i bought one of these w laser and night sights for 359.00! however the slide to frame fit seems very loose. rattles when shaken side to side. none of the others at the shop do this. should i send it back? still have not shot it
Ever hear of the phrase "get what you pay for" ? lol, this might be the case here. If not, then you made out hardcore. I bought mine for $520 a year ago.
@arnoldstwin36 FYI the p238 comes with both night sights and regular. was backorder black friday deal manu date 12/11/2011. only a sucker pay $520 w/o laser, which i sold for $100 lol
I feel your videos help undecided civilians everywhere. I have been active duty for 8 years now and still watch any videos available to me from your posts before making my final purchase. I have now made it my final factor on 3 purchases....All Sigs of course. The 226, 238, and Ar516. I feel your unbiased opinion during in depth reviews provides an essential take on the common consumer. If I feel your reviews are helpful to me, I know they are helping new buyers even more so.
I feel the same about my Sig P238 Two Tone. Unfortunately, I spent T$589.00, but can't believe how well it shoots and the continued reliability. Great gun...
I love the Walther but the Sig P238 is a great pistol too. If I had to make a choice I think I would still choose the Walther but I wish I could own both honestly.
I use your reviews alot to make my decisions. I'm in the market for my first ccw. So far you have done reviews on 2 of my top choices: the Kel Tec PF-9 and the Sig P238. I'd appreciate it if you could do one on my other choice: Springfield XD 9mm 3" Sub-Compact. I know your a busy man but it would be awesome if I had another reference. I've narrowed it down to these three from firing many pistols (I've put about 300-400 rounds through each of these). help me out?
Ive heard a rumor that after about 1000 rds or so, the spring in the p238 gets a little weak and may need to be replaced. Does anyone have any info or comments about that?
@bigmlt3 I heard the same thing about the spring. Sig sells them in a 3 pack for pretty cheap, so I ordered a set just in case. I only have about 500 rounds through mine so far with no spring issues yet. They did change from a round spring to a flat one as well.
Sub 2" groups with the ppk at 25 yards you say (05:57)? Yea, i heard you right. Your a liar or an idiot who gets confused with the different lengths of measurement. But maybe I'm missing something here? So i'll quote you stating "by the way 25 yards is hard to hit your target" during a P226 vid of yours. 226 v.s. ppk??? So sir...Are you a liar, or an idiot?
@Countavery YOu are comparing two different types of shooting, different contexts, he is talking about off a rest with the ppk and the sig he is talking about offhand.
I can see that side of it, and I haven't any problem with somebody using one if they like; in any case, my laser didn't come sighted, and I don't care to blow a box of ammo to do it myself. I doubt I'll ever be in a position where I really need it. This one is invisible at dusk at 25 yards, but if I can still see the target, I think I can probably make the shot. Maybe a stronger laser would make it more desirable, too. But I just don't feel I need it, as comfortable as I am with the gun as-is.
Colt has brought back the Mustang in a new improved version. The original had a cast frame and slide. The new Mustang is milled from bar stock. Much better fit and finish. Check it out.
But this gun shoots so accurately that, in a serious encounter at close range, which is likely to present itself without warning, the laser is one more step to remember, and therefore a potential liability. On the other hand, the laser could prove useful in certain situations - a would-be assaulter may chicken out, seeing a red laser-dot homed in on his torso; but I have never used the laser, and I'd never recommend using it to intimidate. It might be a fun toy, but it is impractical for EDC.
@kludgeon not with one of the good lasers, where it comes on as instinctively as grabbing the handgun.
It is also very useful during nightime scenarios, and when clear sight picture is not available. its alot easier to put the laser on the target than align the sights then put them on the target, and fire.
It occurs to me today to add that I paid $700+ for my P238, which is the two-toned version mentioned in the video (if memory serves). I like the grips; they are slimmer, more streamlined, less blocky than the model shown here, and the gun fits very well in my smaller hands, but more notable is the texture of the grips, which is a sort of sharp, "stippled" effect, lending traction to slick palms. My P238 also came with a Crimson Trace trigger guard laser; hence, the higher price.
After learning to handle it, learning to care for it, and learning to shoot it well, I think buying this gun was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. 1,500 rounds through it and never a jam or misfire, or a malfunction of any kind. The only thing I would say against it is that it is pricey. A magazine costs $40, and it only comes with one.. For the price tag, an extra mag would have been a nice throw-in.
