  • Well it is certainly a brilliant and beautiful piece and the orchestra plays it wonderfully. But this version has significant cuts and Herbie Hancock DOES miss a lot of notes and gets out of sync with the Lang Lang or the orchestra several times. He's just playing for fun though, and nothing is wrong with that except he did mess up. That's not his "interpretation" that's simply him hitting wrong notes...and it is not just "jazzy dissonance." Still enjoyable.

  • And Check MAKOTO OZONE version. He really IMPROVISES on it incredibly !

  • Beautiful music, where on Earth did LMFAO come from?

  • FEEL S LIKE RIDING THE PLANE AGAIN...

  • A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE! SO SQUASH THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS, PLEASE! WHO AMONG US IS PERFECT IN ANYTHING WE DO! THE PERSON WHO COMMENTED, "NOT THE BEST, MISSED NOTES, OFF KEY", I DARE SAY THAT LIKELY YOU CANNOT PLAY ANYTHING LIKE THIS, SO WHY FOCUS ON MINOR FAULTS. CAN'T WE JUST FEEL THE JOY OF THIS PERFORMANCE? SHEEEEESH!!!

  • not the best... missed notes, off time, off key.

  • lol clarinet glissando is nothing compared to ricardo morales

  • A Negro and an Asian. Now THAT'S something.

  • A legend from Chicago and a young star from China playing together. What greatness comes when worlds come together.

  • bravo!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm not sure if you people realize this, but lang lang is still considered incredibly young to have achieved so much. I'm sure that by the time he reaches the same age that Mr. Hancock is at the time of the performance, you will have changed your opinion about him.

  • @300mGET These two people come from different worlds, but I still wouldn't think Lang Lang has achieved as much as Hancock did. He's still far from that. Just because a 70 year old plays with a 30 year old doesn't mean that the 30 year old has achieved as much as the 70 year old.

Do you think Lady Gaga is as good as Tony Bennett simply because they made a duet together?

  • I love Gershwin, but I don't like it being bashed out by some chnese fool.

  • Herbie Hancock is a great player in his own right, but he cannot play to Lang Lang's level.

  • @ihateuutube Lang Lang is good, be he can't improvise at Herbie Hancock's level.

You must know one is a classical pianist, the other a jazz pianist, you can't compare their level.

Maybe Oscar Peterson or Art Tatum could be the best at classical and jazz music.

  • @ihateuutube For this music, Lang Lang is more technical, but Herbie Hancock has more soul, 'cos jazz player.

Lang Lang is one of the most technical classical pianist, but Herbie Hancock is not one of the most technical jazz musician, it could be more fair if someone like Keith Jarrett, Oscar Peterson or Tatum played at his place.

  • That feeling that great, really special. I love it. Greetings from Madrid (Spain).

  • Fantastic!!

  • Did they need two pianists?

  • @moclov Isn't the point of this the interplay between the two?

  • @PatrickP17 Maybe. But couldn't they just have one guy instead?

  • @moclov now, it is for the show

  • Que Maravilha!

  • 39 dislikes :O

  • Incroyable. Fantastic ! Bravo !

  • Perfection is not perfect, remember that !!!!

    This performance is FLAWLESS :))))

    beauty, striking, drive deep...

this oneg makes my day :)

  • I think the song has some details of a American life:someone waking up,busy city life, the homeless,And building a new city.First of all,I really liked the performance!

  • Musical perfection.

  • Sweet!

  • Wow...tuba so powerful...

  • Omg...e sound produces from clarinet and trumpet is awesome!!! both e pianists are excellent too ^.^

  • Ha, you can tell Lang is having tons of fun with Herbie Hancock; when you see them playing it's like watching a really enjoyable dinner conversation.

  • ahahaha lang is seriously tweaking and hancocks just like hay

  • 7 mins only?It should be 17 mins or less if i am not mistaken-_-

  • @yourbestfrann15 mah boi...... This piece of music is what all true warriors strive for.

  • Where can I find the video for the same performance, but in the 50th Grammy Awards (2008)? Is there some copyrighted issue that won't let the video be posted on youtube?

