Search Distrowatch and install some free GNU/Linux distro with minimal hw requirements to save environment, money, help people in need to get PC or laptop.
I update my desktop components (even my Motherboard if necessary).
If I DO have an old computer (occasionally I run into one) then I'll either use it for generating bitcoins (although the bitcoin market is starting to fail now) or using it as a linux terminal machine.
I normally like restoring the computers so they can work back again and it depends, if it´s a PC from 1995, I will install W.95, if it´s from the 2000, I will install either W.98, 2000, Me (well, ME actually, no, not at all. Gotta know why xD) And then so on, W.XP and blah blah blah. I like collecting old stuff and make it work and because of that probably in September I will be buying the NES.
'01 or newer computer: DVR (as mentioned if it has a good video card for its time) or file server (or all server functions).
Late '90s computer: Print server and legacy stuff (be it games that really like Windows 9x, or utilizing obsolete hardware that connects via endangered or extinct ports).
Pre-Win9X: Legacy things you can't live without.
BTW, I sandbox on my main computer, but not its hard drive. (I unplug my main drives and use other stuff for storage.)
Sometimes i give them away to people who can use it, but one pc i kept, nice backup if my current pc breaks or something :P that pc runs ubuntu now =) runs totally fine, it's an dell with an p4 1.6ghz and 1gb ram... but well, my other pc's are at friends now or are dead xD
I buried my old computers. Give them a nice funeral. Do a little last worship ritual and wave goodbye. Just like with any other thing or person that dies.
Almost every old computer of mine is put in the basement and gets added to my servercluster. Rendering with Blender for example gets faster with every computer i add! :D
since your new pc can do thesame things your older does, but 500 times faster.... you can just use the older for setting up a server ( mail server, game server..you'll find something useful, if you are a "pr0"), testing for virus/use the hard disk for back up( if you are noob...) or just give it away to your granny or someone in your family that hasn't a pc... it can be useful in a shop (inventory, list etc) restaurant( wi-fi control, menù handle etc)...
If it as old as the original Macintosh or Commodore 64, you should probably keep them because it is rare. My dad has a good ol' Commodore 64 that he is going to boot up soon. Money doesn't matter guys!!! Rare computers are rare. I know you get a lot of money if you sell them, but keep them because they might be yours and you could upgrade it to keep them in use.