This was just my 2nd handgun, and I was not prepared for it. My 1st was a *very* used Nagant1895 7-shot revolver.. an easy analogy is this: say you've driven your car a lot, you learned on it and you're comfortable in it, but it's an automatic - then you plop yourself down in a manual transmission vehicle. You can't drive it. Now, in fairness, this gun was supposed to be a gift to my Dad, but arthritis made it too difficult to handle reliably. So I got him a .38Spl and kept the Sig for myself.
I have the Sig 238 and love it. Great shooting gun, easy to break down and clean and deadly accurate. I had a P3AT and hated it. Snappy in the hand and felt like junk even though it always worked. This gun feels and looks like a gun. Couldn't be happier. I have the Sig232 as well but this 238 has quickly taken its place on my side.
I just bought a Sig P238 and shot it today. Everything Nutnfancy said in this review is right on. It is a fantastic gun that blows away the P3AT, LCP and Bodyguard.
Nutnfancy, you know Colt has brought back the Mustang, right? It'll be in production again soon.
BTW, if you were a salesman evaluating what kind of shooter I am, prior to sale, I'd probably have to respond, "shut up, and sell it to me." haha. (all in fun).
I just picked up a P238 with Laser on sale for $499 at Sportsmans Warehouse. That is $200 off "normal". Pretty good deal considering it comes with a $100+ Sig Sauer laser. I wish these things came with 2 mags though.
Anyone have to push the extended mag very firmly to get it to latch? I have the "Extreme" version if that makes any difference. I thought it might loosen up over time but it still takes more than expected effort to get the mag into the gun.
I'm wanting one of these. Especially with the new dark-earth and desert-tan versions set to come out shortly. Hadn't planned on buying a pistol smaller than a 9mm (can't wait for a look at the P938 by the way), but I'm digging this for it's size. Question for you...does the P238 fit in your Galco Classic Lite holster? Galco doesn't list the P238 as an option for that holster but wondered if it fit your Kel Tec Pf9 holster? Thanks, and can't wait for a review of the P938 as a 9mm Pf9 competitor.
Man, I don't know why I haven't come across your reviews before now. Top notch! Literally had me laughing out loud a couple of times. Obviously you're well studied and it really comes across in the videos. Thanks for taking the time for the noobs like myself! Much appreciated.
I just got one of these beauties. My first gun was the Glock 9mm sub compact but too bulky to really carry. Then I started shooting the Walther PPK 380 and fell in love with it. But now my Sig 380 w/laser is my favorite, however I'm having trouble finding a holster that fits good with the laser on it. Any suggestions?
@am64135 i got my Sig P238 today at academy for $449 and after tax $480 out the door, nutnfancy said that it came with a 6rd mag but mine came with a 7rd mag with mag extention for your pinky finger. but it did have only one mag
I gotta say mr.fancy, I just got myself a walther pk 380 for my backup while on duty, when im off duty I just might make it my primary carry. i love it! I have always swore by a .45 being the only gun I will ever carry but after getting this thing I think my kimber may get some time in the safe.
Just got the Nitron finish. It's awfully handsome, but the stock magazine would not lock the slide back on empty. Switched out for Colt Mustang mags. They're tight to seat, but feed reliably enough and always lock the slide back. I'm definitely keeping it, but why so many problems with this gun?!
One of the finest .380s I've ever owned or shot. After a some trigger work, It's slicker owl Sh#t. The gun is fine as it comes from the factory and apparently sig has resolved any issues they had with the first release. With a little cleaning and polishing in the internals, safety, trigger, mine runs like a champ. Very slim and comfortable. Accurate to boot. The only thing I would ask from Sig would be to improve slide to frame fit and add an aluminum trigger and stainless or aluminum MSH. NICE
Just purchsed my P238 Equinox and brought it to the range this weekend...... excellent pistol as I shot 100 break-in rounds without and jams of misfires... Handles recoil excellently and the tritium sights on the Equinox are a major plus!
Nutn' thanks for the great review. I purchased a P238 "Rainbow Titanium" a few weeks ago. What a great little gun! A lot of complaints about jamming. I don;t know if that was with earlier models or not. Mine was manufactured June 2011, and it's fed everything I've put through it so far, including the Blazer. The Kal-Tech looks nice too but we can't buy them here in Mass thanks to our dip shit AG. I almost bought the Bodyguard till I saw your review. Thanks again, you were spot on: great gun!
Nutn - Kudos for stressing the manual of arms and training for the P238. My comments should not be construed as criticism of your reviews, which are excellent.
As a postscript to my last comment: The weight and price of the P238 pushes it up into a different arena where the customer really should start comparing it to compact 9mm pistols or compact 38 special revolvers. The 380 acp round is a big compromise to get a bantam weight, super compact weapon.