  • Amazing!

  • My problem with this performance is the lack of heart. The mistakes are certainly annoying but would have not detracted from the whole had the interpretation been sound. However, it was not, the performance was not and, as a result, the product is second rate.

Those of you wishing to hear THE definitive recording should turn to Deutsche Gramaphon / Leonard Bernstein, probably sometime in the 80s - simply the best

  • First, there is absolutely no need for two pianists for this work. Second, it is very tacky and unprofessional for the soloists to not have the piece memorized and be reading from sheet music.

  • @bervy8 You've never even been to see a real orchestra, have you?

  • beautiful

  • That was dope !!!

  • this is one of my favorite piano pieces of all time... so i dunno about u guys... but at times... this sounded pretty bad to me personally... multiple missed notes from professionals with large orchestral accompaniment in front of hundreds of ppl... eek...but i continue to hope that this at least raises the awareness of the greatness of this piece... and that young ppl will go to a live symphonic of gershwin's music... instead of some of the music out there these days.

  • lang lang like most foreign musicians is long on technique but short on creativity. he doesn't really belong on the same stage as herbie hancock. because you don't get the same impact. and all his body language is just annoying.

  • @Chas0x01 what does it mean by foreign?

  • @Chas0x01 You be' hatin on mah boii lang lang cuz u be RRRRRRRRRRRRRRACIST.

  • @Chas0x01 I'm going to pretend to ignore that blatant racism because I take satisfaction in the fact that you'll most likely never be picked up by a real orchestra. And that's what separates you from Lang-Lang.

  • @Chas0x01 true but this was a CLASSICAL performance

  • Awesome !

  • Is it bad that this makes me shed tears of amazingness everything i hear it.

  • Brilliant

  • 3:33 my favourite part..

  • @MrMllib if u want i could giv u the notes to that little part :D

  • FAZIOLI!! magnets instead of springs :))))

  • Lang Lang wasn't born when Herbie was a really famous, big deal pianist and keyboardist in the 70's.

  • Anyone that has ever played live music will know mistakes can happen... beautiful music though..

  • hmm, anyone know who this Lang Lang is? cant find info on them

  • I have to be honest, I had to repeat the moment at 4:44 to actually notice the mistake.....im still not sure if its a mistake...the thing is going so fast that it doesnt really matter.....HERBIE IS AWESOME!!! awesome video, im still wondering why ive never been to such a concert?? :( I want to go to one! I willl.....:)

  • Herbie Hancock 4.44 shittttttt... ahahhh =)

orchestra different... pianists are playing different...

in my opinion the worst recording of the planet ......

greetings from the Repuclic of Turkey...=)))

  • @cuneyterkanol lol it was a perfect performance only that the piano player herbie hancoks is too weak

  • @cuneyterkanol well your from turkey and no one care for turkey hence no one gives a fuck about your comment or opinion jack ass fuck you

  • @MrTyman77 fuck u 2... and who the fuck you are u cocksucker...

    just talk about your own..dickhead..

and If my opinions is worhtless... why are u replying.. u brainless faggot...

    fuck off....

  • @cuneyterkanol do not pay attention to this Mr.

there seems to be indeed some mistakes

  • Very enjoyable but i too wish it hadn't been shortened

  • lang lang is clearly enjoying himself

  • Who cares about a few missed notes?? Unless you can play the piano arrangements flawlessly, you should shut up. Everyone makes mistakes here and there while playing music, whether it's a wrong note or playing mf when you should be playing mp or slurring a few notes when they have accents over them. This is a brilliant performance

  • @aschoon01 of course it is a brilliant performance for us but do you see lang lang face just turn like he is angry at herbie hancok omg

  • @aschoon01 who cares about a few missed notes? people who enjoys and respects the work of gershwin... this isn't rock music, errors are certanly not part of this piece's charm

  • @SpaceBambino I respect the work of Gershwin. Just because a few notes were missed doesn't imply these musicians have no respect for Gershwin, and it certainly doesn't mean they have more respect for rock music. So, can you play every piece of music flawlessly?? I doubt it. You should just stop typing because you're embarrassing yourself

  • @aschoon01 well, that's a rather naive and simplistic interpretation of my words. It doesnt matter in the slightest whether i can play or not this piece flawlessly as im not a professional musician, on the other hand most orchestral pieces demand to be played flawlessly, as there are musicians that do not make mistakes. and while gerswhin certainly is no stravinsky, some fundamental parts in this piece should be played the way they were written. and i didnt say a thing about HH's view on rock...

