I'm down in Australia..just turned 60 but clearly remember the cartoon and most of the theme song..incl Felix the Cat..tears of nostalgia and a big sigh too... :)
oh my God ! I haven't heard this for 50 years ! This and Felix the Cat were my favourite cartoons when I was a preschooler. The memory was so fresh and powerful that, out iof the blue, I burst into tears ! Weird !
Does anyone remember Tom's spout going "hat-boom" when he got an idea? I remember it making a sound that sounded like that but thought I remembered it being spelled out as well.
Dear Miss MinnieMouseGirl,Prior to his death Mr.Lionel Wilson(Who did the voices for "The Tom Terrific"TV Cartoons)worte his memoirs..I don't know if the book has been published? Hopefully..though..it has been published.
One of the '' NEW '' cartoons made for tv . We had Loony toons, and Popeye cartoons in the 1950's , but a few new cartoons came out, the very start of ''made for tv only cartoons, Crusader Rabbit , Colonel Bleep , Spunky and Tadpole , Ruff and Reddy , Felix the cat , Dodo , Bullwinkle , Huckleberry hound , Pixie & Dixie , Augie Doggie, and others ,
@tomandsuehunter1 I remember watching Tom in the mid '60s, but then the cartoons might have been made back in the '50s and I was just watching reruns at that time.
WoW Tom Terrific!!! and Captain Kangaroo, what childhood memories sitting in front of an old zenith black & white vaccum tube television. Simple and to the point cartoon.
I loved Captain Kangaroo. I used to watch him when my mom went to work and I was alone in the apartment. I was 9. Later on in life I had a pure bred Yorkshire Terrier whose official name was Tom Terrific.
Good Lord.......I remember this also....and I'm three times 21......for those of you who, like m, graduated from the NYC school system, it could be a chore.
Seriously, to be that young and in front of the TV for just one hour would be a treat. My parents alive, my world in that tv set and such great shows........I wouldn;t choose to be a kid these days. Miley Sirus?? Yuk!!
They were still showing this on "Captain Kangaroo" into the mid-'60s even though they only did two seasons worth of stuff. I once lived in Tom Terrific's home town of Holyoke MA. (Don't visit - it's not worth the effort; most of the town is a run-down ghetto. The only thing viable is their huge Ingleside shopping mall and the more wealthy side of town on Route 5. The rest of Holyoke is all 'Hood.)
Boy, when I see this I think how I would give anything to have just one hour back, and be four or five years old, sitting on the carpet in front of that old tv, watching Captain Kangaroo. But this is the next best thing. Thanks, Youtube!
This was created by Gene Deitch as a weekly serial (each story unfolding in five parts) for "CAPTAIN KANGAROO" in 1957. Only two seasons' worth were produced.
Lionel Wilson, best known as the voice of "Tom Terrific" recently passed away at the age of 79. He died of pneumonia in New York on April 30th 2003. More recently, he was the voice of Eustace Bagg on "Courage the Cowardly Dog."
yes when i strech my imagination all the way back to almost the very beginning i do recall Tom Terrific perhaps shte very frist tv i ever saw was this!
now when was int 1956 something like that i think i was all of four at the time!
ah what i would not give to go back there just once more!

There were alternate lyrics as well:
"...If you see a rocket blast
A sailing ship from sailing past.
A little flea--a golden key: It's me!
When there is trouble I'm there on the double.
T-E-R-R-if-ic. My name's Tom Terrific"
Not bad recall for something from 52 years ago.... :) And I LOVED the sound effects of his "thinking cap" but could never duplicate them

I found this information from ToonTracker:
Lionel Wilson, best known as the voice of "Tom Terrific" recently passed away at the age of 79. He died of pneumonia in New York on April 30th 2003. More recently, he was the voice of Eustace Bagg on "Courage the Cowardly Dog."
Another talented actor gone.
