Madonna is amazing in this movie,i hate it when people critize her voice, she did the best she could, and frankly her voice is much more soothing than pati lupone or the other evita actresses,Madonna's style, good looks, charming personality and astonishing resemblace to Eva Peron, made her the ideal candidate, and for those haters that say her voice is not good, i feel so happy and relaxed when i hear her sing! Its not always the octave range that matters guys!its the personality and deliverance
I feel Madonna's too soft lol - she's too nice in this version of Eva Peron. Somehow I love the ruthless version by Patti LuPone more, but I do agree Madonna does sound amazing in this movie =)
But personally I think no one can do a better Evita than Patti.
I agree. Madonna did a really good job of softening the role of Eva Peron, but Patti was very commanding; i think the music style suits the bitchy way Patti portrayed her.
Dont get me wrong acting wise this is madonnas strongest. But the songs in Evita need a strong voice Eva is very aggressive when she sings Rainbow High and madonnas voice cant capture that. I think there was no other woman at the time that could have played this part and owned it like M. Ms Dion maybe but shes not as easy on the eyes as madonna but she would have sang the fuck out of this song
u have a good point there, i personally believe the best voice for the movie, is babra streisand, to me she has the strongest voice in all showbiz, but she looks nothing like Eva and was too old to play the part, Its very strange how uncaningly madonna looks like eva, it made the movie more realistic.
well, I feel the whole tone of the movie is slightly different than the play. The play is very powerful and dramatic, but the play is much more sinister and has alot of dark comedy. I feel they tried to tone Eva down in the movie. They wanted to show a manipulative woman, who does sometimes wicked things, but in the end, is just human. I feel they wanted to soften up the portrayal of Eva, hence, 'Another Suitcase, Another Hall' and 'You Must Love Me'...
I agree 100-percent. Madonna faltered when it came to the all important song Don't Cry for Me Argentina. She couldn't hit the high notes and that song demanded POWER.
Don't get me wrong, the first Evita I knew was, Madonna, but the movie took on a less sinister side than the play... Everyone always holds the bar to Patti Lupone's outlandishly wicked Eva and thinks thats how it should always be played, but it is all in the interpretation. The original Eva, Julie Covington sang in the similar soft and sweet side as Madonna... Who knows... I love it all.. Patti can be a bit much at times...
sorry guys i think madonna was great for this role!you have to see her performance in the film as a whole and not judge from her voice or looks only. Besides this is not a video clip...
Yes and no I mean they wouldve loved what she stood for but her dressing up was a symbol of hope. It showed someone from the slums as a member of the upper class.
I'm not really into Madonna, but I think she did alright on this song, obviously no where near as good as Paige of LuPone though. Maybe they should remake the movie with Christina Aguilera starring =) She's got some Spanish blood in her - which was what Webber wanted.
okay so I adore Patti's so much more, it's like perfect.
I'm not going to bash Madonna, because
I'm sure she gave it her best....
I just don't think she should've done the role. The key's are all changed, in some of it she sounds like she's out of breath, and that "I'm their saviah" just kills me..
Couldn't they find someone who could sing it properly? The only thing Madonna had on Evita is that she looks a bit like Eva Peron.. that's about it.
sorry guys i think madonna was great for this role!you have to see her performance in the film as a whole and not judge from her voice or looks only. Besides this is not a video clip...
i hate this version...im not listening to this version ever again... this song is supposed to be fierce..and they changed they pitch a lot if the bitch cnt hit the note ummm DONT CAST HER!! duhh Patti kicks madonnas ass any day VIVA LuPONE!!!!
im 12 and i know a good performer from crap some people are just oblivious. Patti's Evita vs Madonna's Evita is like comparing Bernadette Peters to Miley Cyrus and saying miley cyrus is better, it makes no sense..
They changed the keys in movie. It was written the way it was for a reason. Watch/listen to Patti LuPone sing this and you will see how it should be done.
Though it's strange to see the wife of a dictator being so decorated through song and motion picture, I wonder what an Imelda Marcos musical would be like, haha.
I loved Madonna's portrail of the role of Evita in the motion picture and thought her voice was amazing in the studio and she obviously put in a lot of hard work for the role - I just came back from watching the stage show and although I prefer this version I doubt Madonna could stay in tune if singing it live on stage ever night (and that's coming from a big fan)
Evita and Peron did grate for theri country, it was a magic era for Argentina, but communist and army spoilt everything. At least the legacy of General Peron would last forever.

