just a matter of fact, animals in african plains, go through more hardships. lions are constantly tested and confronted to defend their pride and territory. tigers are generally solitary, and thus less experienced than lions in battles. also, lions are known to take down much larger preys. experience in battle is also a major factor to be considered other than mere muscle mass.
to add on, speedy animals generally have less strength and endurance than sturdy ones. they are easier to take down

Actually I know lions kill antelope, even in a chase mode, it is possible, but it doesn't mean that a lioness can run at 60mph. When cats ambush, the prey starts from a standstill position, it takes longer time for them to reach full speed. That is also how tigers catch their prey. They accelerate faster. That is also how lionesses catch and kill cheetahs. Even more so for leopards. The stalk to the prey to about 10ft, and explore all of sudden.

Physically the muscles of lions and tigers are distributed differently. While the lions upperbody is relatively stronger compared to the tiger, the tigers hindlegs are more powerful than the lions. Standing upright the tiger has better balance than the lion, because of the added strenght in the hindlegs.
@dringles It depends on the Tiger, the Siberian Tigers are huge, I just saw a video on muscler Tigers, some are Siberian, its the worlds biggest cat I think, the muscles I saw on the arms looked huge, bigger than the lion, but Its hard to tell, even with the mane, the Lion looks really thick and high from the lower neck to the top shoulder blade.

@7redtiger Actually lions run much slower than tigers. Tigers run similar to cheetah, that hind and fore legs overlap. While lions couldn't because lions legs are weaker. @FatRedneckTerrorist You should read into Dave Salmoni who did far more Tiger documentaries than Lions. Even he said Lions would win more often than Tigers. They are far more aggressive and they have battle experience than Tigers. Plus their rib cage muscles are much larger, which means their forelimbs are very powerful. They also have the highest testosterone level of all the Big Cats.

@Naturalhit False. The aggressiveness of big cats really depends on each individuals, but tigers forelimbs and hind legs are proportionally bigger than any cats! While lions are more likely to pick a fight among domesticated big cats, initially, their strength is much weaker. Wild tigers fight very ferociously. They are not just hunters. The aggressive Bengals are not the most aggr one.

For aggression just for tigers, Sumatran>Bengal>Siberian. But for pure capability, Sumatran<Bengal<Siberian. Aggression is not enough to win a battle. The fundamental skills are critical. Search for "Amur Bengal" and compare which is more capable, and which is more aggressive.

But the lion when its trying shakes its head all over the place to evade the swipes sometimes before they even get to the head which is actually quite stunning considering it has less agility. This environment is much different then the tiger, the less retractable claws are because again its open flat land, with less trees to climb.

@Dalen77 During the day, lions leave antelops to the specialists cheetahs, and try to rob them if possible. At night, they may set up traps to catch them. They could end up catch many at a time. Setting traps is sth tigers can't do, although with night vision. This demonstrate that lions is intelligent hunter, also in may ways they lack behind many other cats. I really can't compliment their fighting skills, and physical strength. Analysis showed they are behind tigers by pretty wide margin.

That makes tigers the strongest cats, p4p. in addition to size advantage. For lions, p4p, they are behind most of them. Again, it is the natual selection in a reverse way, because they are social. Barbary lions might be a little better.

@Dalen77 To swing hard means slower movement. And many times, they swipe w/o looking at the enemy. Look like blind swipes. Tigers do this by a from high to low, pulling the head of the enemy down, very hard, so the enemy can't start biting. This can be see in one Everland video. @Dalen77 I agree with the Lion normally winning the fight based on its mentality and experience. Tigers are built to tackle large prey, and are more built up front in the fore quarter. The Lions legs/shoudlers are not as muscular as the Tigers, but the Lion has a greater chest , heart and lung girth, giving it great stamina. Stamina is more important than strength guys.

Lions are built to brawl and have long slender limbs for grappling efficiently, and heavily built chests for massive stamina. @BillD2012 Yes but the tiger would have to adapt even without the stripes, it would have to be able to have a more less bulky frame on the lower legs, less skin and fur hanging down to keep as cool as possible in the hot sun. And again the male lion is still designed to fight that is why it has the mane and is why the front legs are longer then the back.

Lions are afraid of water. Lions compared with other cats are not specially designed, other than the manes.
@BillD2012 Yes, it's usually her daughter. They are called strikers. Usually the pride of lionesses tactically manuvers hard to catch preys to the strikers. Strikers can run up to 55-60mph but at a much shorter distance than those other lionesses who run 35mph.

I have heard that the lion stands taller with higher front legs and very large scapula bones and shoulders, a larger head, Adapted for fighting other lions not adapted for running and hunting. Lions are better adapted to hunting than some may think as they have powerful shoulders and hindquarters to wrestle large prey and quick bursts of fast acceleration to catch prey within range (approx. 30m). A tiger has more overall agility, speed, power and size than a lion generally. As for fighting, the tiger probably has the advantage given these traits but lions do fight more given their social instincts.