The design rationale behind the SIG P238 just mystifies me.
I don't understand the hype around this pistol. The P238 is not suitable for a left-hand shooter. It's heavy enough to be classed out of the sub-compact category. With all the good lightweight DAO pistols on the market, why would anyone pay this much to have to release a manual safety under duress? The "muscle memory" argument is a poor defense. Most P238 owners will not practice frequently enough and not under the right conditions to ever be effective and safe with this pistol.
@GilligansIsle1 Gilligan, I own this gun and I can tell you your critisism is a little off base. This gun fits easily in my front pocket with a DeSantis pocket holster and I don't think it weighs much more than my iPhone. I had a Star .380 which I hated. This gun is fun to shoot and I bring it with me to the range all the time. The controls, including the thumb safety are identical to the 1911 which is the most popular gun design ever. The thumb safety is a non issue. It's a great little gun!
Dude you make some of the best and most detailed comparable gun videos on youtube after watching your video on the P238 I had to go get me one and they are absolutely worth every dime super nice gun keep up the good videos!!!!
Lefties... let me know what your options are in the ergos of this gun. I know that there are ambi safety options but I would never pay $200. Let me know how you carry and how you release the safety. Thanks
Great review! When you commented on placing your finger on the trigger guard when firing increases your accuracy, I found this to be true for my own style of shooting as well! My groups have shrunk considerably giving me better stability and a more positive grip on my firearms.
I am very interested in getting one of these pistols....and it feels so good to find a nutn review on something that I am interested in..... thanks dude.
Hey nutnfancy, im looking at getting a p238 for my off duty carry weapon. Did you have and reliability issue OTB? I've heard several times that they have, and if you did, how did you fix it? Thanks, ER
i got one after this video.Nutnfancy is right about the wieght everyone else thinks it wieghs 15.2 unloaded but that is actually the loaded wieght. great vids tnp is the best
I thought I was wanting the new smith bodyguard, but after looking at these I think I'm going to get my wife a P238 Lady and me the Copperhead, have you seen those? WOW!! Great vid Nutn!! How's Allie by the way?
@efd5803 I went through the same thought process, was eventually turned off by all of the issues (take-down pin, laser buttons) that the Bodyguard was having and picked up a P238 Gambler. Some isolated (about 2/100 rounds) issues with magtech ammo. Beyond that, perfect across the board, you won't be disappointed.
Also if you're bumbed about the laser Crimson Trace now makes a trigger guard model with instinctive activation for the P238.
@efd5803 Also if you're looking for a good pocket holster, I use the Daltechforce PP2. Affordable, quality leather holster made in the USA. Sootch00 did a nice review.
i am a concealed license holder in TX and i carry a sig 238 in a new specific sig pocket holster every day. I have shot over 500 rounds through it and have had no problems whatsoever even with old B&K ammo. I did add a set of VZ gatorback grips that made a huge improvement in my bigger hands. I own several other guns including glocks, walters, H&K, FN, STI, just to name a few but living in south Texas wearing shorts and a t-shirt 90% of the time, the sig 238 is by far the gun I carry most
I have to say that I really love my p238. I had bad experience with the diamondback 380 and replaced it with this sig. I will never look back. Never had any problems like failure to feed and failure to extract like I did with the diamondback. Much more pleasant to shoot. Make sure to get the generation 3 mag.
Great Points Nuttn about obligation to carry.. and of course even if it sounds a bit silly they more You LIKE a gun..[even if its just for its looks]..the more likely You are to carry it...
i think this sig is an outstanding choice for an everyday carry gun....and i Love the 1911 style action.
My husband just bought this for me for our anniversary! Its very comfortable for the ladies for IWB carry. Shoots great, not as much recoil as my S&W 38 special. I was talking to my husband about getting a .22 and he insisted on a larger caliber. I fell in love with this one the first time I racked the slide....GREAT gun!
@andrademeza....I got news for you. IT IS APPROVED!!!!!!! My fellow californian this is groundbreaking. I have been wanting this gun just as bad as you have. Check the DOJ gun roster. Approved baby!!
so i go to the gun store today just to look around and fill out some needed paperwork for another piece i have coming in and wifey looks for her. I show her the kel tecs , the rugers, but nooooo she wants the $600 sig and will accept NOTHING else. could be worse , she could want jewelry.
love the reviews nutin! glad allie's doin better. thinkin bout trading in the kimber ultra carry for the 238! your right about lugin the extra weight around!
lol the wife was looking for a new ccw opt. AND SHE CRACKED UP AT 31.55 if you can handle thicker and longer LOL WE all had a real good laugh. Sorry for going dirty me and the miss have dirty minds lol great review tho i really like the sigs
Great review! You touched on price, but I noticed your review was in 2009... Now (in 2011) the price has gone way up. The list is 679.00 (for night sights) and I got mine for 540.00. I'm a 1911 guy though and I love this gun, so it's worth the higher price. I was hitting bullseyes at the range today at 10 yards. I never could do that with a KelTec 3AT.
