@ miller338. Interesting your comments, but it's natural a bit of rivalry between mum & daughter especially if in same career.

Capricaquarius89 2 years ago 5
That really would have been something if they were to have done that musical together.