My router / firewall / storage / BOINC is a Thinkpad 560X Laptop with 166MHz @ 96MB RAM. Used to have a 701Cs "butterfly", but it's routing performance wasn't too fancy. Also the IBM PS/Note is perfect for playing around with DOS games..
I resurrected my old 12 year old computer buy tossing out the outdated motherboard for a newer better budget Biostar motherboard, popped in a new CPU & 2GBs ram, etc - and VROOOM! New Computer in an old can - and YES - i modded the case out from its bland white factory color to Red & Blue, cut out a place in the side panel for a 80mm fan with a Spider-web fan grill (will paint spider webs on my case later) - So its now a new computer for about $150 ! Not bad for average use including streaming.
I have an IBM PS/2 L40 SX laptop from 1991 that still works perfectly. I use it as a classic gaming computer, and it works great to play old DOS games such as Wolfenstein 3D, Alley Cat, Arcade Volleyball, OutRun, ZZT, Tetris, and Arkanoid. I also have the snake game on there, which was written by someone in 2005 for old machines, and it's the same game that you find on old cell phones. So if you have a working 386 machine, it's great for running a bunch of old DOS games.
@Matrix803 I have one, it's running Win 3.11 on MS-DOS 6.22 and I use it to run Sequencer Plus Jr with an OmniLabs AudioMaster AMS-8000. It's a gift from my uncle and I really love it!!!
Chris, you may give away your old computer to family and friends which is nice but NEVER with your hard drive in it. You never know if your Aunt will throw away the "given" PC in the trash with your HD in and fall into the wrong hands as data can be retrieved even after several formats especially if you pay big bucks for a data recovery software, not the average "consumer" one... You will be surprised how it can retrieve the veryFIRST thing ever stored there. I'm sure you know that.
In 20 years from now, we won't have to worry about that. Laptops and probably desktops will be switching to SSD's, and as far as I know, you can't retrieve old formatted partitions from those kind of drives.
Usually keep them until they are truly fouled-ubar. I have my sisters, a Dell Latitude C540s, that currently runs Lubuntu (with Compiz, 128MB main RAM, 32MB Video RAM). Trust me, with my tweaks, it runs BOOYA!!!!!!!! with Compiz. I'm currently (8:18 PM GMT) copying over half the HDD so I can resize and remove XP, and gove Lubuntu more space.
I'm running xubuntu in an 400mhz Pentium II computer! not really slow as it used to be with the XP but still uses over 50% of CPU usage when there's no processes!
@aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa78815 the damn small linux UI is bleak and not friendly, not to mention the incompatibly with most of the apps on the internet, and lack of updates.
still okay overall with xubuntu, since I'm only using it for simple docs and backup web browser, heck even I threw it when I bought a new mac mini :D
RECYCLE WITH LINUX. I'm typing right now from a 733 MHz / 256 MB RAM emachines clunker from 2001 that is running Puppy Linux 5.1. I have flawless wireless Internet, Chrome, Firefox, VLC Player, GIMP, Google Earth, OpenOffice suite, DVD player, streaming audio...tons of programs. I download torrents and have tons of fun. Plus I don't worry about viruses and I don't pay a dime for it all. BOO-YAH.
@TheGeeksftw I'm fucking serious. It works on a 733 MHz comp with Puppy Linux 5.1 . The spinning of the globe sucks (bec of old hardware), but the zoom in to anywhere on earth works just fine. Helps if you disable unnecessary features (like restaurants, etc) and set the settings to lower rendering.
Hi I have a compaq desktop a 2 year ago that amd it good but now it have problem when I using it for a while it freeze I clean out the dust and reapply therme paste and add fan but it still have that problem I think it have motherboad issue can you give me advise for it thanks
I find them new homes. Give them to friends. You can still type papers and surf the web on a 233mhz computer. You will have some trouble playing this vid though. Try craigslist free as well. Anything older than P2 isn't as useful, unless your a tinkerer.
@bmulpeter Good for you, but remember to go outside every once in a while. Internet can be a time vacuum, and you must be aware of its addictive potential.
@Meclesky07 As a general rule of thumb: it's a good idea to get rid of stuff that you haven't used in a year, unless you know you are going to need it.
My neighbor is using an old Hewlett Packard 80486 machine running at 20 MHz with 8 MHz of ram. He uses MS windows 3.1 with a Lotus package that has a word processor and a spreadsheet. He has a printer with it as well.
He has no desire to go "on line" and use the Internet.
This setup cost him $2,000.00 in 1991. He hasn't spent a dime on a computer since then. That's 19 years at about $100.00 per year and it serves his needs.
I am a technology addict myself and I really like the way how technology evolves, even tough my budget is limited I have quite a strong pc to make sure that I don't need something better at the moment until I am forced to replace it with something new and better, I would probably do it like you.
even tough I am a 15 years old I make interactive realtime 3D applications, make professional presentations, 2D/3D art, design, create music and much more stuff, I might sound like a lier, but I am not. You can check my work at dxstudio(d-0-t)com my username is LF, !THIS IS NOT ADVERTISING SO NO REASON FOR SPAM! it's only the proof.
