  • Beautiful version - I recall this being used as the haunting ending to episodes of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy on BBC TV when I was young.

  • Thanks for posting this. It is quite beautiful!

  • Just beautiful.

American boys can sing like that, given the training, encouragement, and respect. There are some fine boys' choirs in the U.S., affiliated with churches and not. However, as with all classical music in this country, the importance of supporting fine classical music (especially choirs with opportunities for boys and girls) is unfortunately ignored. Some of this is because of the money paid for sports, and requiring boys to be macho. We should encourage boys to be creative, too.

  • geoff burgon btw

  • Praise God Almighty!!! The Lord Jesus Christ is the consolation of Israel whom Simeon longed for!!

  • Long on threats and insults short on facts all with bad grammar and often chancy spelling. Instead wasting their time on YT they should maybe go back to school,

    Aled

  • Diolch yn fawr Aled. Byddwch yn dal i ganu hyfryd a Ben hefyd

    Aled

  • These guys/girls in their faded bathrobes claim to protect our kids from these nasty old paedophiles but they never give examples of the abuse that they claim to control. If they did we might take them seriously. The conflate pedophilia with Jewishness, Obviously these are mischief making Nazis. Why do we bother? This beautiful music they wish to ruin with their hate messages. Nunc Dimittis was one of my favourites as a chorister.

  • 111Yamato...while people like you have fun abusing children here on YT, others dedicate some time everyday to keep you freaks under control. I call this a job cause I am serious about it. Again, you will learn this too.

  • Try harder pedophile...you can't write more than ONE line?...you are too lazy and this is what will put you in jail soon...you are lazy and dumb and you will make a mistake that will put FBI in your front door...LOL...

  • @111Yamato you will learn, like many of your fellow pedophile freaks did, that it is not easy to discredit a person who is doing a serious job. Your brother can tell you about false accusations, although I think right now he is embarassed to be your brother.

  • @TheReptube a job?LOLThis is a job?You work for you tube?LOL,funny.green shull you sould try out on snl

  • RugburnX AKA 111Yamato is a butthurt pedofreak trying to fool people with a "new" trick: sock accounts...pathetic...

  • Delusional pedophile below...I hope the boys are on tour otherwise they will be in trouble.

  • @TheReptube delusional pedo freak below.ban him

  • I never had a chance to solo the Nunc Dimmitis when I was a treble but I just loved it, the quiet peace of the chant, the words and the sentiments behind the words. I sang it as a member of the St James choir, Muswell Hill but I always thought it much too short. Thanks for this. Ben Crawley had a very lovely voice. Boy, how he grew. Not for nothing is he known as Big Ben. When I am over there I always go to South London and visit that lovely church just hoping the boys are not on tour. Aled

  • *Chills*

  • I picture music like this as one of God's greatest gifts to us all

  • beautiful ben

  • Yay Ben!

  • Singing the Nunc Dimittis is one of my favorite parts of Compline! I am a baritone and would live to do this duet version with one of the sopranos in my choir. Where can I get sheet music of this arrangement?

  • does it really matter how it's pronounced? I agree that the two should agree if singing at the same time, but since they are echoing, it does not matter as much. I'd really rather sit back and enjoy the music.

But if you really must discuss latin, please do not forget that there are may different pronounciations out there, from classical, to church, from italianate to germanic...

  • Quite right picardythirds!! Is it so dificult to understand that there is NO international or even English standard way of pronouncing latin?? I´m sure that even in Roman times, there were differences in regional pronunciation, or even within Rome itself!!!!

  • my favorite part is when Ben sings that high pitch on people 1:14. I can't get over how beautiful that sounded, even though hes not in Libera anymore, I'm glad that he shared his wonderful gift with the world.

  • Omg! Gorgeous, Bravo BRAVO!!This made my night!

  • This is part of the Lutheran Order of Communion, and ALWAYS played much more upbeat. this almost sounds like a funeral setting.

