Why set up base in a valley? Why not set base on high ground? An enemy sniper can pick them off from the hills.

Did you notice the terrain? We can not set up a base on the top of an acme. There would be no decent way to resupply. We have forward outposts on top of hills, yes. But to build and supply a base is a logistical nightmare that requires a lot of room. A mere example would be, where would we park the vehicles on top of a pointed hill or mountain? That is the challenge. Nothing more, nothing less.