Anyway, Chris you should see the fact that there are some good old memories when you just know when to bring them back. All that stuff I did on my old pc n the new 1
well the fact is that almost every important part of my computer experience I learned it while I was using the old computer that had AMD Athlon 1600+ Nvidia mx440se 64 mb video memory and 512 mb ram (2x256)
What I used that pc for was:
Making realtime 3D applications (of course it lagged a lot on my old pc because it didn't have that great resources, it was good at it's time but imagine, that I used that pc since 2003 until in 2009 I got my new pc)
When i upgraded to my i7 quad core I hooked up my old computer (dual core) in the living room to the HDTV. We now spend more time watching stuff online than on regular TV channels. Plus my girlfriend can now play World Of Warcraft with me using ths computer instead of her laptop. Would be lost without it now, lots of fun to be had :)
My Dad is total idiot when it comes to Technology. Listen dad this is 2009 not the 80's I had my old Windows 95 computers in storage and when my dad couldn't afford storage anymore he took my computers and put them with the Furniture in the U-share pile who ever has my Windows 95 computers I hope your enjoying all my child hood games on it.
32MB ram something like 200 MHz and it has windows 98 almost full pc keyboard mouse monitor but no speakers im planning to make a home network with my 2 PC"s
i need a new computer my computer i have now is an old windows 98 and only 30gb and i whant to have music and fast computer whith more memory and can u plz give me 1
I'm writing this from a 1999 Gateway Essential 400 MHz running Windows 98 with 192 MB of RAM.
I use the SlimBrowser as an IE6 enhanced browser with tabs.
I have a USB wireless Internet stick for Internet and I can do almost anything I need to on a newer computer (except produce videos, music, play new games).
Old comps are great if you use them for what they do best. I have a new laptop w/ Win7 RC, but I put my daily wear and tear on my Win98 desktop and treat my laptop like a baby.
But I hate and love it when people throw out their old computers (usually there's NOTHING wrong with them). Because I can take them out of the dumpster LOL
I have personally found 3 PCs and 1 Mac literally thrown away here in Los Angeles in the last few months.
There was nothing physically wrong with them. I just reformatted the hard drives and installed Windows XP or 2000 and presto!
I now have 7 computers, most of which I got for free. Sadly, people gave away perfectly good computers because they didn't understand basic PC maintenance principles.
I take them apart and if something breaks what are you goin to do and sometimes I scrap but ehh. My friend hands them down and thats how I got my laptop lol anyways I love your show. Another geek here so yay!
save parts for modding, give the pc to someone that doesn't have, or installing Sprite, Solaris-MC, Mach, Chorus, Spring, Amoeba, Taos, etc. and try connect them all and make it into one computer for whatever...
Just as there is a "second tier market" for used cars, so is there a "market" for old computers. You can buy cheap RAM, set them up as school computers for your young kids, use them as an MP3 jukebox, or even put them online as a personal cloud server using something like Tonido.
I took my old emachines 733i tower and PIMPED it out: * 256 MB RAM * 256 MB video card * wireless USB DSL for Internet * installed entire Office 2000 suite * installed Opera browser (for speed) * installed older Photoshop, WinAmp, Magix Movie Maker, etc * have a collection of 50 PC games (real cheap now!) * installed Keynote as substitute for MS OneNote * my son uses it for his school reports, plus learning "computer stuff" like the video says * new CD burner * game emulators and ROMs galore
If you care about, how it looks, Opera is awesome. I'm not saying there are problems with Opera, either; however, Opera is slower than Firefox, IE, Safari, and most other browsers at rendering pages. So I would prefer to save the couple seconds of time. It builds up. lol
well i inheritted 10 working computers and 5 broken ones well not really broken just needed new parst that my dad was to busy to fix i got the comps because my dad shut down his old factory and opened a new one so i got all the pc's i just had to make some upgrades and i took two of them and the other 12 i used for an internet cafe which is doing really well cause the computers have games or if you dont want to play you can use the internet or print stuff and it easily made up for the upgrades 1
I keep them preciously. Since we do not use them to go on the Internet, they serve primarily as backups for documents, favorites, etc. Plus, with genuine MS-DOS, there are a lot of old classic games that run perfectly without us having to resort to compatibility features (like on XP) or downloading this emulator to run the game or that software so we can hear the sounds of the game! :P
after all, some day when computers have yottabyte hard drives and terrabytes of RAM, also i probably have kids, i want them to experience computers as i saw them!
We donate ours to a gentalman in town who rebuilds them and gives them away every christmas to children in need, schools and orphanages. He also gives away rebuilt bikes.
use it for testing malware

