Replacing a processor in a laptop rarely works out. If you are replacing a damaged one with a factory default it would make sense but trying to increase your laptops performance by adding a more powerful processor will cause problems if not measured properly. Different processors put out different amounts of heat. Additionally there are driver issues as well as motherboard compatibility to worry about. You can increase your laptops performance by raising the Front Bus Speed in your bios settings
Loved this! I just really hope its as easy as you say it is, I'm planning on doing this to my Toshiba satellite and I suck at computer hardware stuff. Any chance you have a similar vid for changing the processor?

@SchecterZV depends on a number of factors, version of Windows in particular. 32 bit is limited to 3 or 4 gigs, depending on mobo, but 64 bit can have a ton of ram. Also depends on how many slots are available for new ram cards. Also depends on how much you're willing to spend, since one 4gb card is more expensive than four 1gb cards. lots of tutorials out there on selecting and installing ram (and other stuff), but don't rely on youtube videos for anything more than installation.
Lot of people get overly worried about breaking their computer when upgrading/repairing components, but they're pretty resilient. when handling sensitive electronics, you should ground yourself and avoid touching gold or silver filaments, but you can manhandle the motherboard pretty good before you break it. geek squad charged my co-worker $300 for ram install, when it takes 5 min and the ram itself is super cheap (Extra brand is like $20 per gig).
@ThePistolero909 Not so much "faster", more a case of "more room to breathe". It'll seem faster, but it's really just able to do more at once. Think of RAM as a desk. Adding more is like getting a bigger desk. It doesn't necessarily make you work faster, but it allows you to work on more things at once, which has the same result, if that makes sense. Before upgrading though, check to see how much your board/laptop can accept, and if you want more than 4GB you need a 64bit version of Windows.
hi, I have a Toshiba M100 satellite laptop and currently running with a 756 MB RAM [512 + 256] (DDR2, 200 pin, PC2-5300). But would like to upgrade in one slot a 2GB Kingston RAM. Please can you advice where to insert the RAM as i couldnt see the location of RAM? Any guide and useful information will be really useful for me.
What if I already have both slots filled. Can I safely remove one card and replace it with the upgraded memory, or will this cause issues. Will I loose anything?
@Docextreme1 Yay I did it! Now my Toshiba Satellite is a lot faster! Btw u shuld expand on how to get the ram out coz it was kinda hard to figure out you had to push outward then let it pop up! I'm glad I didn't break anything lol. But otherwise very great and informative video :)
Okay so I have a Toshiba at 4GB RAM. I have tried to find a higher RAM but have been unsuccessful. I would like to change my processor to increase my laptop's speed but I don't know how to change a processor and if I can upgrade it at all. My processor is a Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4200 @ 2.00GHz 2.00GHz. Laptop model Toshiba Satellite M505-S4940. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
@AverageGamerz Most laptops have the GPU and CPU soldered to the socket, so you can't remove them. It's pretty damn hard to find replacement parts anyway even if you can remove them, and you can never be sure they'll even be supported by the motherboard chipset, so I personally wouldn't bother unless you have some cash to spare and it's a machine you can do without if you mess it up lol. You'd get a bigger performance boost by getting an SSD anyway, or check the Seagate Momentus Hybrid drives.
Hey, my dad and i have satellite computers. his is about 3 or 4 years older than mine, they are both satelittes and are very compatible and have a lot of the same stuff. his mother reccently messed up and he just got a new laptop instead. would removing the ram from his old one and adding it to my existing ram make my computer faster?
I have a Toshiba Satellite with 3 GB of RAM that came with it. However, it has gotten pretty slow lately. It is slow to open the internet explorer, watching stream shows and download materials.
I can upgrade the RAM to 4 GB maximum, but is it really the RAM that is causing it to slow down? Is it possible that its internal hard drive is failing?
@htao06 Hello my friend I would have to ask you how old in the laptop? depending on how old it is there could be a number of reasons for it to slow down. When I read your post and seen Internet explorer, I said to my self that's one of the reasons IE is one of the worst browsers you could use in my option just because it;s all cluttered with everything you don't need...
@Docextreme1 Thank you for the fast reply back. I believe it was purchased in 2009. Its warranty expired in January of 2010 when I called Toshiba tech support. This is a Toshiba L305.
It currently has a 2 GB DDR2 PC2-6400 and another 1 GB RAM (3 GB altogether)
I have been downloading some episodes of various shows recently. I have also watched some NBA live playoffs and shows online. Other than that, I have played some flash games for awhile. It has gotten slowed after all of these.
@htao06 Hello increasing the Ram should help out a lot I am assuming your running Vista correct?
Sometimes having programs on your machine your not using can also slow things down. It's hard sometime to pin point the problem when there are some many out there....
@Docextreme1 Thank you very much for the advice. Yes, it comes with Window Vista. I do try to clean my computer by erase some of the stuffs that are building up in the hard drive. It has only gotten slower recently I did all of those activities mentioned earlier.
I will try to get a different web browser and upgrade my RAM. Do you think upgrade my internal hard drive can also help?
@htao06 You should try going to your computer, then right click your main hard disk drive and go to properties. From there, do a disk cleanup. When another window comes up prompting you to delete certain files, go to the top and you should see a tab called "more options." Click that and you will notice a shadow copies section. Select the clean up button, and in the confirmation box, confirm the delete. That should delete the system restore points that are mostly unneeded. Faster laptop now :D
@htao06 Upgrading your internal hard will not increase the speed of your machine it will just give you more room to store more files. Focus on the Ram and processor if your looking to increase the speed of your PC