I bought mine today and fired 100 rounds through it and loved it. It did jam once but i only load 2 bullets in magazine. after the 1st fired it jammed, otherwise no other problems.
I looked at one this afternoon and decided to buy one after your video confirmed my own observations about this little beauty. I plan on carrying it off-duty because it has the same manual of arms as my duty 1911 (Kimber TLE/RL II). For years, I carried a J-frame snubby and even a Glock 36 off duty, but sometimes the situation calls for something smaller and lighter. This guns fills two roles for me: a magazine semi auto and a ultra subcompact pistol. Thanks for another great video.
Just got mine. Haven't had a chance to fire it, but I gotta say, the fit and finish are perfect! Really well made little piece. The Siglite tritium sights are great, allowing for fast target acquisition, especially in darkness. I can't imagine using a gun with regular sights at night after seeing how well the tritium works. The plastic holster that comes with it is fine. I'm left handed, and it's a right handed holster, but I can easily flip it around since I plan on carrying inside the pants.
Mine went back to Sig after 300 rnds. I had FTF issues with Federal HP and casings ejected at my torso. They determined there was frame damage at the trigger pivot and a replacement is on a plane right now.
Woolfe Gunleather makes great leather holsters. Just tell him if you carry cocked and locked or hammer down. The holster is customized. Same for laser guard.
Just bought the Gambler edition to match my forthcoming CCP. Put it in my pants pocket (not in public of course) in a Daltechforce Pistol Packer PP2 (see sootch00's review) holster and ran around in circles for a little bit, carries beautifully. Barely noticed it in the right front pocket. Tritium sights are perfect as well.
Shot 100 rounds of Winchester White Box FMJ, 3 failures to go into battery, but can attribute that to break-in, cheap ammo and lack of lube. Extremely satisfied.
After having the Walther ppks (s&w version), the Ruger LCP, and the Khar P380, I had to rent the Sig P238 at my local gun range. The Sig put the others to shame. I've had nothing but problems with the Walther (back to the factory twice, and still a piece of junk). A the next gun show, it was good buy to Walther, Ruger and Khar and hello Sig P238 HD. New itb for 200.00 less than msrp. After selling the others, I came out out of it OK. I can trust my life with the P238. Nice companion to my P229.
I am happy with my Kahr P380's: accuracy, carry-ability, shooting feel, and looks. I like a 1911 style single action triger better. I shot a freinds Ruger 380 and the Kahr is worlds better. I wish the bottom part of my slide had more steel not just polymer. Looks like the Sig is the same way.
Freakin awesome video as per usual. I'm considering getting a P238 and replacing my P239 with it. It's very light and comfortable even more so compared to my 239 and my 239 doesn't come with night sights from the factory!
I would love to see this Sig around a similar size and weight in at least a 9mm. I know they have a new 9mm (I think it's the 290) but it's to bulky for concealed carry. I would love to carry a 1911 45acp but it's to much weight. and harder to conceal.
Thank you for the honest frankness toward your inexperienced viewers. I've decided not to get this gun as my first daily carry, but I will definitely keep it in mind as I get more hands on experience with firearms. Keep up the good work!
I bought the stainless version with plastic grips, and will shoot it at the range Friday.
It will be interesting to compare it to the Colt Government .380 which I like. I'm going to get the CZ 83 because I like CZ guns. I'm a 1911 shooter and like the .380 for a grab and carry.
how many rounds do u think this gun can last. ive put a litle over a 1000 rounds thru mine and i dont feel that confident in it for some reason. i shoot it that much cause its a easy shooter.
mine had issues from the start, then i sent it back , within 10 business days had it back and has worked flawless ever since, its a high quality sig unlike the 250's now i carry it all the time 400 rounds in,
Great info, Nutn, as usual...I just recommended this gun to a friend who was recently broken into while at home during the day! I'm hoping she'll take my advice and your recommendation for this Sig. I bought the LCP last year as my CC choice and have had a few loading/ejecting issues with it. Love the size but reliability is iffy...I'm hoping the Sig will knock the LCP in the dirt. Take care and thanks always for your service to our country.
