I had this exact problem and managed to fix it myself. So the lens would not retract when I turned it off and LCD showed focus error once on. What I did is as I turned it off I manually twisted the lens back in and this must have reattached the motor to the moving parts as this fixed it 100%. Hope this helps!
I have a Kodak that did the same thing, I sent it in and they fixed it for free, then it did it again and they wanted me to pay. Didn't and just bought another camera. I will avoid buying a camera with a pop out lens like that again. Seems like it is bound to break eventually.
Yep, paid Fuji USA $100 plus like $20 or so for shipping and tax and handling. I didn't drop mine either, but I did have it in my pocket when carrying a cooler. It's entirely possible that I bumped it in such a way to screw things up. I kind of wish Fuji would just tell us how to fix it ourselves.
@prncssdramma Yes. I purchased the camera in 2006 and it broke in 2009. It was a pricey fix, but the F30 is really a stellar camera, and I decided that rather than spend $300-400 for a new camera, I'd rather pay to repair it. It's been in service 7 months now since being fixed, and still taking great photos.
I also cracked the LCD and replaced that for $40 off of eBay.
Had the same problem with my fd40, gave it a few blast around the lens with compressed air line and hey presto fixed
