  • Such an awesome tutorial. Is there a specific tab I could download to see the intro riff variation order easier?

  • @jtdubss nevermind. read a couple of comments. haha

  • this song is a master peace i was hesitant to play it till i seen this video. great break down. now im jamming

  • Awesome. Simply Awesome.

  • Inspiration! I don't even play, I'm actually about to start learning lead, super exited:P nice work!

    Sincerely

Fangirling tool, systemofadown, metallica, Manson, etc .... :)

  • @ilyfriendsnfamily Thanks! Best of luck with your new learning. I'm here if you need help :)

  • Grear video, very useful. Thank a lot!

  • I dont even play guitar and these videos are awesome. Just another toolhead i guess. Somehow found them helpful even though i play the drums. keep up the good work.

  • @kadials Awesome, thanks!!

  • Bloody epic video - I love it!

  • dude your awesome ty

  • Man - you are a God...SO useful. One of the very best lessons I've seen on YouTube. Great playing. Thanks +++ for taking the time to do this for all us Tool fans.

    Cheers,

    Steve

  • Isn't Jambi mostly in 5/4 as well?

  • @stfuNsmokethis 6/4 and 9/8

  • Great tutorial! Keep the TOOL lessons coming, they are so helpful, thanks so much!

  • Can't find the tabs.

  • @clmt71 It's on my site. Once you log in a link will appear in the video description.

  • @axeofcreation Thanks! Great lessons! Some older Tool would be Awesome!

  • Hey thank you so much for these wonderful lessons! I noticed you seem to be focusing more on the "newer" Tool songs. Would it be possible for you to give a lesson on a couple older tracks? Maybe Hooker with a penis or even triad. Thanks in advance and Keep up the good work

  • @tylerknackers Lateralus and Anemia and in que. I will be offering online classes teaching Tool songs if your interested.

  • Thank you - Huge help!

  • watched, learned, so much love.

  • Excellent video, thanks! You really helped me out with the timing of the second part of the chorus, saying it's in 4/4 with the progression on the upbeat. Couldn't figure it out and thus couldn't 'feel' it. But now I do!

  • @svyatagor Thank you!

  • Where can I find the tabs?

  • @bigtimer794 On my site.

  • @bigtimer794 nice lesson dude, the audio isn't quite synced up though. What's your web site?

  • Absolutely loved the depth and details of the lesson!!!...all your lessons are absolutely amazing as a matter of fact!!..keep up the good work!!...

On a different note...I know it's too much to ask but, could you do a lesson on Lateralus explaining the Time signature changes with respect to the Fibonacci. Thanks once again.

  • @hellfireshell Thanks! I'm pretty sure theres a video floating around that shows. It's just the vocals (1 1 2 3 5 8 13) I believe.

  • @axeofcreation : Ohh..I've seen that video and I was under the impression that even the opening riff has time signature changes related to the Fibonacci sequence which I didn't understand....but thanks anyway..:)

  • @hellfireshell The opening (heavy riff) is in 9-8-7...if you didn't know...np!

  • @axeofcreation Hi! It's still related : signature is 9/8, 8/8, 7/8, the denominator 8 is a Fibonacci number as well as the concatenation of the numerators, that is, 987. Pretty good, I must say!

  • Great lesson man!!!Loved it!!

  • @axeofcreation How does that Agile play? I've wanted to get one but I have read a lot of bad reviews on them. In your opinion, how's the feel, sound, quality and does it stay in tune?

  • @NotoriusWhitey It plays and sound pretty good. For it's price range it's an excellent replica.

  • Fair enough. I wasn't actually disputing the content of your lesson, just pointing out that there are instances where there IS a single correct fingering. I come from a background in classical music, so I had the "one true fingering" Idea drilled into me. also, classical instruments tend to be a lot more standardized in their setup and technique, even though the tone may vary wildly from instrument to instrument. you don't see people drop tuning their violins and cellos too often.

  • Excelent Lesson! :D Thanks!

  • @rlxarg Gracias!

  • Sorry to be that guy, but not all Tool songs are in drop D. Granted, 99% of them are, but Prison Sex and Parabol/Parabola are in BADGBE and BEDGBE tuning respectively. Love your lessons, though.

  • @MunterE Yes.... Thank you!!

  • I like this video

  • Do you think we can maybe learn some Opeth or Soilwork? Thanks again, I learn a lot from all your videos.