Instead of getting laptop technician to see what kind of RAM you have, just go to the "Crucial memory" website and you download a scanner which shows you what type of RAM your PC/Laptop can use.
so when I buy I stick, is there a limit on how much RAM my machine will take, ie do I look for 2GB or can I go higher. My machine was bought in Canada new in 2007
@barrieanddot I am assuming your running Vista correct? if so you already have 2GB, on your machine.... If you want to make sure how much your laptop can hold bring it with you when you go to buy the Ram and they will tell you the limit for that machine.....Maybe they will tell you that you can add another 2GB and that's should just fine. Remember there are only two slots, So lets say you have two sticks of 1GB each and they tell you that you can add 1GB more you would replace 1GB with 2GB......
Brilliant. I am fed up of waiting for a 'friend' to get me a new stick. I am a typist/wp operator, not a technical wiz, so find this video is going to help me. Now, for a technical question. I have checked on my 'performance and maintenance' It says my system is 1.86GHz/.99GB RAM. What do I need to buy to update my speed. Your help will be GREATLY appreciated.
@barrieanddot Well depending on how old your machine is if you increased your Ram it would greatly increase the performance of your machine. It very easy to do as you see in this video
Unfortunately, the CPU is generally integrated into the motherboard, so to upgrade you either need to buy a new laptop, or send it in to a computer repair shop and have them swap out the motherboard for one with a better CPU.
@ZZZjoel43ZZ Hello my friend I guess that would depend on how old the laptop is. I am sure if you do a search you can find correct CPU for your laptop...
Why did u only take out one of the (Ram's) in this video? Is there a reason why u didn't take out the other one and replace it? I purchase 2 one GB memory (Ram) and intended to take out both and replace both. Is this the right thing to do?
.oh and im having problem with my battery life before it could stay up to 5 hrs now its only up to 5 mins..why is it so? is it broken or just old.? for other laptops are toy but for me it means a lot to me...please help me...
@ramirkhan I recommend to everyone if your using your laptop at home and you really don't need the battery in your laptop remove it and just plug it directly into the wall outlet. I never put my battery in my laptop unless I need to go out some were
hello i got the same laptop as yours, its running 512 in ram but some of my applications are running my pc slow specially in multitasking..a friend told me i should upgarde my ram to 2 gigs or more ..but what confuses me is the ram classification does it matter if tis ddr ddr2 as long as it fits my computer? please reply..
@ramirkhan Hello it does matter if the Ram is DDR or DDR2 make sure your placing the correct Ram according to the specs. Your machine may only be able to hold a certain amount of ram so your going to have to find out how much.
But is it quick and easy?

gtman2500 8 months ago
so if you upgrade your RAM your computer will be faster?
ThePistolero909 8 months ago

Any guide and useful information will be really useful for me.
antojaj 8 months ago
What if I already have both slots filled. Can I safely remove one card and replace it with the upgraded memory, or will this cause issues. Will I loose anything?
reynoldsbp 8 months ago
@reynoldsbp As long as you have room to increase your Ram and your using the correct stick of Ram I don't see any problem

Docextreme1 9 months ago

Thanks.

Hey is it possible to upgrade both the processor and video card of the laptop in the vid'? I have the same and it runs real slow.
AverageGamerz 9 months ago
@AverageGamerz IF your laptop is slow I would check the Ram first before I do anything else most of the time it's a shortage with the ram...
Docextreme1 9 months ago
@AverageGamerz Most laptops have the GPU and CPU soldered to the socket, so you can't remove them. It's pretty damn hard to find replacement parts anyway even if you can remove them, and you can never be sure they'll even be supported by the motherboard chipset, so I personally wouldn't bother unless you have some cash to spare and it's a machine you can do without if you mess it up lol. You'd get a bigger performance boost by getting an SSD anyway, or check the Seagate Momentus Hybrid drives.

