I am a male nurse currently working in INDIA,the way we nurses treated is horrible, that is why people are not choosing this profession.Management and people in India consider nurses as their slaves.
I'm a male. I have less than a year of school left for my RN. People can say whatever they want. Nurses make amazing money, + your surrounded by good looking women, atleast through school.
As far as thinking you are going to be able to get a job just because you are a male nurse, don't count on it. 30 years ago it might be true but not in this economy. I was always told that there was a shortage of male public school teachers so I became one only to complete my credential right when the economy tanked. I have gone to interviews only to learn later that the person hired was female which always seems suspicious when just about everybody on the interview team is female as well.

This news article perpetuates the lie...pay attention folks. Currently with this economy there is not a nursing shortage, new grads with RNs and BSNs are not getting jobs sometimes for years. Do a google or YouTube search for "no jobs for nursing grads" to find the truth. Yes there is a nursing shortage...but in this economy there is a far greater shortage of hospitals willing to hire a new grad so forget about a job.
I myself am a nurse and I have in a group of 29 girls and 1 guy, I,, I myself am living and studying in Ukraine! Originally was going to learn that the nurse would be trading in the U.S. by profession)) If anyone can share information on the work of a nurse in the U.S. then please add a Skype nickname: makarov0408
I'm trying to get into nursing so that I have a good career and do something meaningful day to day. I am male and there are very few of us. I don't care if someone thinks it's a woman's job or for homosexual men because when I hit the bar after work I can tell people I saved someone's life today, or that I saw a new life enter the world. Even better yet, witnessing the craziness of people and being there to be a part of it is rewarding.
im 16 and i go to a magnet program to study CNA i am in my second year and im a male and i love what i do and i dont care what people think off me. if its what i love im not going to let no one get in the way of completing my profession!
Nursing is a predominantly feminist, working class, and female profession. In reality, there are NO laws protecting men in nursing from discrimination in education or employment. The aforementioned results in fewer men in nursing and the predominance of men in nursing who are effeminate, gay, and working class as those that deviate from the same are considered inappropriate for nursing with the result that they are excluded from the same.
@Georgia37890 What you say is sadly true up to a point. It's either foreign-born, gay or decidedly working-class men who seem to be in nursing. Not all are though. I know some straight, middle-class professional men with nursing degrees but they are mostly from the armed forces and have gone on to things like pharmacy or the like.
I am a male and I want to become a nurse because hospitals need male. That's not the main reason why I want to become a nurse, but it is one of the reason I chose this career.
@thugricanz ....Well I'm studying to be a male nurse and I really, really hate the thought of it. I have absolutely no interest in treating the "human side" of a patient. The other day I stepped over a homeless woman laying on the side walk crying and never looked back. I could careless. I only want to be involved in the technical aspect of the field which is treating injuries. But unfortunately nursing is the quickest route to a decent paycheck and that's why I'm going into it.
@chrissline77 Oh, that's why you're going for it? Just be careful not to get fired. :) I think it is a failure if people only go nursing for paycheck... To be honest, money is not important in my life at all.. I mean, I need to make some money for a living. I am sure I will earn that money as a nurse. :)
Perhaps if YOU get an uncaring, emotionless vessel such as yourself 'looking after' you next time you're in hospital and you're needing some real *care*, then you may realise you're not cut out for the job. Having both parents in their 60's, when hospital visits are more common, I've seen the difference caring nurses can make to well being and recovery. I find your mercenary attitude quite unsettling, truth be told, and I also hope any potential employers are perceptive to it.
This is how chrissline77 replies when you point out his his mercenary "I'm in for the paycheck, couldn't care less for people" crap. He won't post it public, but chooses to hide behind a PM:
Me:"I find your mercenary attitude quite unsettling, truth be told, and I also hope any potential employers are perceptive to it."
"They won't be. I'm a good actor. By the way you look like a fag in your picture. Don't bother with a reply back. I won't read it. Now fuck you and your mother."
I graduated last year as an RN. I've been sending applications and resumes all over the country, but have had no luck finding a job. I'm not sure where they get their information about the demand growing for nurses as no hospitals seem to want or to be hiring new grads. It's discouraging that I put in years of hard work to get my RN and the hospitals won't even look at new grads.
@michael02189: Michael, perhaps you've found work now, but if you have not; there are jobs for RNs in most big cities even in this economy. The military also needs nurses, if that route appeals to you. You'll have to be willing, as a new grad, to work off-hours that more experienced people don't want, usually nights, and probably in a tough neighborhood, or innercity hospital. You'll have to do your share of weekends, too; comes with the gig. Keep looking.
@michael02189 I hope you have found a job by now. But my advice to new grads would be you must go outside of your comfort zone. Look for nursing jobs in other states. Make sure you have an excellent resume including ACLS, TNCC, Stroke Certification, CPI, Ekg Cert... These are one to two day classes that really will skyrocket your resume to the top of the pile. Do not just submit a resume with Basic Life Support.