  • GOD-FUCKING AWESOME

You nailed it.. i'm going to present this guide to anyone who wants to know about Tool.

  • excellent teaching bro - big ups, thanks! subscribed

  • Any tips to improve my palm muting? I'm having a lot of trouble getting those to come out nicely.

  • @iifurioii Tough to say without seeing your technique. Practice some "bouncing" type riffs where you are constantly switching between muted and open notes.

  • @axeofcreation Much appreciated.

  • Didn't know Zach Braff liked Tool so much

  • That is one sexy guitar :D What is it please?

  • Thanks a lot Dude, this helped me out with the intro!

  • @GohomeMr Your welcome!

  • wow god damn it i dont get the first part and all the tabs are "wrong" on the net

  • @somboku Sounds like you came to the right place! ;) The tabs are available on my site if you need them.

  • @axeofcreation hehe indeed i checked nearly all of your lessons last night.... really nice work... especially the tool stuff but all the other stuff is really informativ... and ...

glad you like the old stuff from hettfield + co. please keep going on to make new stuff

especcialy on scales thats to part im still not through.

    thx. greets from austria

  • @axeofcreation Actually...This is pretty off, as well. The chorus is played completely different.. Granted the notes may sound the same, you have to take into account the brightness of Adam's tone as well...That it sounds as if he might be playing on a higher string, when in reality he's not. You really need to watch much, much more specific live footage to correct your tabs and rhythms. If I had a camera, I'd be able to show you..

  • @coumminesence As well as taking the time to take the track any program, such as Audacity or something even more high quality, to eradicate all other audio and isolate only guitar tracks the best you can. This'll help immensely, as well. Sorry, I'm just really...really picky.

  • @coumminesence Actually, your missing my point. (For me personally) I don't care where Jones or anyone else plays something. So instead of saying Im wrong what I want to hear is that 'you' prefer the tone/timbre of another position. Thanks! Happy new year!

  • @axeofcreation Ah. I understand what you mean, now. I was looking at these videos from a lesson standpoint, is all. In that case, if you were teaching others how the song is actually played and where the correct finger placements are, then I'd say you need to readdress everything. However, if you're only playing the songs the way you feel comfortable, then I couldn't really say you're playing them right OR wrong necessarily, So, I do get your point now. Happy New Year to you. :)

  • @coumminesence In all seriousness you shouldn't get hung up on concepts like "correct fingerings". There's no such thing. Playing on different positions has nothing to do with being correct. The notes are identical. Play where you think it sounds best not because someone else plays it there. Who really cares where Jones "plays" it? Experiment with playing parts in every possible place you can and decide for yourself. Don't let anything dictate how you play besides your ear.

  • @axeofcreation: that's true, however, there are generally certain fingerings that work better than others, whether you're trying to attain a certain tone, or simply because one is easier and more efficient than another fingering. if you need to use a certain fingering for the purposes of an effect, then thats absolute. for ease of playing, it does vary from person to person, but there will still generally be an accepted "best fingering".

  • @chuzzman42 If your playing a classical piece or a chord melody then absolutely there is a correct fingering (because you set your hand up success). Everyone's tone is different. Wood, guitar, amps, pickups all change your tone. You have to experiment with your sound. When it comes to playing Tool where I play parts changes with what I'm playing through. Everything has it's own sound, find yours. Saying that the lesson is wrong and needs revision because of position/fingering is just...silly.

  • @chuzzman42 The perfect example is the solo for Stinkfist. I used to play it in 3rd position. I liked how raw and aggressive it sounded BUT Jones' plays it up in 14 position on the lower strings. I tend to use heavy string gauge so if I play exactly how Jones play it sounds way to low and loses it's rich vocal quality you get playing in a higher position, so I'll play it in 9th position. Sounds great. Now to say that's "wrong" because it's not where Jones plays it? No.

  • would you please do a "Lateralus" lesson it'll be awsome to see very specify as this great lesson...you rock!!!

  • @jamb1232 lateralus is for the most part, pretty easy to play. By "for the most part," I mean the verse/chorus. I haven't played it in a while, but I'm pretty sure it's just that intro part (maybe verse, per se) being made up of that little picking part. The chorus is just power chords I think. If you haven't played it yet, you shouldn't have much trouble with it. But if you look it up there's a lot of vids on it already I think. This guy's vids are definitely above average though.

