  • For a test like this he should be using a far superior company like Albion or Del Tin.

  • @iirainey

    Or a Fable Blade :-)

Probably no help to a completely unskilled user. True though, they should have had the test performed by someone who knows how to cut, and with a well made sword.

  • if that was a katana it have had cut ATW

  • @jesusgabrielterron

Not in his hands I doubt. I think the problem is the novice wielder not the sword. Though Hanweis are not known for great edge geometry on their medieval stuff. If it were a GOOD Medieval sword it would cut as well as a good Katana.

  • @jesusgabrielterron Depends on the wielder. The katana is amazing, but it's not a win-all weapon.

  • what show is this from?

  • @ewbecht

I think it's called Perfect Weapon. They compare various types of similar tools from the day to see which is 'better'. For example sword vs Axe. Mail vs Plate Armour. Flintlock vs Cannon. Flail vs Warhammer. Stuff like that. I think it was Nat Geo or Discovery?..

  • Who gives a monkey's weather it cuts all the way threw or only half the way it has the same result DEATH!

  • these guys sound like they'd love to try this on a living human.

  • oh my god, katana here katana there..." bulat" steel, sharpened in normal way would get a crap out of a man...swords are made to kill people...katana isnt sharpest sword in the world...indian "bulat" swords were nanotech sharp, those could cut better..but the technology is lost..pitty of course...

  • @zasrans - wasn't that metallurgical bulat makeup similar to that of damascus steel? both are lost technologies, and they appear similar. of course, every time an advanced civilization collapses the world loses several hundred years in technology.

  • I don't understand this obsession with chopping your enemy in half. You don't need to do that to defeat your enemy anyway it's just showing off.

  • give a armor for this pig and the pig kill you!

  • WHAT Tv show is this from

  • @FULLTHROTTLE87 "The Perfect Weapon"

  • (3) I have outcut Katanas using various blades at my dojo using the same mat targets and have argued this point with other students and teachers from various schools very succesfully the proof is in the pudding you might say an example is when I out cut a M.A.S katana that was sharp as a razor using my ArmourClass Baskethilt...If you know real swords my friends you know these names.....My friend here Conan568 knows his shit and knows that I am correct

  • (2) I mean no isult by that I do understand what some people are saying a good example is the ghurka khukri knife by its shape and geometry alone it can outcut knives and small swords much larger then itself that is true but it is not the only factors....If you are a "Actual Practioner of The Sword" you would agree with my statement not argue with it shows a lack of experience on some peoples parts....

  • (1)Give me a break with all due respect comments such as those by Ihaterobbie and so on just show lack of experience with a sword although you are correct to a point a curved blade produces an easier cut as you say by its geometry this is not the only factor when it comes to swords one must consider weight, steel type, sharpness and skill and strengh of the practioner using the actual blade to just say its science alone shows lack of knowledge

  • Very glad to see everyone here is a scientist lol but seems to have no experience in actual cutting the only advantage of the katana is the curbed blade on that I agree but what no one ever takes into account is the size of blade its weight ,edge ,steel and power of the person weilding it .cosider these facts and things are not so obvious all you mr wizards out there lol

  • ohhhh jesus christ ive practiced kenjutsu with katanas for 18 years now there fantastic cutters i own swords from a thousand to 25 thousand dollars and guess what there not the end all and be all of swords Im so sick of the anime back yard martial artists on and on about the katana a really good european style blade can cut just as well if as any other if properly sharp this sword was obviously not sharp enough

  • @Kenjutsumasters

Well seeing as this is a straight blade so the surface area of initial contact is larger, you're wrong.

I don't care how long you claim to have practiced kenjutsu or what style you do, it's simple science. Higher N/m-3 = better cut to put it simply.

I understand what you mean though, with modern steels one sword can be as sharp as the next.

  • That's only true if you're cutting a completely flat surface with parallel alignment to the edge. Which is never the case. Katana does indeed cut better as it produces a slicing motion in the cut, due to the form. There are other factors, such as longsword being longer on average and therefore tip cuts would have more velocity and cut deeper, but yes, on average a katana cuts better while longswords thrust better.

  • @Kenjutsumasters

    You are absolutely correct.

I cut through trees 1' to 2" thick with one hit from any of my hand forged camp knives.

They are forged from a simple spring steel as are many long swords and other European swords.

If it's sharp and it's moving fast it will cut whether it was made in Japan, Europe, or in my shop.

  • yeah, he also only hit with the very tip, if he cut a bit further down the blade it would have cut better.

  • That's questionable, since the tip has more momentum during a strike.

  • and it cuts its way out, the BIGGEST hindrance to a cut through something with a sword was drag on the blade surface by the medium he was cutting, thats another reason why the tip section is best for slicing, because often the tip area is thinner and more tapered GENERALLY, but theres also a greater 'surface area' of sharpened edge

  • that would kill you but...a katana woulda cut it in half all the way

  • This is a type XVIII sword - not designed primarily for slicing - it's a compromise cut and thrust sword. A type X-XII european sword would cut more like a katana, and have a better chance of going right through, like a katana.

  • o i see, my mistake :)

  • No you're right, a good katana in the right hands would chop you right in half, and so would a good type XIIa in the right hands.

This was just a very amateur display.

  • @harumba2 despite his ameturish display. he showed just how terribly powerful a sword can be.

  • @elgostine

Absolutely - gawd it's horrid what devices people have conceived to kill each other.

  • @xxwes997xx if you take a look at the Zweihander or the Light Cavalry Sabre,

or even the Grosse Messer from Germany they are all 14th century plus and they can Cut you in Half just as well as any Katana

  • @xxwes997xx lol good luck with that lol

  • @xxwes997xx Katanas were not as versatile as European swords. They were excellent cutters, but never evolved, having developed in isolation in Japan, while European swords were in continuous evolution. Overall, European swords were superior to Katanas.

  • @xxwes997xx so what? a chinese dadao could cut armor, a man, and his shield completely in half in a blow from shoulder to hip. a katana would not do that. but a dadao would not have the precision that a katana would have had. different blades are designed for different purposes.

  • @AlienZygote010 man i posted that a year ago and i have to admit i was somewhat of a noobler. My apologies.

  • @xxwes997xx nothing at all to apologize for. i was mainly posting that for people who would read comments. japanese blades were made for agility, not brute force. they are amazing at what they are meant for. just like there is no ultimate caliber for any type of firearm. they all have their own properties and purposes.

  • @AlienZygote010 well just the same, it was a foolish statement from a noobler at the time. Ive come to get annoyed as hell by posts like those so when i see where i used to be that way i like to correct it

  • We must test on pigs only because we are pigs. Awesome. But honestly, I've done as much with a pair of kitchen shears, well, one half of one at least. Thanks for the footage!

  • Very good! I would like to see the same testing done with a Bowie knife.

  • very cool having a doctor, comment on the damage.

  • Sweet.

  • wow