He has said the lions always win. Clyde Beatty a famous animal trainer has said the lion was tougher, he said the lion fought like a dog, and the tiger fought defensively like a cat. Roy Horn of Siegfried and Roy said the tiger is flexible and forgets. But the lion is tough and forgets nothing.
@Dalen77 Yes, sometimes experts or people working in that field will have and express their opinion. It does not always mean to say they are 100% correct though. Some people (even experts) will be biased or wrong and may even live in a fairytale themselves. Now I'm NOT saying they are definately wrong here, but there would many experts and people who would disagree and vice versa. I can assure you that a tiger (when provoked) will fight fearsomely and relentlessly when it really has to.

@jc208132 Thanks, I did just read several pages from Clyde Beatty, and he seemed to be telling the truth, as he was being interviewed he just mentioned one of his tigers had just been killed by a lion, and that he has had a lot of trouble over the years loosing tigers. He seemed to be telling the truth, the other thing that is interesting Ive noticed is that the lion seems to have some canine attributes where as the Tiger is all cat.
@Dalen77 I can assure you that lions are killed in zoos by tigers to. It happens both ways. Lions will also kill each other and tigers will kill each other to. When people put these animals together, it is generally wrong as tigers are not social cats so will end up fighting with other cats.

just a matter of fact, animals in african plains, go through more hardships. lions are constantly tested and confronted to defend their pride and territory. tigers are generally solitary, and thus less experienced than lions in battles. also, lions are known to take down much larger preys. experience in battle is also a major factor to be considered other than mere muscle mass.
to add on, speedy animals generally have less strength and endurance than sturdy ones. they are easier to take down

Actually I know lions kill antelope, even in a chase mode, it is possible, but it doesn't mean that a lioness can run at 60mph. When cats ambush, the prey starts from a standstill position, it takes longer time for them to reach full speed. That is also how tigers catch their prey. They accelerate faster. That is also how lionesses catch and kill cheetahs. Even more so for leopards. The stalk to the prey to about 10ft, and explore all of sudden.

Physically the muscles of lions and tigers are distributed differently. While the lions upperbody is relatively stronger compared to the tiger, the tigers hindlegs are more powerful than the lions. Standing upright the tiger has better balance than the lion, because of the added strenght in the hindlegs.

@dringles Actually, the Lion has more lean mass and type II fibers that are adapted for endurance and stamina but mainly the hot African climate hence the larger heart girth and lungs. But the Tigers upperbody is bulkier, the legs are shorter and stockier and the Tiger has more muscle mass assosiated with it. Mostly all of the Tigers weight comes from its upper and lower arms which are 1/3 thicker in mass than the Lions. How ever I favour the Lion in a fight due to experience.

Not able to stand up straight, unable to jump as high as tigers. Cheetah has fast pace plus their legs stretch out very far, make it the fastest runner on the planet. Only a vertically diving falcon is faster.

The lion has more fighting experience, generally. But the Tiger is stockier and more muscular, and more visually impressive, how ever, any Felid that is solitary builds an enormous amount of mass/musculature to aid it in hunting larger Bovids. Its not entirely accurate how people compare Lions to Cheetahs and Tigers to Jaguars based on looks, build etc. Lions and Tigers are the closest relatives of the cat family and share very similar traits.

@FatRedneckTerrorist You should read into Dave Salmoni who did far more Tiger documentaries than Lions. Even he said Lions would win more often than Tigers. They are far more aggressive and they have battle experience than Tigers. Plus their rib cage muscles are much larger, which means their forelimbs are very powerful. They also have the highest testosterone level of all the Big Cats.
Lions are natures warriors. Tigers are only good hunters. They seldom fight in nature.

@Naturalhit False. The aggressiveness of big cats really depends on each individuals, but tigers forelimbs and hind legs are proportionally bigger than any cats! While lions are more likely to pick a fight among domesticated big cats, initially, their strength is much weaker. Wild tigers fight very ferociously. They are not just hunters. The aggressive Bengals are not the most aggr one.

For aggression just for tigers, Sumatran>Bengal>Siberian. But for pure capability, Sumatran<Bengal<Siberian. Aggression is not enough to win a battle. The fundamental skills are critical. Search for "Amur Bengal" and compare which is more capable, and which is more aggressive.

But the lion when its trying shakes its head all over the place to evade the swipes sometimes before they even get to the head which is actually quite stunning considering it has less agility. Lioness have a matriach which serve as their leader and its usually the fastest one in the pride. She's also known as a striker, cause she can go up to 55mph while other are at 30-35.
Anyway, Male Lions have bigger skull, larger ribcage, larger scapula, and long forelimbs.

