  • Just beautiful

  • Thank you for posting

    this wonderful version.

  • Perfect!

  • I grew up on Bjorling, my parents were devoted. I once heard him described as "the greatest voice ever recorded" and all these years later I couldn't agree more. My father always said he ate and drank himself to death......such an early departure. I want this at my funeral, too.

  • Sonic perfection. Yes, PERFECTION!

  • this is THE version for me

  • What a beautiful piece of music.

  • @horndiapason

    absolutely perfect!

  • why o why cant people just enjoy the wonderful voices instead of trying to find negatives thnx for posting

  • This has to be the definitive rendition of this classic aria

  • my dad loved this and wanted it played at his funeral which we obviously did - I find it difficult but moving to listen to

  • I don't understand any other what these two are singing yet I just love this duet, always have. How am I able to do this? Perhaps because I am a perfect lover of music?

  • @blackdyke1 From memory, they are reaffirming their friendship, after finding out they both love the same girl.

  • Im not a classical music fan myself but that is possibly the best song ive ever heard!

  • Impresionante Magnifico, que pena no poder haber vivido ese momento.

  • To these ears, the best version ever of this superb song!

  • @Addehiovy Then there's nothing at all wrong with your ears.

  • When I first heard it, the commentator said that Jussi was already dying of cancer and this was his last recording. My mother just died at that time, so I was totally bowled over by this and am again, every time I hear it.

  • @lavanalalala I've never read any mention of cancer, but I did read that his wife's biography of him didn't conceal a problem with acohol he had .. don't know if that caused his heart problems.

  • @Astraea52 His heart problems was the primary cause of his death. He wouldn't have made it far past 50 even without the drinking.

  • @lavanalalala I've never heard about him having cancer, but have read that his wife's biography of him mentioned a problem with alcohol. That may have been related to the heart condition, which was his official cause of death at 49.

  • @Astraea52 No cancer, and everyone dies of heart failure in the literal sense... Not to put too fine a point on it, his major problem was a vast consumption of alcohol, which was certainly instrumental in causing his early death...

  • perfect. thank you Erik Elkan for posting on facebook

  • Thank you for the upload what a Beautiful song and by two fantastic sings of our time. I was too young when these two gentleman were about but loved it. many thanks. I know my Dad would have love this as well.

  • i cry

  • extraordinario

  • Seamless, and extraordinary. The hearts of both, Merrill and Jussi B, shine right through .... as we ....and the former generation, would expect.

  • Thank you, I spoke with Dan Shea a couple of weeks ago, however I didn't know he and others post on a Yahoo/Group site. But I was invited to post on their web site. Thanks again,.

  • @Shoreseeker2 - That's great!

  • Absolutely wonderful and yes it does bring tears to the eyes.Viviennne.

  • I can only echo lwr100's comment. This is the definitive recording of this iconic piece. Glorious.

  • Great blend of two great voices.

  • absolutly awesome

  • This aria is the most guaranteed musical orgasm you can get. All the coke in Colombia cannot make your feel more exalted.

  • Bjoerling, and this Duet, never fail to bring me to tears.

    Thanks for this.

    -Bill in Canada

  • Thank you so much for this.

  • I think a lot of people cry when this duet is sung well by anybody. A masterpiece of composition, orchestration and sentiment. In a holy place, two men pledge friendship, and they're not in some damn inn..Wonderful.

  • thank you !

  • Simply the best!

  • Tears, Tears

  • splendid.superb, truly delightful ,love this song sung to perfection .

  • Truly wonderful.

  • Live Performances from 1936-1957, also he was so incredible he performaed many arias and songs many times so it allows for great compariosn, not unlike today when the Tenor sings an Aria and that performance appears on different discs CDs over and over agian-the same performance. "Pagliacci" Un nido di memorie (Prologue) Private Paraty at the home of Knud Hegrman-Lindencrone unaccompamied 9/4/1950.Otello-w/Merrill duet, not issued w/RCA Vict. Orch.

  • Bjorling recording examples: Alias Erik Odde, in Swedish 13 songs, All the recordings listed here on You Tube are in the collection plus more, Complete operas of Bjorling and also many "Not For Sale " records generally produced by a private concern. Examples: Will YOu Remember from Maaytime wiht Eleanor Steber, 12" RCA Red Seal 33 1/3, REcord of Live Performances from 1920- 1952, like La Danza, Bartlett, "A Dream", Bjorlin quartet, "Sommer Gladje" recorded in 1920 he was 9, and again in 1952.

  • Thank you, I have recordings on LP of him singing under that alias. My father had and I have extensive discography of Jussi, both commercial and "not for sale" recordings he made.