I love this musical for the fact that many people think she's a bad person, but many others think she's a good person. The music is so amazing, and Madonna does it great :) I think an Oscar was deserved for this role.
to be honest, i read the life of eva on wikipedia but i don't find anything bad that she did! face it if ur apolitician u'll always get bad critics one way or the other
Right...Evita was shallow because she cared about the way she looked. It's not like we expect our politicians to look nice or our celebrities to dress well or anything. Evita's just a bad person because critical thought makes my head hurt.
Ultimately though, the poor people that Eva's foundation helped couldn't give a shit why Eva started the foundation. Saying or believing that a person is/was bad is your right. But Eva certainly knew how to appeal to those less fortunate for better or worse, and people were helped and made her beloved because of it. Now Adolf Hitler........he was a BAD person!!!!!!!!!
I may be crazy but mabey itd make more sense to comment on the perfromance instead of the historical person the show is based on. And Eva was no more horrible than our modern politicians.
i have been reading sll the comments for and against eva peron and what strikes me is that this is a musical - a dramatisation. read argentine history or eva peron biographies. if you hate the fascism, well ok but you can not make an informed decision based on a musical.
Ok i wonder wat the producers were thinking... casting someone with as weak but sweet voice as madonna to play Eva. They should have used patti (she moight have been too old though i dont know when the movie was made)
Well, I'll say now, they could never have used a Broadway performer for a movie role. That really very rarely happens, and for good reason. Stage performers are trained to over-act, so their emotions are clear. Movies require subtlety in facial expressions.
Patti would have never done it anyway. Watch her interview in my channel about her experience with Evita and Andrew Lloyd Webber... she will never work with ALW again. She hated Madonna because she didn't respect the original notes and keys. The producers actually wanted to cast her as the mother ("she really brightened up your out-of-town engagments" in the song "Eva Beware of the City").
My favorite song from the musical, classic rock opera hi's low's and melody's, and i have listened to many versions of the song all done in a studio version and Madonna got it off to a "T". OF course Elaine Page the original Eva was excellent and Sarah Brightman has done many Evita songs, and however superior Sarah's voice is, Maddona just has a unique recognisable quality
Ministers. At the beginning she was not taken seriously by male members of goverment. You can see their faces ;-) But later she prooved them her power and there was no discussion ever with Eva.
hello.. r u from argentina?? from where i can get the autobiography of evita?? what the new generation of argentina thinks abt her. i think she was strong woman. she was far ahead of her time.
What do you mean ahead of her time? Corruption and showing of gesture was before her time. Hitler alas failed. Moussolini was shot by his people. She was lucky to die naturally - called by God.
That is because we have the similar politicians in our countries. I did not curse her nor did her death caused by me. In fact I love her story. I wish I were as clever as her. But sorry, I cannot accept your view that she has 'vision'. Tell me are you Evita before I tell you my nationality. Hi there, are you Evita?
Who would be interested talking about Peron who was half a century ago? People want to see glamour and success but don't carry away by the nice outlook. People can be vicious. The story of Evita is not to criticize or spread hate. Some may admire her courage, strong will to live and live well. Her greed was greater just because she had guts. We should live healthy and restrain our greed. I am not Argentinian but I love the people.
All depends on what you value more. She has guts and so some would admire her. I don't. I think your seeing her as a patriot and a saviour of the poor is somewhat misled. I am sorry for causing you distress in the discussion (perhaps) but I am standing on the side of Tim Rice. I will not cling on any politician to save me. Never.
I never want to force my view on you. I think you are a nice person.
well i dnt consider her as politician.. she did so many things without any position.. she can be like any other first lady... sitting and enjoying power....
thanks a lot for ur compliment.. there is nothing personal about my comments , there are generic.. so plz dnt mind if i sound harsh at any point...
I hate to say it, but putting Madonna in this role was a mistake. Evita as a stage show has so much magic, and I feel like this movie is just a really bad 90 minute music video. Although Madonna in my opinion has talent in the field and type of music she's chosen to produce, she really misses the mark. Anyone who knows the stage version I think will agree
we know the stage version.... and we still say that Madonna is the best Evita one could see.... hahaha! who else could fabulously sing those lines but Madonna....