  • To those of you with negative comments, this piece is a joy to listen to. JOY JOY JOY, and they seem to enjoy playing it . Brillant indeed!!!!

  • @aschoon01 Actually, there is no such thing as playing wrong dynamics (unless the interpretation is just that bad). These idiots who say the rhythm is wrong, the notes are wrong, etc. are just idiots. They can't tell dissonance (a jazzy 7th or 9th) from a diminished chord. They are simples trolls who enjoy criticizing the unimportant aspects of a song. If you were to criticize something or someone as big as this arrangement and these fine artists, why waste your time on stupid criticism?

  • @aschoon01 nothing is wrong with criticism, just make sure your criticism has actual value and meaning.

  • John Hancock?? HERBIE Hancock.

  • the worng note is played by herbie hancock and lang lang played his 4 notes their was a gap between

  • in 4:44 there is one worng note

  • @chanlongching666 and after herbie hancock play the wrong note lang lang face look weird

  • Holy caNOLLY, that's quite a choP !

    ?8^o

  • Unfortunately a shortened version.I thought it was marvellous.

  • great orchestra! :D

  • Personally, I feel each pianist has their own style and interpretation, so to combine the piece and make a single solo into two...well, they will not match perfectly, but that doesn't mean one is better than the other...it's all a matter of personal preference. ....I am not sure why they just didn't ask one of them to perform the piece instead of trying to give each a part of the solo....

  • Oh my god! It's Tay Zonday!

  • Comment removed

  • Numb nuts, Lang Lang is doing the aggressive portion and Herbie Hancock is countering that with a softer, delicate contrast of the music at that particular moment. They are both playing off of each other. No difficulty competition here. They're just doing what they can within the boundaries of "Rhapsody in Blue." Just enjoy it.

  • Which orchestra is this? London philharmonic or something?

  • Personally I think Lang Lang is better at this sort of music, but Hancock is a wonderful pianist none the less.

  • If you like this check out Leonard Bernstein's version. Without any doubt it's the best rendition I've listened to.

  • N2RSCT1Ns: Man if you do not like it...then do not listen. No one really wants to hear your sorry opinion. My mom use to say, if you ain't got some thing nice to say then shut your mouth! Word to the wise.

  • New favorite song, ever.

  • @hogbackmtn Its called a piece.

  • They both are GREAT musicians, but I like the most the tranquility of Herbie Hancock... the way he plays just smiling, like if he didn't care about anything!

  • /watch?v=QLNCm99niDA

  • MOTHER DUCK F*CK!!!!!....Too many damn haters.

  • Lang Lang would you get out of here. Its horrible.

  • @TheCriticPiano Horrible? In what way? Be specific.

  • @Elainelps0421 Its horrible how Lang Lang is turning Gershwin's masterpiece into a.... cacophony of over-acted chords that sound HORRIBLE. That's why...why the hell is this Asian playing an emotional piece. Lang Lang is only good at technique and keeping the rhythm at fast speeds. Seriously no musicality..whatsoever!

  • @TheCriticPiano Oh, please, one's heritage does not determine how much passion one is capable of expressing, or worse yet, as you imply, whether one should be permitted to display passion at all. And since when is "Rhapsody in Blue" an "emotional" piece? That's your label - and so is the label you place upon Lang Lang. I suppose you think Yo Yo Ma has no right playing as passionately as he does - or any other Asian does, for that matter? Get over it!

  • @Elainelps0421 Have you listened to Bernstein or anyone else for that matter play this piece? They're way more controlled than he is, yet they still convey New York's industry and showbiz very well. Even my music professor agrees that Lang Lang is just a virtuoso without musicality. I still liked this however because it was a two-piano rendition featuring jazz pianist Herbie Hancock.