  • @Shoreseeker2 upload them please!

  • @Shoreseeker2 Very interesting! Can you mention some ex. of what you have?

  • @Shoreseeker2 - Are you aware-of the Jussi Bjorling Society, of America? It's headed-by Dan Shea, and he and others post on a Yahoo/Group site.

  • Just a note here; did you know that Jussi sang under and alias? Yes, Jussi's actual debut in the USA was 1920 while touring the USA wiht his young brothers. He sang under the alias of Erik Ode from 1932 to 1933--there was then 2 Jussi's singing. He is among the all time great singers, not just tenors.

  • @Shoreseeker2 Yes, he used this alias when he sang "popular" music ore "schlagers".

  • GREAT!!!!

  • It s Jussis open air that does it. They are both good but only one is heaven.

  • It s Jussis open air that does it. They are both good but only one is heaven.

  • @FabDN41 Why do you bother with listening to anytihing with Jussi Björling when you seem to be so negative to everything he does I don´t listen to singers iI don´t like!!

  • beautiful

  • Great singing by both.

  • I saw R. Tucker and R.Merrill in Toronto in concert at Massey Hall in the early 70's

singing PF. I do love the Caruso/Ancona....also from movie Gallipolli both versions

    show their superior art.

I remember Pavorotti, s 1st concert in Toronto at Massey Hall, hardly known then

the hall was half empty......next night every seat was occupied by our Italians !!!!!!

  • Celestial recording, gives me goosebumps everytime!

  • Heavenly. THE definitive Pearl Fishers duet.

  • No one can sing this duet like these two!!!! Hits you right in the solar plexus Bobsquins

  • Simply perfect!

  • I heard this duet on a "best of" CD glad I found them together again-Bravo bravo!!

  • sorry for the double post

  • I was privileged to see Merrill in person as Germond, in Traviata, an absolutely huge sound, gorgeous voice, and one of the few performers you could hear on the stage

  • Magnificent. Moves me to tears. This is the version that all others are measured by.

Their voices are just perfect together.

  • Like Mandysparkle, I was introdued to this when I was small (I am now 55) and I loved it so much. My mum loved Slim Whitman and Michael Holliday and I still love both. However, the feeling in this is so deep it can only be felt. thanks to my parents for giving me such a love of diverse music.,

  • I would love to know the date is was recorded (if it gives away your age I'm sorry)

My dear Dad used to sing this when I was a little girl (I am now 62) I grew up knowing all the words to all the Arias. I am so lucky to have had that wonderful musical backgroung.

  • I believe it came out around 1951. My mother loved it, too

  • This was recorded the day I was born. So as it was playing the day I came into the world, it will be playing when I leave it.

  • This is certainly ther version against which all others are measured. After all this time, I still get goosebumps. Why couldn't I have been born a tenor?

  • Beautiful! Thankyou for making me feel.

  • Thank you for uploading this, surely the most beautiful performance of a sublimely beautiful work...

  • Oh so nice. Thanks for posting.

  • So beautiful, the sound of their voices just lifts one to heaven. Thank you so much for presenting this. Just incredibly wonderful. Thank you again.

  • @Lassannn Looks like 6 now. Maybe they are just nuts?

  • Stunning. I am most grateful for the posting.

  • i heard this duet when i was a teenager and it sounded sublime it never ceases to lift my spirit, such harmony.

  • I cannot even describe ...

  • mamamia !

  • Quite simply the best Pearl Fisher's Duet ever sung; every other duet I have heard pales against this definitive version. Crystal clear, passionate and sung with such passion, power and perfection; beautiful.

  • @lwr100 Yes

  • @SheffieldBeagles I don't know who responded to your comment but it wasn't me so you can save your rant for whomever did. Secondly, you owe me and the readers of this site an apology for your misplaced judgement and language. I hope you do not treat people who you have mistakenly judged with such language. If so, you must not have any friends. Next time, make sure you have the right person before you go off on a foul language rage.

  • @Amusiclover1954 I'm sorry, for both my language AND assumption. I apologise to anybody who read my comments, offended or not. I say this with genuine sincerity. Might I add that, if you want to appear to be the bigger person, you shouldn't say such derogatory things if you wish to maintain the moral high ground.

  • I first became aware of this song from watching "Romper Stomper". It is an excellent film with an excellent sound track. Had I never seen this film, I would be unaware of this operatic masterpiece. I am absolutely oblivious as to what I have 'done wrong' (regarding the negative votes) but if someone would care to enlighten me, that would be more than appreciated. Thanks in advance....

  • I love this version, far superior to any other I've heard..