Hey, my dad and i have satellite computers. his is about 3 or 4 years older than mine, they are both satelittes and are very compatible and have a lot of the same stuff. his mother reccently messed up and he just got a new laptop instead. would removing the ram from his old one and adding it to my existing ram make my computer faster?
ryanchampagne1 9 months ago
@ryanchampagne1 You would have to make sure the Ram from the old laptop is the same as the new Laptop
if all is the same yes you can increase the speed for the new one.....by adding more Ram
Docextreme1 9 months ago
Hi!
Thank you very much for the valuable tutorial!
Is it possible that its internal hard drive is failing?
htao06 9 months ago
@htao06 Hello my friend I would have to ask you how old in the laptop? depending on how old it is there could be a number of reasons for it to slow down. When I read your post and seen Internet explorer, I said to my self that's one of the reasons IE is one of the worst browsers you could use in my option just because it;s all cluttered with everything you don't need...
Docextreme1 9 months ago
@Docextreme1 Thank you for the fast reply back. I believe it was purchased in 2009. Its warranty expired in January of 2010 when I called Toshiba tech support. This is a Toshiba L305.
It currently has a 2 GB DDR2 PC2-6400 and another 1 GB RAM (3 GB altogether)
I have been downloading some episodes of various shows recently. I have also watched some NBA live playoffs and shows online. Other than that, I have played some flash games for awhile. It has gotten slowed after all of these.
htao06 9 months ago
@htao06 Hello increasing the Ram should help out a lot I am assuming your running Vista correct?
Sometimes having programs on your machine your not using can also slow things down. It's hard sometime to pin point the problem when there are some many out there....
Docextreme1 9 months ago
@Docextreme1 Thank you very much for the advice. Yes, it comes with Window Vista. I do try to clean my computer by erase some of the stuffs that are building up in the hard drive. It has only gotten slower recently I did all of those activities mentioned earlier.
I will try to get a different web browser and upgrade my RAM. Do you think upgrade my internal hard drive can also help?
htao06 9 months ago
@htao06 You should try going to your computer, then right click your main hard disk drive and go to properties. From there, do a disk cleanup. When another window comes up prompting you to delete certain files, go to the top and you should see a tab called "more options." Click that and you will notice a shadow copies section. Select the clean up button, and in the confirmation box, confirm the delete. That should delete the system restore points that are mostly unneeded. Faster laptop now :D
IyHaytFeesh 9 months ago
@htao06 Upgrading your internal hard will not increase the speed of your machine it will just give you more room to store more files. Focus on the Ram and processor if your looking to increase the speed of your PC

Instead of getting laptop technician to see what kind of RAM you have, just go to the "Crucial memory" website and you download a scanner which shows you what type of RAM your PC/Laptop can use.

Docextreme1 10 months ago
@Docextreme1 Is there any way to get around the 2 Gig limit on my laptop?
NextNate03 10 months ago
so when I buy I stick, is there a limit on how much RAM my machine will take, ie do I look for 2GB or can I go higher. My machine was bought in Canada new in 2007
barrieanddot 10 months ago
@barrieanddot I am assuming your running Vista correct? if so you already have 2GB, on your machine.... If you want to make sure how much your laptop can hold bring it with you when you go to buy the Ram and they will tell you the limit for that machine.....Maybe they will tell you that you can add another 2GB and that's should just fine. Remember there are only two slots, So lets say you have two sticks of 1GB each and they tell you that you can add 1GB more you would replace 1GB with 2GB......
Docextreme1 10 months ago
Your help will be GREATLY appreciated.
barrieanddot 10 months ago
@barrieanddot Well depending on how old your machine is if you increased your Ram it would greatly increase the performance of your machine. It very easy to do as you see in this video

I bought the Satellite C655, and I'm not totally happy with the CPU performance, It maxes out on all my games.
What would I install to increase CPU?
BIGCAL50CAL 10 months ago
@BIGCAL50CAL
Unfortunately, the CPU is generally integrated into the motherboard, so to upgrade you either need to buy a new laptop, or send it in to a computer repair shop and have them swap out the motherboard for one with a better CPU.

hello i got the same laptop as yours, its running 512 in ram but some of my applications are running my pc slow specially in multitasking..a friend told me i should upgarde my ram to 2 gigs or more ..but what confuses me is the ram classification does it matter if tis ddr ddr2 as long as it fits my computer? please reply..
ramirkhan 11 months ago
@ramirkhan Hello it does matter if the Ram is DDR or DDR2 make sure your placing the correct Ram according to the specs. Your machine may only be able to hold a certain amount of ram so your going to have to find out how much.