Yes, the metal at the lip of the chamber has chipped from shooting hollow point ammo. It does better with ball end ammo, but then it's not really doing the job I need it to do. The sights on the Sig are much better, too! I love the size and weight of the LCP but the Sig just blows it away in quality and features. I love having the thumb safety on the Sig with a much shorter and more sensitive trigger...not faulting the Ruger because it's meant to have a long pull.
Great Video Nutnfancy, I bought one of these 2 months ago and I will say it is a great concealed carry firearm and a secondary weapon for a LEO. I prefer to carry my full size p229 .357 but when im just running up the street to the store or the car wash, this is a great firearm to throw in your waistband or even in your pocket. Like Nutnfancy said it is expensive for a .380, but the quality you get is worth every penny. Thanks Nutnfancy for the videos, Keep them coming please!!!!
@Rustystud .45acp FMJ has a decent chance to skip off the thick bones of the forehead and chin. Several documented incidents that were studied in detail back in the 70's-80's. JHP's will fix that issue with almost any round.
Good review, but I'm against using "Firepower" to refer to magazine capacity. Firepower should refer to caliber and how much energy and size a cartridge has in a given firearm, not how many of them you can fit.
Hello MR NUTN a 1911 is now a days 100 year old design and it is still in use with LEO and CIVILIANS so what are you talking about weight and firepower.
@giguchan I will never own another sig again.. why buy something just for the name? the weapon is over priced, does not come with a second mag and is not realiable! I suggest if you want a high end peice of jewlery you go out and buy the Kahr p380, its lighter, smaller and are avalible with night sights and around the same price but a hell of alot more realiable!
@FocusRacer9 Here here Focusracer! I just got mine last week and Its a great little gun! It fits really nicely and the very accurate! Not only that, but it fits comfortably in the waist.
You've made me another sig fan Nutn. I just got my P238 Nitro today and boy is it comfortable! I'm in progress of getting my CPL and I can't wait to do more testing at the range! One of the best .380's out there (despite some negitive reviews) I believe I made the right choice for my back up .380. Thanks again for th e helpful advice and reviews of all your gear Nutnfancy!
well thatnks for the info i am a 1911 shooter and i loke how they run! i have been carrying a SW j frame air light but i want a semi auto!! and i think i have found it thanks for the detailed review!!

Anyway, unless I'm nekkid, I'm wearing this gun.

Nice video!

NICE

Nutn' thanks for the great review. I purchased a P238 "Rainbow Titanium" a few weeks ago. What a great little gun! A lot of complaints about jamming. flyingrv6 6 months ago
Nutn - Kudos for stressing the manual of arms and training for the P238. My comments should not be construed as criticism of your reviews, which are excellent.
GilligansIsle1 6 months ago
As a postscript to my last comment: The weight and price of the P238 pushes it up into a different arena where the customer really should start comparing it to compact 9mm pistols or compact 38 special revolvers. The 380 acp round is a big compromise to get a bantam weight, super compact weapon.
The design rationale behind the SIG P238 just mystifies me.
GilligansIsle1 6 months ago
I don't understand the hype around this pistol. The P238 is not suitable for a left-hand shooter. It's heavy enough to be classed out of the sub-compact category. With all the good lightweight DAO pistols on the market, why would anyone pay this much to have to release a manual safety under duress? The "muscle memory" argument is a poor defense. Most P238 owners will not practice frequently enough and not under the right conditions to ever be effective and safe with this pistol.
GilligansIsle1 6 months ago
@GilligansIsle1 Gilligan, I own this gun and I can tell you your critisism is a little off base. This gun fits easily in my front pocket with a DeSantis pocket holster and I don't think it weighs much more than my iPhone. I had a Star .380 which I hated. This gun is fun to shoot and I bring it with me to the range all the time. The controls, including the thumb safety are identical to the 1911 which is the most popular gun design ever. The thumb safety is a non issue. It's a great little gun!

Also if you're bumbed about the laser Crimson Trace now makes a trigger guard model with instinctive activation for the P238.

i am a concealed license holder in TX and i carry a sig 238 in a new specific sig pocket holster every day.

I would love to see this Sig around a similar size and weight in at least a 9mm. I know they have a new 9mm (I think it's the 290) but it's to bulky for concealed carry. I would love to carry a 1911 45acp but it's to much weight. and harder to conceal.

@mikemorrison281 Did you break the LCP in?
Kylef7735 11 months ago
@Kylef7735