  • I think the tempo is correct. This is after all a Nunc Dimittis (the words are of the old man Simeon in the Gospel of Luke saying he can now die in peace now that he has seen baby Jesus, the Messiah). Paul Phoenix's 1979 recording for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is the most famous recording and he sang it at this tempo.

  • @llarzelere ...and is used at funerals, for it speaks of completion and fulfilment.

  • In Episcopal and Church of England/Canada Choirs it is ALWAYS Is-RAY-EL. Not Eye.

  • Comment removed

  • In classical music ISRAEL is always pronounced IS-R-EYE-ELL, not IS-RAE-ELL. So it would appear that the tenor is correct, and the boy soprano is incorrect. But this is common among singers. Many people pronounce In Excelsis Deo as In-EK-sell-sis, or In-egg shell-sis. Both are wrong. It SHOULD be EEN-EX-CHEL-SEES. There is no IN in latin.

  • If the piece is in Latin you should say Ees- Rah-El. But if the piece is in English you have more options. These singers availed themselves of both of them in the same piece!

I agree it should be EEN not In, but I think many choirmasters tell their choirs to say "Egg-Shell," to keep the consonants more together.

  • I think it should be "echelsis". "ch" as in "church". Let's not forget that this is not classical but church Latin. I've heard "ekskelsis" which would be classical Latin and that definitely IS incorrect in a religious piece.

  • simply amazing!!

  • Simply Beautiful.

  • I notice the two singers don't agree on how to pronounce "Israel."

  • Aled has always pronounced 'Israel' the way he does..listen to him as a boy sing this song. Exactly the same.

  • Interesting arrangement as a duet though I think on balance I prefer it with an instrumentalist on the second part. Love the recording though. Aled Jones is awesome.

  • Einfach, welt klasse!!!

    SUPER!

  • He is as clear and beautiful as Chloe Agnew! What a delightful and angelic voice!

  • This is simply beautiful... very inspiring and reverend; beautiful voices with nice blend.

  • Ben Crawley was the best singer at libera like tom cully now.

  • i hear Tom's voice has changed now. so sad!!

  • that´s the age, it´s normal.

  • Ahh..i am sure he still has a good voice.

  • Why is it that there(seems to be)so many fewer American boys that sing like this, or at least show they can?

  • In our "macho" society a boy fears he would be seen as a "sissy" if he should sing at all.

  • there is The American Boychoir...and the Ohio Boychoir...

  • Even in European countries, you are called a gay if you sing 'those kind of songs'.

Now we don't even have the right to like a certain kind of music without being called by names...

  • yeah but their not as good as Libera I think. Libera's harmonies are incredible

  • @SDG1750 The Columbus Boychoir (what you're calling the Ohio Boychoir, I think) is now called The American Boychoir. In fact that change occurred decades ago. The American Boychoir is in Princeton, NJ.

  • @kirinphoebe1 no we had a smallish boy choir here in Ohio too, just called The Ohio Boy Choir, but they disbanded actually I think it was a year or two ago. Sad.

  • does anyone know where you can get this so i can have it on my ipod?

  • This song is on the CD "Aled"

  • Absolutely beautiful. I can remember when Aled was a treble and it's great to hear that his voice is still something special.

  • i like ben more with his hair cut! hes like mybrotehrs best friend, they wer both inlibera togethr :) x

  • Wow!! Your brother was in Libera???

  • yeah for sure

  • What do you mean??

  • do you really believe that? laughs

  • As a matter of fact I DON'T believe it, but we also can't say that she's lying!! Chances aren't very high that her brother was in Libera, or that he knows Ben Crawley at all, but we probably shouldn't be jumping to conclusions about how its not true!!

  • why can't any American boys show that they can sing like that??? I need a Brit boy....

  • Some do =) Just not as many as in Great Britain!!

  • Some do =) Just not as many as in Great Britain!!

  • Stunning! I don't know what to say...

  • two of the most wonderful treble voices past and present. Now compimenting each other in a different way.

    wonderful