Exactly. Stage and film are different media. The theatralic, over-dramatic Broadway way of acting and singing seems just silly in a movie. So it was wise to cast Madonna for this role. Someone said this movie seemed like a 90 min movie clip. I agree - but a brilliantly done, with a perfect lead role.
Andrew Lloyd Webber's beautiful orchestral arrangements send chills up my spine when I hear this. Madonna's voice, unfortunately, is like a.....rather disappointing....
this songs comes across like a child in a sweet shop.but dam she did it so good. and i have to agree, madonna was an excellent choice. looked a bit alike as well...
A dazzling performance. But as Ive seen the movie about 6 times over the past decade, I obviously like Madonna, but only in this film.I admire her pop work, but not my scene
Sir Andrew chose well - Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Pryce....and all the 'extras'.Full marks to cast and crew.
I hate how Madonna doesn't have half the air support to do this song. I'm pretty sure this is way lower than it should be too. It's just boring compared to the stage versions....
Its in the same key. She just does not belt it because she can't do the Eb. She just did it the way that she could. 15 years of singing pop... It is amazing she did this. She brought much more acting too the roll of Evita than singing.
so my brother was just sittign beside me as i played this and he asked "why do people think madonna can sing?" and i couldn't agree more. listen to i'm their savior. please. it's terrible.
So, everyone said when they were making this movie that madonna just wouldn't cut it... and she didn't.. niether did Jonathan Pryce... I think the producers were totally shocked to find out Antonio Banderas could sing AND act - the only one who makes the movie worth while...
Ok, so I LOVE Madonna, but please, she may have been made too play the CHARACTER but vocally, she leaves SO much that is just not there. And calling it a TRAGIC broadway production is a most ignorant statement on your part. I think you really need too do some research and do some real listening. The broadway production made this show a legend, Madonna made this show a laugh.
i'm sorry to have to be the one to inform you that an overwhelming majority feels that the oposite of that statement is truth. so are you really trying to argue that half-assed pop head singing is better than a good old-fashioned broadway belter? are you calling patti lupone untalented? if so, i know some people who will personally form an angry mob to shoot, maime, and murder YOU.
*To ihateopression: Don't be dissing Eva Perón like that. She wasn't perfect by any means but she did do some good things for the poor and working class in Argentina.
Hey man, keep your words to yourself. No one wants to hear your nasty comments. I'm pretty sure you couldn't do any better if you spend your time writing nasty comments.
ha. i couldn't sing better than madonna? ha. i can BELT this. MANY can belt this. madonna dances better than me. i sing better than her. simple fact. conceit is one of my more dominant traits.
kind of a lame interpretation compared to the visual spectacle that is the stage show. esp in this scene so much more exctiting with the fast changes and whatnot the power in her voice and motions is also noticabely lacking. to see how it is really done find patti lupone doing this in the original b'way production on youtube! PERFECTION!!!
She sung this extremely well, although I think her voice was a better instrument BEFORE the training for this movie sterilized her singing talent. She used to take more risks, be daring, throaty, and embrace her tone before.
After Evita, she got very... "careful," with her tone - as though she was afraid that actually using it would reveal something about it the world ought not to know. That, and the sudden "Valley girl" pronunciation techniques. WTF?? This took a lot of juice away from her performances.
She became the vocalist everyone wanted to write her off as, when a careful examination of her previous works reveals that prior to this point she was never that weak, pathetic singer her critics had successfully propagated into her legacy...
Per Evita, I wasn't aware of the key changes, but as I listen to a few things... they now become apparent. Listening to the originals again, these notes do not seem to be outside of Madonna's range, rather, I think they realized she would sound warmer and more sublime in the adjusted key and went from there. For some reason, I just can't imagine some of the shrillness I've heard from the play in the film version... but I guess that's easy to say at this point. lol
I would hardly call her a vocalist though I hear she's an excellent artist. If you compare this to say, the original Elaine's version, this is pretty weak. And this does sound a little weak for a determined empowered woman. IMO.
She did a good job! The only thing I didnt like was that they transposed the song down a third so Madonna could hit the high notes (just like they did with the rest of the opera)... but still, she was great!
my sympathies