  • Sometimes, God is so pleased with his creation, he decides he wants it with him in Heaven. That is why Jussi died so young. His voice was so pure and perfect that God loved hearing it too. Now we on Earth can only listen to the recordings and sit in awe of God's creation of Jussi and be thankful that we are able to hear it after Jussi has been taken from us.

  • Bjorlings voice is so clean.I cry

  • @paullois You are right.

  • Superb singing. This music always reminds me of the film Gallipoli where it was played in a very moving scene. Being a philistine, I could never remember the title of the piece but now I have it, it will remain for ever. Simply beautiful.

  • the absolute perfection in singing of this aria , despite my preference for Lanza in most songs and arias even he could not have got anywhere near to this no matter who he sang with, thank you for posting.

  • Remarquable! Heavenly! The king of tenor the best ever so is Robert Merril.......

    Bernard J. Roux

  • Remarquable! Heavenly! The king of tenor the best ever so is Robert Merril.......

  • wtf??? how does andrea bocellis version have 3x more viewss???????

  • @delam2 Because there are a lot of stupid, tasteless, tacky people in the world is my guess.

  • Thank you for posting this wonderful piece of music. I don't understand why it brings tears but it always does.

  • THANKYOU FROM AN IRISH INSOMNIAC ....CE BELLA

  • Thank you :D

  • I like old recordings, and I think that this had ben ever better if it had crackled more:)

  • And the angels sang!

  • Much as I adore Jussi, you must listen to Alfred Deller and Robert Harwood singing "Sound the Trumpet" from Purcell`s Opera "Come Ye Sons of Art" ,then decide on the greatest duet, you may be surprised.Deller was one of the greatest voices of the 20th Century.

  • @Imhof44 not even close...sorry IMOHO

  • My favourite version of my favourite operatic piece - thank you

  • The chemistry between these two artists brings tears to my eyes.

  • Two great musicians.

    Beautiful duet.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • wow! how wonderful to listen to this again.been looking for my fav music tonight. dont understand the language but sometimes it really doesnt matter. just beautiful. many thanks.

  • i would call it hauntingly beautiful

  • I am a young tenor (17) - my singing teacher had asked me - as part of my training to listen to this duet frequently. Now I can only thank him, as I'm gunna make my debut performance (singing this duet) this summer!

  • @delam2 Smart teacher! Good for you. Have fun singing and "Toi, toi, toi." Let us know how it goes.

  • "Toi, toi toi"? German for a break leg? Haha maybe I am learning something in my german classes afterall! Danke! Will do.

  • @delam2 Basically, yes. Wishing someone luck, you lean your head over their shoulder and make 3 "spitting" sounds. Onomatopoetically, it comes out "toi, toi, toi." And to round things off "In boca lupo" (in the mouth of the wolf) and "bon chance." There, you're covered; should be a great performance.

  • @ian1856 Thanks!

  • @delam2 Good luck, though i don't envy you this is one of the best and most loved peices of music of all time

  • Still as amazingly beautiful as when I bought this asmy first Classical record at the age of 13 some 50 years ago. It has never failed to amaze me, and is still my favourite piece of music.

    Joan

  • Still as amazingly beautiful as when I bought this asmy first Classical record at the age of 13 some 50 years ago. It has never failed to amaze me, and is still my favourite piece of music.

  • It sounds like Bizet wrote this for Jussi Björling and Robert Merrill. Fabulous!

  • THe most divine recording of this wonderful aria,I never tire of listening to it which I have been doing now for around 50 years, there have been many recordings made both before and since but this is still the tops.

  • @lanzanut

I have to say that I completely agree with you (although my listening experience does not span quite so long a period) there just aren't the words to describe how beautifully this aria is sung.

  • When I go to heaven I want to be received by Jussi and Robert singing this duet. Then I shall truely be in heaven.

  • Jesus Christ, that was pretty.

  • The only thing that comes close is Enrico Caruso and Mario Ancona...you can only imagine how good those two really were as bad as the instrumentation is in the background. Their voices match so much in vibrato and color that it is outstanding. I actually think that Jussi is a better tenor (from what I can tell from old Caruso recordings which isn't fair)....but many said that Jussi's voice was not captured truely either. Both beautiful...we are lucky to have them to listen to forever.

  • Whenever I listen to Jussi, I simply forget to breathe. The beauty of his voice is overwhelming.

  • Two unique voices that came together to blend with such matchless beauty for this duet and also my other favourite male duet from Verdi's Don Carlos (Dio,che nell'alma infondere). I keep listening, but I've not yet heard either duet bettered by any two modern singers, however fine they may be as solo artists. So the challenge is still out there, lads!

