We already knew this. At least those like me that played and loved JRPG's in the past had to accept that the Japanese game industry in general was struggling the entire generation. There is Tales Of Graces coming (if successful will follow up with Xillia) and the overdue Xenoblade.

I still want another Valkyrie Profile, Chrono, HD Xeno ect or a fresh new IP altogether. What are the chances they fix their JRPG machine by the time the generation ends? Possibly not likely.

Square-Enix was a bad move for gamers a good one for the corporation. Enix was the only well-known corporation to be a direct competitor of Square Co. so who gonna make Square-Enix improve their games a bit more ?!?

What about JRPG that are not from Squarenix? Demons souls & Darks souls are highly acclaimed by all the critics, dunno how they hold up sales wise, still they are good, but not meant for casuals or mainstream console audience. I guess every dev has his golden days, but now it's up to some new Japanese studios to re injected some life in JRPGs, brand new games not HD ports of great old games, rethink the whole formula and revolutionize it.

I am done with jrps on consoles. All they are these days are over hyped CGI cut scenes with retarded stories, the gameplay is completely worthless. At least with the iphone I can relive the glory days.

I think the JRPG lineup in 2012 is one of the strongest this generation. But you are absolutely right. There were VERY FEW good JRPGs for consoles. Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, and Resonance of Fate were my personal favorites (I don't count Valkyria Chronicles as an RPG). The rest were so-so. Handheld gaming was the way to go in terms of JRPGs this generation.

@BLACKB0ND Ni No Kuni is the jrpg i'm most looking forward to right now. just because square's console rpgs are bad nowadays doesn't mean jrpgs as a whole are dead. Plus Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance looks like a solid game and it's made in part by square...

I've always been a hardcore FF fan. I've played and beat them all regardless of the quality of the game but none the less I remain a serious critic. SE with their FF series have flown in a way i'm not grasping. Like they've had their odd projects now and again with Crisis Core and Dirge, along with Crystal Chronicals and Tactics Advanced, imo those games were just awfull and they need to start working with passion instead of money. I know it's been awhile and they're still workin on FFXI and XIV

I'm having a blast with Persona 4. There are still good JRPGs on handhelds, and the ones on consoles aren't all that bad either. It's not as good as it used to be, but JRPGs are still good.

JRPGs now are falling so far down the Grand Canyon, it's ridiculous. The only great ones this gen I can think of are Valkyria Chronicles, Lost Odyssey, Radiant Historia, Xenoblade, Tales of Vesperia, and Crisis Core. Not to mention there's a lot of other JRPG franchises that could have sequels. Where's Skies of Arcadia 2? Grandia 4? Panzer Dragoon Saga 2? Another Secret of Mana game?

JRPGS where awesome now the xbox crowd is around and shooters are the only thing they want to play Japanese sometimes with their franchises try to "cater to western audiences" I live in the UK and I am 20 years old and Square... you were already doing that with your awesome older titles you don't need to change because the most popular game out now is a linear scripted corridor shooter come on guys fix up!

@HeshamUchia That does not explain japanese not focusing on what westerners care about...pc/console releases. consoles are the major market for the west, pc being secondary in software, and outside of mario kart, pokemon, and the misc mario and zelda game on handhelds handhelds are the tertiary market to the west. Look at monster hunter. They bitch about it not selling, but there's no marketing behind it until it changed publisher. They won't even bring the monster hunter mmo to pc.

I'm 16 years old, and my first rpg was Final Fantasy VII back when I was in 1st grade. I can not believe I have more rpgs experience than these middle ages people. I tell people all time that Square is bullshit now, they don't care about their hardcore fans. But yet we still have dickheads, aka FF stans that don't want to hear what I'm saying. But whatever I'm sticking with the Tales series, can't wait for Tales of Graces March 13th!!!!!!

There are a ton of JRPGs and SRPGs across all of the systems. The trick is actually buying them and playing them....that's your problem. The bigger problem is unless it is an established franchise like Pokemon, FF, or DQ, even the best JRPG won't sell worth a shit anymore. Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Resonance of Fate, Eternal Sonata, Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery are all solid games, in my opinion. But Trails in the Sky and Radiant Historia were good this year.

Tales series don't come over to often from Japan.

Still as a whole there are glaring problems within this genre that either need to be changed or refined. There was a time when the best games on the market were JRPGs. Hell I'm looking at close to 50 of them on my shelf right now for PS1. But those days are over.