  • @GoTFCanada1230 lol, of course I have. In fact, Bernstein is playing it in its entirety right here on You Tube...have you checked it out? If not, you should. He was pretty calm, cool and collected, if you ask me - and he's not even Asian, lol. BTW, I'll be performing this piece four times in the month of July (violin in the orchestra, not piano solosit!).

  • @Elainelps0421 Of course I watched it. I did say he was more collected than Lang Lang right? The point is, Lang Lang is harsh, Bernstein isn't. You can still convey an emotion without having to spell it out like Lang Lang. That's why I don't like Lang Lang. He either places too much emotion or has the wrong one altogether. BTW, I'm practicing the entire 17 minutes of this piece as a piano soloist for a future concert. :) Bernstein's version isn't the complete one actually.

  • @GoTFCanada1230 Tell me abouit it...in fact, it's almost impossible to find the entire performance anywhere. Almost each performance is cut in some way...and the one I'm doing is cut, too...Good for you, re: piano. I suck at piano. I am lacking some brain cell which would allow me to get beyond Twinkle or Lightly Row on piano, but violin I can play, for some reason. I admire and am in awe of anyone who can play piano. I am inheriting my grandfather's baby grand, so maybe I'll learn :)

  • @Elainelps0421 I agree with your comments!!

  • @aviationisbest Thanks :) Appreciated :)

  • @TheCriticPiano I agree with he sucked all the jazz and blues out of this piece. He was too technical.

  • @TheCriticPiano

    that's rigth!

  • Stop dissing either of these musicians music is about being happy and enjoying wat you do and their both smiling throughout the whole thing so STFU!

  • I would fell so useless if I was playing a violin in this piece

  • Is it just me or did Hancock make some mistakes?

  • @faymye19

    so what?

  • @faymye19 its just the nature of the song raphsody in blue. it always sounds like there are mistakes but it makes the song.

  • @faymye19 "Lets see you play this song when you're in your sixties and your hands are worn from all the years of playing at a level most humans can not comprehend"!

  • This song reminds me of downtown New York or chicago, or just american industry and business. idk it makes me proud to be an american

  • @KM581 If it's not NYC's theme song it should be .Even though I hate NYC.

  • Lang Lang is probably the most overrated pianist of all time. Nothing even close to resembling virtuosity.

  • @International1ify Overrated, but he's still pretty damn good.

  • @International1ify What are you talking about? Nothing wrong with Lang Lang's playing. Be specific!

  • having played this piece myself, i see that lang is technically more at ease than hancock

  • Read what Bernstein said (back in 1955): "You can cut parts of it without affecting the whole. You can remove any of these stuck-together sections and the piece still goes on as bravely as before. It can be a five-minute piece or a twelve-minute piece. And in fact, all these things are being done to it every day. And it's still the Rhapsody in Blue." Lang & Herbie rock this performance, and I'll cut the guys slack on a flub or two; it's a tv awards show, not the Van Cliburn Competition...

  • Nobody ever said that women can't play the plug as well !

  • to be honest,i prefer Lang Lang in this role :)

  • wow..amazing.. this is America in musical form..you can just see the steel skyscrapers and locomotives...Gershwin is the man... it's cool ( and somewhat ironic) for such an American piece to be played in such a British setting ( doesn't get much more British than Royal Albert Hall)

  • agree, this is totally awesome (although i've heard better versions) but i don't quite get the irony

  • @solidorange04 so true :)

  • Comment removed

  • @solidorange04

    Someone saw Fantasia 2000

  • Awesome!

  • This is amazing!

  • To all complainers, moaners, whiners and philistines out there - IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT DON'T LISTEN

    Or do better

  • Cooooler Saal

  • исключительных

  • What fucking commerdcial bullshit crap.out of sync. and a bad arrangement.

  • ¡¡¡Qué maravilla!!!..Es una música hermosiiiiíma...Gracias por compartirla.