  • @PeachesAndSkeet The coolest concept they implement in that song is the main riff and how the meter changes 9-8-7. The different polymeter and swing feel in the breakdown can be tricky if your unfamiliar with it. Thanks!

  • @PeachesAndSkeet yes I can play the song but I have a lot of doubts about the solos and the outro, and axeofcreation explains very well like in vicarious..I have playing this song(vicarious) for a long time and he corrects me in some minimal parts and very dificult to hear to my ears...so for beginers its one of the easiest (lateralus) songs to learn form tool but if you know it....you know that its not that simple xD 1,1,2,3,5...

  • @jamb1232 hahah yeah it's easy only in a comparative sense really. Jones is way too idiosyncratic to let me learn anything spot on.... but if it helps any, think of the 9/8-8/8-7/8 time sig's as three super effed up bars of 4/4 (using eighth notes of course). You can really do some creative things with 4/4 time sig's if you can transcend them like that. Might even mess with a drummers head a lil bit :P

  • @jamb1232 but yeah, I mean who the hell gives a 20 minute guitar lesson on youtube? this guy's ****ing great.

  • @jamb1232 yes and thank you!!!

  • III LOOOOVE YYYOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUU

  • @ThePlasmias Thank you. I love you too

  • Thanks dude i really appreciate your work here not many people here on youtube have got to such an effort with explanation and taking us through the song... very thankful just started playing about 4months ago now all i want to do is play Tool and Rage Against the machine....

  • Hey man great video, the only crazy time signature changes I'm used to are a few Floyd songs, so this was tough for me but you broke it down great. Thanks alot!

  • What pickups do you have in your agile? Just the stock alnico 5's or some other?

BTW I have a silverburst al2000. Got it for my Tool needs. hahaha

  • @Parkyy16 Everything is stock. How's it play?

  • @axeofcreation It's great! I have the stock ceramic pickups. I want to change them to the AL 3000 pups since the ceramics are a bit muddy. After that, I just have to replace the nut. The stock is soft black plastic.

Also, thanks for the lessons! :D

  • 1 person doesnt know how to plat guitar.

  • Do you think you could do a tutorial for Schism? :)

  • you are fckin AMAZING!!!

  • Holy shit dude! This is awesome! Tool is my all time favorite band ever. I am obsessed with Tool and I just started playing guitar about a year and a half ago at the age of 30 so I got a late start. Thanks so much for posting this. Just curious, how long have you been playing and how long did it take you to feel completely comfortable playing through a Tool song?

  • @gouda25 Thank you so much! It's never to late!! I've been playing for about 15 yrs. Anemia came out a year or two after I started playing so I've been playing Tool basically since I've started playing. The older material is easier in a way. A little more straight forward and shorter songs.

  • @axeofcreation You live around bay area and give IRL lessons? :D

  • @gouda25 I do teach private lessons although I'm down in the San Diego area. Otherwise, Skype rules!

  • From another Tool fan -- just AWESOME work, man!! Thanks for putting up all the lessons! Trying to learn "Vicarious" right now, but finding lots of useful info in all of them; you have just the right amount of theory and a very straightforward teaching method. Like your style, too. :) Go Axe of Creation, looking forward to new lessons!

  • @melianthefury Very cool! Thank you so much, very much appreciated!!

  • 11.07 :: you say 7 5 3, even though your playing it correctly as 7 3 5, just to save people confusion :p

  • great work man. much respect. Where can I get the tabs?

Thanks for showing me the Jambi riff. It helps when the neighbors bump their Beiber crap.

  • @GOSS4MER Thank you! Just shoot me an email and I'll send them your way!

  • Thanks so much!

I was trying to use tabs but they was screwin' with my mind!

    This helped a heap!!!!!

  • @Anonynomad Awesome!

  • Where are these tabs you are talking about? Because the one's I am using look really wrong. Especially the part when Maynard sings, "Cause I need to watch things die", my tabs say

    -------

    -------

    -------

    -------

    -777778888------

-333333333------ ....I dont think thats right

  • @HerrOttesen Email me and I'll send over the tabs. Those notes are right I just prefer to play the 7, 8 on the D string (2, 3).

  • what kind of les paul are you playing ??

  • @TheBloodcult It's an Agile Les Paul replica. Not sure of the exact model.

  • wow one of the best lessons i ve seen on youtube !!

  • @lefthandovRA Thank you very much.