just tell me r u frm argentina???
how can u comment on her like this???
rashmi1785 4 years ago
Do I need to be a national of Argentina to comment on a person?
hkjazz1 4 years ago
no.. but why are you giving negative comments ??
i dnt think she ever did anything wrong to u or ur ancentors....
rashmi1785 4 years ago
That is because we have the similar politicians in our countries. I did not curse her nor did her death caused by me. In fact I love her story. I wish I were as clever as her. But sorry, I cannot accept your view that she has 'vision'. Tell me are you Evita before I tell you my nationality. Hi there, are you Evita?

i m not Evita.. but i m a woman. in this male dominate world, every one critize a successful and powerful woman...

I am not Argentinian but I love the people.
hkjazz1 4 years ago
whatever!!! but u started it all saying that it is gud that she was lucky to die naturally and not shot dead by own people...
"Who would be interested talking about Peron who was half a century ago?"
people in history are always remembered and discussed...
rashmi1785 4 years ago
All depends on what you value more. She has guts and so some would admire her. I don't. I think your seeing her as a patriot and a saviour of the poor is somewhat misled. I am sorry for causing you distress in the discussion (perhaps) but I am standing on the side of Tim Rice. I will not cling on any politician to save me. Never.
I never want to force my view on you. I think you are a nice person.
hkjazz1 4 years ago
well i dnt consider her as politician.. she did so many things without any position.. she can be like any other first lady... sitting and enjoying power....
thanks a lot for ur compliment.. there is nothing personal about my comments , there are generic.. so plz dnt mind if i sound harsh at any point...

That's my girl. I love this movie. I cry every time I see it.

I hate to say it, but putting Madonna in this role was a mistake. Evita as a stage show has so much magic, and I feel like this movie is just a really bad 90 minute music video. Although Madonna in my opinion has talent in the field and type of music she's chosen to produce, she really misses the mark. Anyone who knows the stage version I think will agree
devin7048 4 years ago
we know the stage version.... and we still say that Madonna is the best Evita one could see.... hahaha! who else could fabulously sing those lines but Madonna....
afficionado 4 years ago
LOL I can think of dozens of actresses who could sing those lines better, and in the original key. Hell, I can sing it better and I'm a guy lol
devin7048 4 years ago
I agree, Madonna doesn't have a powerful enough voice to do this kind of song justice.
BeeBop20 4 years ago
Exactly. Stage and film are different media. The theatralic, over-dramatic Broadway way of acting and singing seems just silly in a movie. So it was wise to cast Madonna for this role. Someone said this movie seemed like a 90 min movie clip. I agree - but a brilliantly done, with a perfect lead role.

someone needs to submit all the Evita songs on one account to make it easy...please?

She looks amazing! Such an awesome version! Madonna can pull of anything dealing with clothes. Absolutely stunning!!!

Andrew Lloyd Webber's beautiful orchestral arrangements send chills up my spine when I hear this. Madonna's voice, unfortunately, is like a.....rather disappointing....

watch her: Brigitte Heitzer.
she is the dutch Evita.
there was a show about "The search for Evita" and she just won it. she is great!
Janzah 4 years ago
I saw her, she seems enormously talented. The Dutch people seem to be enamored of her. Watch out Celine Dion!

Yeah, this is about the only way I can stand Madonna, although I like Gail Bartell's version better. I don't think you can find in Youtube, though.

this songs comes across like a child in a sweet shop.but dam she did it so good. and i have to agree, madonna was an excellent choice. looked a bit alike as well...

Madonna makes a very good Evita...
but then again, I've never seen a stage version of Evita
InsomniaCafe 4 years ago
A dazzling performance. But as Ive seen the movie about 6 times over the past decade, I obviously like Madonna, but only in this film.I admire her pop work, but not my scene
Sir Andrew chose well - Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Pryce....and all the 'extras'.Full marks to cast and crew.

I think she is doing great :)
LOve the song too, catchy

I hate how Madonna doesn't have half the air support to do this song. I'm pretty sure this is way lower than it should be too. It's just boring compared to the stage versions....
tggold 4 years ago
Its in the same key. She just does not belt it because she can't do the Eb. She just did it the way that she could. 15 years of singing pop... It is amazing she did this. She brought much more acting too the roll of Evita than singing.
highflyingadored01 4 years ago
i think its catchy, no comment on madonnas singing.
qwetyouhfk 4 years ago
Sierralucas - I agree :) I'm not a Madonna fan, and there are better singers, but I think she was perfect for this role.

this song is proof she can sing.

so my brother was just sittign beside me as i played this and he asked "why do people think madonna can sing?" and i couldn't agree more. listen to i'm their savior. please. it's terrible.