  • Two great voices that sing the most beautiful duet ever writen. Only Bizet did it.

No words can describe the peni-ultimate in duet arias. Those that unerstand French have an added dimension of ecstacy in celestial beauty.

    Netanel

  • This incredible sound is - and will always be - the standard all others may strive to attain . . . it is sad to know they will not do so . . .

  • @OzJohn666 sadly, voices like this don't get any advancement in America's opera environment today.

  • Quite simply the most wonderful piece of music I have ever heard. Makes my toes curl up and the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Words defeat me. If this doesn't touch your heart, you don't have one.

  • @seychelles16 If you log on to Colraturafan you will find some beautiful videos of Jussi

  • 4 people need to be made castrato! ignorant bastards!

  • magnificent....

  • in swedish televisions program about Jussi on his 100th birthday they focused on the misery in his life.

They who made this program missed that singing was the meaning of life for Jussi, and that he has spread so much joy to the people of the world. More joy than any other swede has, including ABBA!

You small man, the one who made this program, I feel sorry for you as you don´t have the ability to appreciate this!

  • @trannel9988 Well said. How pathetic, to miss the point of the music that drove him, and his gift.

  • Whoever put these two together did music and the world a great service,Thank god it was recorded! Merrill was occasionally a bit spotty musically but put him with a singer such as Bjorling and he rises to heights he could rarely manage alone. When 2 such golden voices get together perfection is the result, and this IS perfection!

  • Eh, not gonna compare them to life today, like "These people are so amazing compared to the lifeless world of today"

    Its completely silly.

These guys are pretty amazing though.

  • Robert Merrill was one of the all time greatest baritone voices ever. And VERY handsome, too. I know he was very much appreciated at the Metropolitan

Opera, and not doubt in the halls of all great opera houses. There is nothing

I can add to those who have written about the magnicient Jussi Bjorling before. A wonder of nature. And those two voices blend exquisitely. Bellissimo.

  • Truly Beautiful-This was recordes 3rd January 1951.

  • absolutely stunning!! My dad played this today to me with Mario Lanza and Robert Merrill, but I can't find the recording of it anywhere on Youtube.

However, I love this aria anyway, so who cares!! Tears in my eyes when I listen to it.

  • Hits you right in the heart! Glorious.

  • Jussi's voice comes right down to us, through him, from the heavens.

  • Va bra! Lite som Ulf Lundell, när han är dubbel.

  • Va bra! Lite som Ulf Lundell.

  • Bjorling is fabulous and rightly renowned but Robert Merrill is one of the all-time greats and does not get the recognition I feel he deserves - this is a wonderful post and a big thank you to the poster.

  • @ams228 Robert Merrill is one of the first opera singers I remember hearing when I was a little girl. I still think he is one of the all time greats.

  • Simply perfect!!!

  • Simply perfect!!!

  • Bravo Bravo. No two singers can top that!

  • Simply unmatchable!

  • This is beautiful...deeply moving...

    Than you twilightzonewar...

  • I often wonder why I am attracted to classical music.

I know now that whenever I listen to the sublime music my soul is lifted to the stars.

    Wonderful!!

  • All very true.I too have been listening to this unbeatable rendering of "The Pearl Fishers"for over 50 years, and there has not been anyone to beat it.Just occasionaly, you hear a recording of a piece of music, which becomes "a standard"

which no one else can match.

  • I have been listening to this recording for over 50 yrs now! I could never get tired of it

  • Sometimes, when I want to demonstrate the magnificence, range of coloration, and sheer beauty of the Björling voice for the uninitiated, I juxtapose the first and last tracks of this CD, "Pearl Fishers" (track 1) and "Otello" (track 9). From sweet lyrical to gut-wrenching dramatic power, and yet always the "sound," only and forever Jussi's. (Hey, been waiting for just the right moment to use the word "juxtapose"!)

  • First time I heard this a broke out in tears. Whenever I listen to it again I still might cry but when hearing it for the first time is just breathtaking.

  • Amazing!! Makes me cry everytime I hear it!!

  • Perfect!

  • This is the ultimate operatic experience for me. The beauty of Jussi's voice is a miracle and his talent will never be equaled.

  • When I hear this I know there is a state of voice in duet that is indescribable.

  • Just perfect

  • Could anything or anyone ever sound as beautiful?

  • my uncle passsed away recently. he was a legend of d'ouy carte.

  • This is what I called PERFECTION,MAGNIFIQUE, ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE. Lovely Duet. Talented MAESTROS. Thank you for sharing it.

  • Jussi Bjorling's voice always makes me cry! Always. God bless him and give eternal peace to him. - Thanks so much for this - Blessings - Rene
