@nickthesmall66, it is one of his ways of "seeing". By moving his head in the rapid, figure-8 motion, he is using his hearing to pick up the way sounds bounce off of objects. It's been described as his radar system.
This is a great, great version of this song. As a Dylan fan, I obviously knew this song well and could see it was yet another example of his song writing genius, but it was never one I'd automatically turn to when searching through my ipod.
But this version, I love. I wasn't around to witness the civil rights movement, and I didn't realise the meaning of the first line in this song until now.
I've been a huge Dylan fan for years. Contrary to some postings here, this is actually the very best cover of this song ever. The crowd actually erupted at the end of this song and the mc said afterward, "It's only going to get better." Well, there were a lot of great performances on this night, but "better"? I don't think so.
You an I must have been separated at birth. I have the concert on VHS tape ( ! ) which I copied from a PBS telecast in 1994 and I refuse to throw away my VCR simply because the tape is the only record I have. This absolutely HAD TO BE one of the single greatest American concerts of all time. I would have given anything to have been there. The cast of musicians was astounding, as was the way G.E. Smith and the house band deferred to them
I actually taped it while it was broadcast on HBO. I paid a friend who had HBO at the time and gave her a VHS tape to broadcast the event. Somehow I lost it over the years.
And you're right about G.E. Smith. You could tell his band was having a blast. And they didn't just rehash Dylan's versions, they made many of the songs sound new and fresh.
@Clerkpro If you watch the whole thing, you'll see Booker T. Jones ( quite the pianist ) give way to Stevie Wonder, you'll see G.E. Smith and no less than Steve Cropper " bow " to Johnny Winter & Clapton & Ronnie Wood & George Harrison & Neil Young and and and...............................Wonder's interpretation of Blowin ( and especially The O Jay's Cover of " Emotionally Yours " ) show the REAL genius of Dylan.....his songs can be performed in so many different ways, inspirational always.
This was for the "30th anniversary" show for Bob Dylan, NYC, Madison Square Garden, October of 1992. Wonder makes reference to the upcoming presidential election. Some of the very best artists at the time came on and did covers of Dylan songs. It was great! GE Smith and the other band mates were fantastic. You can get the concert on VHS but as far as I know it hasn't been digitalized - I'm sure that's going to happen soon.

Best cover of this version ever and it will always be! What a feeling, what a speech, what an emotion! Stevie, you nailed it and you made this song immortal - thank you!
I remember, all those years ago, watching this gig looking forward to Neil Young ( I wasn't disappointed ) but this track blew my head off. This is one of the great renditions of any track. 10/10. :)
This is by leaps and bounds the best rendition of this song. And I've heard many. It seems like the audience was confused as to when to sing the refrain. Also, after this cuts out, an announcer comments that "it's only going to get better." Ah, no, sir, it didn't and it doesn't.

When I think of acts that stole shows, I think of the drummer from Santana at Woodstock along with Albert Lee from 10 Years After. During this concert there was this performance by Mr. Wonder, and of course Johnny Winter. The guy blew everyone away before he even tuned his guitar. The guy behind Stevie should get the best supporting "singer" award.

I have this original 45 record from the 60's and have played it so often since then (even tho' it has a crack in it!).It always makes me groove.
It has that sound of "sweet soul music" from that era. Just the best arrangement and execution of this song.