  • Man, this guy needs to get paid a whole lot more for the amount of practicing he puts in to keep up his virtuosity. Its not just him, but all Classical Musicians who work their ass off just practicing to be as sharp as they are..

  • The rationale of some people is beyond the scope of intelligence.

  • i still don't understand how you glissando like that on clarinet. i've tried bending pitch, but i can only go down, i cannot go up at all. i'll probably never figure it out :(

  • @crazitaco I learned on my own by watching youtube videos :) LOTS OF PRACTICE

  • @crazitaco To to a glissando on a clarinet, your fingers need to slide off the holes (forgive me for my non-technical words, I'm primarily a pianist). Your armature (sp?) should be tight starting from the low G. Imagine your fingers are tight on the holes, the slowly slide each one out as you go up the scale. At the same time, your armature should slowly loosen. The way I played this glissando was a fast, regular scale form the low G to the second C, then (continued later)

  • @crazitaco (continued now) ... then glissando for the rest of the way. I never figured out how to do a glissando from the second G to A to B to C because of the fingering, but I heard it performed as a fast scale then a gliss, and it made sense to me. Hope this helps!

Proof: I played Rhapsody in Blue on both piano and clarinet. But at the concert I just played piano, although it would have been better for me to do the beginning gliss then switch to piano, but whatever.

  • A fantastic rendition of this piece, pity there wasn't more interaction between their parts.

  • which orchestra is this?

  • fantastic!

  • Great low brass ;-) Yeah I think Lang Lang is crazy. He's a Chinese Liberace! This is great though.

  • @JolieTu1

watch out, there might be one right behind you. and there's another three in your closet, all armed to the teeth.

  • Herbie and Lang lang are so fantastic. Music is so alive and beautiful when played by them. Pay great respects to these two pianists.

  • Sometimes I think Lang Lang is crazy, but this is really good!

    So fun!

  • Sometimes I think Lang Lang is crazy, but this is really good!

  • Fantastic! I could listen to this every day!

  • I'm interested in learning that's motivated by reverence for life, that's motivated by a desire to learn skills, to learn new things that help us to better contribute to our own well-being and the well-being of others. And what fills me with great sadness is any learning that I see motivated by coercion.

  • love love love this song!! herbie does an amazing job. i'm not a huge fan of how Lang Lang interprets it :/ i feel he's too expressive with the tempo and loses the jazz feel when he has his solos.

  • George would be proud!

  • This is absolute beautiful!! And Herbie and Lang Lang playing? So Cool!! You know this was a treat!!

  • True beauty.

Really bad! that stupid person really do not understand American culture, Americans are sick of sneaky behavior. Others treat you to dinner, people you dig it, then hide in the dark laughing, really sick. More disgusting than the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

  • These comments can be quite distracting - must learn to not read them and just appreciate (or not) what I listen to. Some clips are better off without the option to speak, whether eloquently or inanely.

  • @NovaScotiaChick Well commented

  • Hip hop artist, learn to play the piano like this and I'll buy your records in a flash.

  • great,great great,the harmony between those two

  • Best rendition of Rhapsody in Blue ever... no wonder United uses it.

  • @scottj1988 It is just fantastic.

  • THIS

    is amazing.

  • hough - you fell asleep at 007 and want to brag about it?

I wouldn't be bragging about being a person with absolutely

no taste or knowledge of great music. You are clearly a cretin

who should stay in his cave.

  • Who says the Chinese has no expressions? Here is an expression maniac. But good one. Hee.. Is he wearing a false sideburn?

  • Lang Lang = Michael McEntyre's Chinese Cousin? :P

  • Look. They both had a good time. You won't hear either of them dis the other. These are two great musicians playing great music for you and I to enjoy. Just relax and enjoy it.

  • @hough515 I guess you musical horizons need to be expanded.

  • @hough515 I guess your musical horizons need to be expanded.

  • so fantastic!

it has so much energy, and it feels just like a great big sigh- a seven-minute-long, very complicated sigh about life in general!

Like Carmina Burana's "O Fortuna", but different musical style... but maybe i'm trying to link apples and oranges there :P
