  • I would dearly like to get on the Dr. Oz show so i could set the record straight. Im orthorexic and weigh a skeletal 86 pounds. I eat carbs all the time. Clearly carbs don't cause obesity--eating too much does. I eat whole grain carbs all the time. Dr. Oz is contributing to the increase in eating disorders seen in adult women 30+. Ive written to him trying to get his attention on this issue---but my emails go ignored. I say we start a boycott of his show and maybe then he'll pay attention.

  • Anyone saying that they were addicted to pasta or french fries probably has other psychological problems. In December, I quit eating refined carbs, I had no withdrawal symptoms. I've had more trouble quitting drinking than I have not eating carbs.

I stick to whole grain carbs and always make sure to include protein with it.

  • I would like to know how else "Glenn" (sorry can't call this guy a Dr.) other than being the Grain Foods Foundation advisory board chairman benefits from people being obese? I would bet he is heavily invested in pharmaceuticals and other industries that profit from people being obese.

  • There are too many many factors and variables that you have not ruled out. For example, are they sedentary, are their eating habits hard-wired because of how their parents raised them. High carb diet is good after a good hard resistance workout but not if you are just sitting on the couch all day watching tv! You have to be careful how you explain things now these days with the population increasing its obesity rates at an alarming rate.

  • You have to be careful about which carbohydrates you say are good for you because not all of them are! Studies have shown that: "White" carbohydrates, for example, are not good for you, the chlorine dioxide used to bleach them white combines with residual protein in most of these foods to form alloxan, which I'm sure you know, is used by researchers in lab rats to induce DIABETES! So my suggesestion is people stay away from "white" carbs unless they want to get fatter!

  • You are absolutely wrong....when I was this I felt very much fit and enjoyed my life mor... Now I am 15 pounds heavy nd already feeling tired and not able to enjoy life as much , althought I am only 36...., u seriously don,t know what u r talking bou by challenging Dr oz.....book

  • Great video. We need to clear all this misinformation out there!

  • Disagree, more fats and protein! I accurately recorded my daily intake: 36% from protein, 46% from fat,and 17% from carbohydrates. I only get my carbs from fruit and vegetables. (NO GRAINS.) My protein comes from eggs, all types of meats and whey protein. My fats come from butter, cheese, and all natural peanut butter. Not to brag but I look very good, 6-pack abs and very muscular.. SO WHY IS IT LIKE THAT? I AM SURE CARBOHYDRATES (from grains) gives a more chance for the body to put on fat.

  • @iLift94 Glad for you, but the fact that you have visible abs doesn't mean anything. Set your macros and calories according to your goal, fill them with food you like while eating sufficient micronutrients...profit. You won't have better or worst results by eliminating a whole macronutrient group.

Also how would you gain more fat by eating more carbohydrates and less fats while keeping your caloric intake unchanged? Aren't you aware that DNL is a very inefficient pathway in human metabolism?

  • @MrHulk6

"You won't have better or worst results by eliminating a whole macronutrient group"

Evidence of the contrary here: watch?v=eREuZEdMAVo

Full title: The Battle of the Diets: Is Anyone Winning (At Losing?)

Basically, the Atkins group did better in all things measured including weight loss, than the other three groups.

  • @MrHulk6 Dude, is this guy serious? Of course, visible abs are indicative of leaness especially based upon the diet of fats and proteins. This guy is reading directly out of the dietian and nutritionists handbook which both are funded by food companies that want you to eat alot of carbs. Dr. Atkins proved this and thats why mainstream idiots didnt like him because he exposed their stupidity and lack of knowledge concerning metabolism. Every experienced and fitness professionals knows this.

  • Finally a doctor who doesn't say bulls**t. Great video!!

  • Considering how large the fan base of Dr OZ is... I have little hope.. Thanks for providing that hope. If only this video had 400 million views. :/

  • Death to broscience. Really great video. I wish i had you as a nutrition coach

  • No wonder why Americans are the fattest in the world..next genius...

  • @siddu710: Nice job finding the research!

  • @Grainpower

Zioudrou C, Streaty RA, Klee WA. Opioid peptides derived from food proteins. The exorphins. J Biol Chem 1979 Apr 10;254(7):2446-9.

Basically, wheat causes overeating, and naloxone reduces food intake by blocking these exorphins at the cell receptor.

  • @saywhat1961: Hi there! According to Dr. Gaesser, the best diets for a healthy heart and reducing risk (and treating) diabetes are high-carb, high-fiber diets. Diet books by Dean Ornish and the Pritikin Program are probably the best.

  • I am glad someone is speaking up to Dr. Oz. That man has no business in giving dietary advice. I find that the advice Dr Oz gives are usually irresponsible and biased. Restrictive carbohydrate consumption is only required those who are on a diabetic diet, because they are on insulin or type I or have to control their blood sugar for type II. It is more important to eat balance meals and exercise rather than restricting any one food group.

  • ridiculous. just ridiculous.

  • Totally agree!!! I am a huge fan now!!

