  • I love the voice of Mary!

  • dark island is one off my favorite tunes had it playing at my wedding in 1988

  • Nice one. My father uist to have the single. I think the guitarrist was her husband.

  • I haven't heard Mary singing this song before, I had forgotten what a beautiful voice she has! Thank you :-)

  • @simnebrael You are very welcome. Thanks for taking the time to add a note :-)

  • @UISTMAN59 This was my Mam's favourite tune - she was a Pipe Major - my Aunt (Mam's Sister) still breaks down every time she hears it.

It is all the more special if the stories are true that Mary Didn't learn the Gaelic till she was in her 20's - wonderful thought. Thanks again. I am subscribing to your channel - you have such a wealth of music :-)

  • I (Japanese) love this song since I first heard more than 30 years ago.

  • Beautiful :)

  • MARY SANDEMAN, I CAN' T BELIEVE IT, AS SOON AS I HEARD THIS FOR THE FIRST TME I THOUGHT OF JAPANESE BOY, A SONG THAT HAS NOT EVEN ENTERED MY MIND FOR TEN YEARS AT LEAST. UISTMAN59, PLEASE KEEP ON POSTING AS I WANT TO FOLLOW YOUR PROGRESS, IT' S SO IMPORTANT TO THE FUTURE CARING GENERATIONS.CAN YOU HELP ME FIND INA MILLER , LOVELY SCOTTISH SINGER. SHE' S THE UNKNOWN STILL TO BE PROPRLY APPRECIATED.

  • I do believe you saved the best for this third post, Iain! Lovely! And I thought the first post was so beautiful! Love all three, but this the best, for me!

  • Uibhistman - would you be able to message me the lyrics to this song and a translation? It would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for putting up all this great Gaelic music :)

  • Oh Marie !

    Merci Marie !

  • my late mother played this ballad on her fiddle when we were young in portpatrick scotland. it holds for me good and nice memories. thanks for posting it xxxxx

  • Beautiful. How on earth did this evolve into Aneka?

  • Probably because Mary has a sense of humour as well as a great voice :-)

  • Don't get me wrong. I love Aneka. The album is brilliant and totally underated. I just wonder how the whole thing came to happen. Whatever, long live Mary Sandeman and Aneka.

  • Math gu leor! Tha mi ag ionnsachadh Gaidhlig, ach cha'n urrainn dhomh a bruidhinn cho mhath...

This is a lovely version, but... my absolutely favorite rendition of "An t-Eilean Dorcha" is by David Solley. It's a man's song, really, so I like it better with a male soloist, and he sings it so clearly it's easy to hear all the words. His performance (album of the same name) is just splendid.

  • Thanks for the note.

  • Tha thu ga sgriobhadh gle mhath, mo charaid -- cum a' dol e

  • Good song!! thanks for posting.

  • No sorry, didnt receive your email

  • How come the gealic sounds so immotive? Beatiful and haunting.I have visited the western isles on several occassions and loved it.

  • Dhéisd mi rithe nuair a sheinn i còmhla ris an Scottish Fiddle Orchestra. Seinneadair glé mhath a thinnte

  • Tha thu ceart!

  • I am looking to get a gaelic version of Dark Island. Can you help?

  • I replied by email - did you get it?

  • fantastic song thanks for sharing

  • I cant stop listening to this ! its one off the most beautiful songs Ive ever heard ! thankyou x

  • Thanks for noting your appreciation. I have to say that I love this song too, and the voice of Mary Sandeman.

  • Would that be "Plum Logan" holding the bear, the faces in that picture look familiar.

  • My father's brother is beside the man holding the bear, and looking directly at the camera. He was in the Queen's Own Highlanders but I don't know the others. That doesn't answer your question but might give you a clue.

  • If i,am not mistaken the photograph was taken befor this group embarked for Singapore, early 60s. I saw "Plum" a couple of years ago at the regimental gathering in Inverness and I will be up for the BBQ at the end of August. The video and music are first class I will be spending a few hours going through the rest of them. Many thanks

  • Wow this song is really nice! Love it though i don't understand a single word!

    Thanks =)

  • Anyway is this Mary Sandeman also known as Aneka? The one who sang "Japanese Boy".

  • This is the same woman.

  • So nice,perfect notes 5 stars .

  • Thanks celticoffspring. Glad you enjoyed the song.

  • very nice singing of Mary Sanderman. 5 stars.

  • Sandeman :)

  • Thanks mmasny.

  • This seems quite personal; and is very good.

I suspect you may know the folk in the last photos. Anyway, I enjoy it very much.

    Best wishes

  • Thanks Uistman another great posting, a lovely song.

  • Thanks lorgain, I'm glad you liked it.

  • I remember the old Macbraynes bus. My granny lived by the shore of Loch Duich and many a bone rattling journey I spent on those buses LOL LOL LOL

  • I am fairly sure the other bus pictured is a MacAulay's bus ( a local firm) We used to shout "Put another peat on the fire!" Ah, the good old days.

  • There was another bus that used to do the west runs, they were light blue, but I can't remember the company

  • She does a nice job of it

  • It's a very amazing music, and the photos are moving.

5 stars, this goes in my favorites!

  • Thanks pennycarrol.