@BillD2012 Oh my gosh how old are you, I just watched a video of a lioness run after an antelope, which can run 60 mph, the lioness caught it and tackled. This is why lions don't have the extra bulk on there lower limbs, they wouldn't be able run as fast on the open flat planes, which are like an African speed way with fastest animals. This environment is much different then the tiger, the less retractable claws are because again its open flat land, with less trees to climb.

@Dalen77 Actually I know lions kill antelope, even in a chase mode, it is possible, but it doesn't mean that a lioness can run at 60mph. When cats ambush, the prey starts from a standstill position, it takes longer time for them to reach full speed. That is also how tigers catch their prey. They accelerate faster. That is also how lionesses catch and kill cheetahs. Even more so for leopards. The stalk to the prey to about 10ft, and explore all of sudden.

@Dalen77 During the day, lions leave antelops to the specialists cheetahs, and try to rob them if possible. At night, they may set up traps to catch them. They could end up catch many at a time. Setting traps is sth tigers can't do, although with night vision. This demonstrate that lions is intelligent hunter, also in may ways they lack behind many other cats. I really can't compliment their fighting skills, and physical strength. Analysis showed they are behind tigers by pretty wide margin.

@Dalen77 As of tiger vs most of the cats, the advantage is only size. The only one I can think of is their limbs, they're proportionally stronger than any cats. That makes tigers the strongest cats, p4p. in addition to size advantage. For lions, p4p, they are behind most of them. Again, it is the natual selection in a reverse way, because they are social. Barbary lions might be a little better.
So, it is not the lions that have strong muscles. They are OK. but p4p, they are only 2/3 to tigers!

@Dalen77 To swing hard means slower movement. And many times, they swipe w/o looking at the enemy. Look like blind swipes. Tigers do this by a from high to low, pulling the head of the enemy down, very hard, so the enemy can't start biting. This can be see in one Everland video. I am not sure why you say lions always win.

@Dalen77 I agree with the Lion normally winning the fight based on its mentality and experience. Tigers are built to tackle large prey, and are more built up front in the fore quarter. The Lions legs/shoudlers are not as muscular as the Tigers, but the Lion has a greater chest , heart and lung girth, giving it great stamina. Stamina is more important than strength guys.

Tigers can't survive there because: short stamina for antelops, hard to hide for buffalo. Their stripes are designed for hiding in forests. They can't set traps being solo. They can run in forests they'd do better on plains too.
Lions adapted by being social, not quite physical in terms of muscle compared with other cats, except bigger than most of them.

The only cat that would head that way w/o intervetion is cheetah. Lions adapt well too for their habitat. The problem really when these two meet, which is stronger. Tiger needs more water, swim well. Lions are afraid of water. Lions compared with other cats are not specially designed, other than the manes.

@BillD2012 Yes, it's usually her daughter. They are called strikers. Usually the pride of lionesses tactically manuvers hard to catch preys to the strikers. Strikers can run up to 55-60mph but at a much shorter distance than those other lionesses who run 35mph.

Where as the tiger needs to jump through trees and stalk prey, by its self so it needs to be able to drag it up rivers and hills if need be. The lion still did well in this vid, and at the end you can't say the tiger would of won, because lions hate water, it was a tie they were both locked, but the tiger righted its self in the spray, because the water didn't bother it.

Lions are better adapted to hunting than some may think as they have powerful shoulders and hindquarters to wrestle large prey and quick bursts of fast acceleration to catch prey within range (approx. 30m). A tiger has more overall agility, speed, power and size than a lion generally. As for fighting, the tiger probably has the advantage given these traits but lions do fight more given their social instincts.

Some people (even experts) will be biased or wrong and may even live in a fairytale themselves. Now I'm NOT saying they are definately wrong here, but there would many experts and people who would disagree and vice versa. I can assure you that a tiger (when provoked) will fight fearsomely and relentlessly when it really has to.

@jc208132 Yeah the more I look into this the more I just don't know, its so hard to get an accurate assessment, but I am sure what Roy said of Siegfried and Roy, that the Tiger is more forgiving and more flexible, and that the lion is tough, and forgets nothing. Roy was a huge tiger fan, so what ever that's worth, maybe the lion has a more dominant nature, you do here that, and that the Tiger is more defensive, hmm, very hard to figure out.

@jc208132 Thanks, I did just read several pages from Clyde Beatty, and he seemed to be telling the truth, as he was being interviewed he just mentioned one of his tigers had just been killed by a lion, and that he has had a lot of trouble over the years loosing tigers. Tendons are more important that muscles in felines. If you look at an ordinary house cat he can jump maybe 10 times his own height, and yet he does not have any muscle in his forearms and hind legs.