Madonna was sensational in this role which is why she won a Golden Globe for it.

wooo i love this musical
primadonna12345 4 years ago
So, everyone said when they were making this movie that madonna just wouldn't cut it... and she didn't.. niether did Jonathan Pryce... I think the producers were totally shocked to find out Antonio Banderas could sing AND act - the only one who makes the movie worth while...
garboil 4 years ago
So why did MADONNA win an Golden Globe as best actress for this movie and not Banderas.
She played this role pretty well. She was great here.
bhindex 4 years ago
She is a good singer... but She didn't have enough emotion for the character of Evita, she was too cold acting...
I mean if the people loved her so much, she had to have more emotion then Madonna portrayed her as having.
SnowQueen25 4 years ago
Ok, so I LOVE Madonna, but please, she may have been made too play the CHARACTER but vocally, she leaves SO much that is just not there. And calling it a TRAGIC broadway production is a most ignorant statement on your part. I think you really need too do some research and do some real listening. The broadway production made this show a legend, Madonna made this show a laugh.
highflyingadored01 4 years ago
Madonna made this movie a success. If it weren't for her, it would have been a flunk.
bhindex 4 years ago
Yes, she was good for the MOVIE, but for the show, and for the vocals... not so much.
highflyingadored01 4 years ago
The only thing that sounds belting is her sounding like a dog being belted and beat to death....just my opinion
scmoviefan 4 years ago
i'm sorry to have to be the one to inform you that an overwhelming majority feels that the oposite of that statement is truth. so are you really trying to argue that half-assed pop head singing is better than a good old-fashioned broadway belter? are you calling patti lupone untalented? if so, i know some people who will personally form an angry mob to shoot, maime, and murder YOU.

*To ihateopression: Don't be dissing Eva Perón like that. She wasn't perfect by any means but she did do some good things for the poor and working class in Argentina.

haha. right. right madonna. you're a real "singer". you and your fans keep on thinking that.
CaffinatedLuv 4 years ago
Hey man, keep your words to yourself. No one wants to hear your nasty comments. I'm pretty sure you couldn't do any better if you spend your time writing nasty comments.
materialgrl47 4 years ago 2
ha. i couldn't sing better than madonna? ha. i can BELT this. MANY can belt this. madonna dances better than me. i sing better than her. simple fact. conceit is one of my more dominant traits.

she was meant to play St.Eva

stijngent 4 years ago
kind of a lame interpretation compared to the visual spectacle that is the stage show. esp in this scene so much more exctiting with the fast changes and whatnot the power in her voice and motions is also noticabely lacking. to see how it is really done find patti lupone doing this in the original b'way production on youtube! PERFECTION!!!

Gatsbyesque 5 years ago
She sung this extremely well, although I think her voice was a better instrument BEFORE the training for this movie sterilized her singing talent. She used to take more risks, be daring, throaty, and embrace her tone before.
Gatsbyesque 5 years ago
After Evita, she got very... "careful," with her tone - as though she was afraid that actually using it would reveal something about it the world ought not to know. That, and the sudden "Valley girl" pronunciation techniques. WTF?? This took a lot of juice away from her performances.
Gatsbyesque 5 years ago
She became the vocalist everyone wanted to write her off as, when a careful examination of her previous works reveals that prior to this point she was never that weak, pathetic singer her critics had successfully propagated into her legacy...
Gatsbyesque 5 years ago
Per Evita, I wasn't aware of the key changes, but as I listen to a few things... they now become apparent. Listening to the originals again, these notes do not seem to be outside of Madonna's range, rather, I think they realized she would sound warmer and more sublime in the adjusted key and went from there. For some reason, I just can't imagine some of the shrillness I've heard from the play in the film version... but I guess that's easy to say at this point. lol
Gatsbyesque 5 years ago
I would hardly call her a vocalist though I hear she's an excellent artist. If you compare this to say, the original Elaine's version, this is pretty weak. And this does sound a little weak for a determined empowered woman. IMO.
asdfhuliashduflasihf 5 years ago
She did a good job! The only thing I didnt like was that they transposed the song down a third so Madonna could hit the high notes (just like they did with the rest of the opera)... but still, she was great!
