Setting aside all personal beliefs and just putting this into the form of what should be basic Christian doctrine, contextually you could see "worthless" as "false". God wants no other being but Himself worshiped because He knows He is the only one. That's what that means. Crosses and the like are more of a form of Christian propaganda. They aren't idols. The people aren't worshiping them like they worshiped the golden calf in Exodus. They see them as a tie to their God and not a god itself.