I keep my first laptop I ever owned under my bed. It was new and top notch at the time.
Specs:
Celeron clocked at 266 MHz.
32 MB of SIMM RAM.
300 MB HDD.
Via 16 MB VRAM onboard video.
Came with Windows 98.
Hard plastic case with a faded black color.
It now has Demi Small Linux running on it and it runs just fine.
Other than for show though... it serves no use.

We can speed up our old systems by:
-- cleaning system junk
-- optimizing computer services
-- optimizing internet
-- repairing registry
-- defraging registry
-- clearing browsers junk
do these things with some secure tool such as Intel Software Partner Reginout.
Thanks

My neighbor is using an old Hewlett Packard 80486 machine running at 20 MHz with 8 MHz of ram. He uses MS windows 3.1 with a Lotus package that has a word processor and a spreadsheet. He has a printer with it as well.
He has no desire to go "on line" and use the Internet.
This setup cost him $2,000.00 in 1991. He hasn't spent a dime on a computer since then. That's 19 years at about $100.00 per year and it serves his needs.
SMART.

1) Install Linux
2) Storage vault
3) Let kids use it
4) Experiment with different OSes
5) Install emulator games
Today's used PCs are so affordable that there is almost no use for a comp that is less than 1.2 GHz.

I am a technology addict myself and I really like the way how technology evolves, even tough my budget is limited I have quite a strong pc to make sure that I don't need something better at the moment until I am forced to replace it with something new and better, I would probably do it like you.
BlaBlaBlaZ2 2 years ago
even tough I am a 15 years old I make interactive realtime 3D applications, make professional presentations, 2D/3D art, design, create music and much more stuff, I might sound like a lier, but I am not. You can check my work at dxstudio(d-0-t)com my username is LF, !THIS IS NOT ADVERTISING SO NO REASON FOR SPAM! it's only the proof.
Anyway, Chris you should see the fact that there are some good old memories when you just know when to bring them back. All that stuff I did on my old pc n the new 1
BlaBlaBlaZ2 2 years ago
well the fact is that almost every important part of my computer experience I learned it while I was using the old computer that had AMD Athlon 1600+ Nvidia mx440se 64 mb video memory and 512 mb ram (2x256)
What I used that pc for was:
Making realtime 3D applications (of course it lagged a lot on my old pc because it didn't have that great resources, it was good at it's time but imagine, that I used that pc since 2003 until in 2009 I got my new pc)
I used that old junk for programming and more.

I have a new laptop w/ Win7 RC, but I put my daily wear and tear on my Win98 desktop and treat my laptop like a baby.

the problem is that computers that are that old is you need to replace sooooo much, its really not even worth it
wbrown633 2 years ago
Do what I did:
1) Add the max available RAM to your computer (usually 256 MB for older comps). Memory is dirt cheap nowadays.
2) Reinstall Windows 98, fresh install
3) Uninstall any useless programs
4) Go to oldversion(dot)com for older versions of WinAmp, Acrobat, etc.
5) Use a fast browser like Opera..it has tabs and you can surf with images off for increased speed
6) Add a USB Internet stick for wireless surfing (requires you already have wireless modem in your house)
7) Defrag

But I hate and love it when people throw out their old computers (usually there's NOTHING wrong with them). Because I can take them out of the dumpster LOL
Technoguy3 2 years ago
I have personally found 3 PCs and 1 Mac literally thrown away here in Los Angeles in the last few months.
There was nothing physically wrong with them. I just reformatted the hard drives and installed Windows XP or 2000 and presto!
I now have 7 computers, most of which I got for free. Sadly, people gave away perfectly good computers because they didn't understand basic PC maintenance principles.
TruthandJustice101 2 years ago 2
I agree; a lot of people seem to do that. I have definitely wanted someone to throw out a Mac though! Definitely need one. =P

Just as there is a "second tier market" for used cars, so is there a "market" for old computers. You can buy cheap RAM, set them up as school computers for your young kids, use them as an MP3 jukebox, or even put them online as a personal cloud server using something like Tonido.

GUNITe12gangsta 2 years ago
my emachines old 733i has a limit of 256 MB RAM. Which makes it for an interesting challenge.
I have a USB wireless connector that connects it to my wireless Internet.
By installing Firefox extensions like AdBlock and NoScript, I actually can make it surf the web pretty smooth and fast.
TruthandJustice101 2 years ago
Umm... 256mb of RAM? 256mb vid card????? Office 2000 is old, Opera sucks. I'm sorry, but that is not pimped lol.
Technoguy3 2 years ago
Opera Sucks? What? Explain this...
I'm very happy right now with Opera 10 beta 2
pyrotechnaguy 2 years ago
If you care about, how it looks, Opera is awesome. I'm not saying there are problems with Opera, either; however, Opera is slower than Firefox, IE, Safari, and most other browsers at rendering pages. So I would prefer to save the couple seconds of time. It builds up. lol