  • Let me address this whole grain issue. A person never, I repeat never has to take whole grains as long as they have a diet rich in dark green leafy vegetables. They contain more soluble fiber that can be used by the body in comparision to whole grains. In fact whole grains are mainly insoluble and primarily assist in peristalis (moving of food via the intestines) and they absorb some fat which later can be expelled by the body. Whole grains and statin drugs are the biggest rip-offs in america.

  • Let me be crystal clear. Dr. Oz is correct but he did a poor job of explaining it because he is out of his depth. Simple carbohydrates as well as complex carbohydrates (taken in excess of energy expenditures), with the exception of fibrous carbohydrates is directly associated with obesity. Thats one reason why vegetarians are some of the most unhealthy and obese people natural bodybuilder, fitness atheletes and the like may weigh more but its because of lean muscle mass to fat ratio is optimum.

  • @autofill67 Are you retarded the only way you can gain that much weight is because those people are eating way over there caloric maintenance not because of the carbs. Carbs are just a way for fat, lazy and obese people to blame there bad lifestyle. Lol brb eating 1000 calories of bread..... brb eating 10, 000 calories of chicken and olive oil... who do you think is gonna gain more weight? Read a biochemistry book.

  • @Liftfforglory211

    "Read a biochemistry book."

Did you read a biochemistry book yourself? If you did, then maybe you read the chapters on adipocytes and insulin, yes? If you did read those chapters, could you summarize them for us here? Thank you.

  • @JackFook Resistance to the action of insulin to stimuate glucose transport to the skeletal muscle.Insulin resistance can cause high levels of circulating faty acids that get in the way of insulin signalling pathways in the skeletal muscle. This varies among obese people and is said it is associated with obesity and promotes the development of type 2 diabetes. Lol. But obese people are eating way over there caloric maintenance not the carbs it's everything they eat.

  • @Liftfforglory211 Its obvious to me that you are uninformed and maybe youre the smartest person in your family but you have no idea as to what youre talking about. its is one thing to have book knowledge but you need to scrutinize information more closely. The human body doesnt need carbs at all einstein. now, one can eat starchy carbs if ones caloric intake is resticted contigent upon ones genetics and/or caloric expenditures.Muscle requires sugar for work but any excess will be stored as fat.

  • @autofill67 its better to count macros instead of bashing one. You need c/p/f for the best performance and so you dont become deficient.

  • fitness by weight alone but that is because of several factors which are widely know in the fitness community. First, you have body type, which causes your composition of muscle to fat ratio. Second, energy expenditures, which are contigent on how much you excercise as well as your beginning body weight. Suffice it to say that obesity might not be the best word to use verses excess bodyfat to muscle ratio. It is the ratio that characterizes one as being obese and thus obtaining the health risks.

  • This guy is insane. He is on the advisory for the grain industry and is purposely misleading. I am a personal trainer and have been for over 25 years and some of the words hes using are correct however he is not using them in their proper context. The reason my people can get off diabetic medication in 2 weeks is a function of lower overall blood sugar created by excercise or lower simple carb intake for at least 48 hours. The body depletes it by muscle use. It is a fact that one cannot judge

  • @autofill67 while you are correct in your approach to lowering blood sugar with exercise, and I can see that you have a lot of experience in this area. But you misunderstood Dr Gaesser's video. He did not say once that diabetic patients should consume more carbohydrates. He is merely pointing out that there are no correlation between consuming carbohydrate and obesity. That said, I don't completely agree with him that we should all "embrace" carbohydrate, balance is more important.

  • I am so glad to hear what this Dr. Glenn Gaesser has to say. This is common sense and I think people need to start using it...Please keep getting the truth out, people have been confused enough...thanks....

  • caught Dr.Gaesser on Dr.Oz show he claimed that a person on diabetes medicine could kick the meds in two weeks with a heart healthy diet & exercise.. does anyone know where i can find info on a good heart healthy diet? found a few on line was wondering what heart healthy diet Dr.Gaesser recommended ? good show by the way!

  • @saywhat1961 look at the data from the Pritikin program. Here's the info: In research on 652 diabetics, 70% on oral agents left Pritikin free of such medications; 39% on insulin left insulin-free. Participants who continued the Pritikin Program stayed off the medications. Diabetes Care, 17: 1469, 1994.

  • I just saw you on the DR OZ show. In my opinion you won the battle I am also from phx az. Thanks for your wise words we can all learn a few new things.

  • Kudos Dr. Gaesser. What Americans need to understand is that it's not about cutting out carbs or fats or proteins. It's about eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly. The bottom line is, if you eat more calories than you expend, you will gain weight. It doesn't matter if they are "veggie" calories or "pasta" calories. Too many calories is too many calories.

  • Great to see Dr. Gaesser take on the blather from Dr. Oz. Thank you!

  • Really? I don't believe this at all. Being fat but fit is fine???? So all the fat around your heart is healthy? Go on people you can be obese and live a long healthy lifestyle! BS

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, Doctor Oz used to be really credible his first year on scene. I don't know what is happening to this guy, he just recommended Echinecha and some homeopathic drops a few weeks ago....jeez.....he's getting nutty. Seems not to care about science anymore.
