This is a great collection, Val! Easy to see where Donald was aiming his camera then. :-)
My Dad had tales and photos of his own of some of the AMAZING artwork done on those planes, and as you said in the description, such frivolity served as an enormous morale boost when they needed all they could get.
And 40+ years later, when we flew for fun in his Cessna Skyhawk, he christened her "Foxy Lady." No nose art other than her name, but it was done with solid reverence for that memory.
I think the art helped to remind the guys what they were fighting for, what was waiting for them when the war was over -- the safe lives of all their loved ones back home. Thanks for posting this fascinating bit of history!
I was born in 1952, but I do remember a lot of this. In no way was the nose art meant to degrade women. Not at all. So, you people who feel this way, get a life! These guys risked their lives (and others lost theirs) so you can sit on your butt and complain about the art work . DameEdithDevine, you are the new lady of the 21st century. I would love to just meet and talk with you (including your wonderful husband). Thanks for sharing these wonderful memories. You are wonderful!
WHY DID THE MOD BAN NOSE ART! POLITICALLY INCORRECT MY ARSE!