  • WOW! I sit around watching videos of covers and "learn to play"'s all day while looking up tabs and what not to learn how to play songs. Usually I have to take a little from everywhere to get the sound from the song, but this is by far the best guitar teaching video I have seen, and Ive seen thousands. Thank you for your time to put this up. I love Tool and I love this song, been trying to get it just right for awhile and your video explained it perfectly.

  • @Ikerus0 thanks a lot! I appreciate it. I'm glad my videos can help.

  • @axeofcreation They help a lot! Im not sure if you take any requests for teaching certain songs, but if you are, I would suggest teaching Judith by A Perfect Circle.

  • This guy is fucking straight up awesome. The way you break it down, and the clarity of your playing. I'm really impressed overall with the style/format and skill of your videos, by far the best out there on YouTube. Scoverstreet does good covers to incase someone calls me out ><. Keep on riding the Spiral my friend.

  • @crimsonakd Thank you so much!! So glad I can help. Let me know if you have questions.

  • Hey after watching this a second time I learned it. If u can could u check out my vicarious intro cover that I learned from u and please comment

  • love the sound on tht getar

  • I'm not saying your bad, In my opinion I like teachers to show more stuff than to really talk about, but that's just me, you did an excellent job getting all the notes and everything correct, !!

  • @theTBTbaggers It's all good.

  • @axeofcreation

I'm not saying your bad, your actually the one that I learned this song from, I'm just saying in my opinion I like teachers who show stuff with less talking, you did an excellent job teaching it.

  • Hey axe. Don't listen to tbags. You're a great teacher and I think some of the best instructions you give is when you break down a riff and talk about it in relation to scales, technique, other songs, etc. So keep talking! Oh, and please do the grudge next!

  • @77TOOLarmy Thanks man! No worries though. I'm glad I can help. It's definitely in the que of videos.

  • To much talk , not enough teach.

  • @theTBTbaggers I'll keep that in mind

  • are you sure 12:20 is 5-8, 5-7 instead of 5-7, 5-7 cause i hear it like that

  • @venom146 Pretty sure but I can check it again. Though if thats what you hear and like the sound off then rock it

  • @venom146 I was listening for the 5-7 5-7. That definitely seems to be what going on. Nice find! Thanks

  • @axeofcreation thank you for showing respect and go for the check. i like your videos cause explaination is really needed rather than only showing stuff to realize whats going on there. btw im drummer but thanks to you i can play this song on guitar now and i like it much :)

  • @venom146 No problem. Thanks a lot!

  • thanks this is awesome!!!

  • @carbonquiznoz1 awesome. thanks!!

  • thanks for sharing. enjoyed very much. on my way to TOOL coolness

  • AXE PLEASE DO SOBER BY TOOL

  • @jomarqua it's in the que!

  • Wow... that was a REALLY good lesson. how long did it take you to learn/transcribe that? I have nowhere near that level of focus or dexterity. Keep doin' Tool!

  • @Allitnils Thanks a lot. Certain songs are more difficult to retain than others. This one has a lot of variation and parts so it took a little bit longer than usual.

  • badasss and..The Grudge:p

  • @NotSober100 The Grudge is so good!

  • @axeofcreation that was a request ;p

  • Once again another outstanding lesson. Love your work man. Please keep em coming!

  • @XxUndeniedxX Much Thanks!!

  • have you tried out the song "reflection"? jones' playing sounds really tricky on that song.

  • @Xnaruto0706X yeah. real subtle. Takes advantage of that synth controller he uses.

  • Thanks dude, Tool seems really easy to play,. but if you listen carefully there are a lot of different and totally cool riffs and little nice touches that gives the song the power....damn, Tool are amazing :)

  • @Nick3d Thanks man! Technically it's not that advanced but to truly grasp (and express) all the variation, subtly and dynamics of Tool (Jones' playing) taking real musicianship.

  • oh you`re my hero !!!

  • @dawgghogg111 aww, thank you!

  • Dude, that was awesome! Thanks a lot!

  • @toolami79 No problem, thanks a lot

  • wow,, thanks

  • wow,, thankx

  • @robertone01 Thanks

  • Your videos really deserve more views!

  • @JohnMichaelEllison Thank you.

  • I would love to see some Animals As Leaders of a full Meshuggah song

  • @DOOM666Savage I like your ambition!!!

  • @axeofcreation

Important to note that the first riff isn't a clean tone. It's a heavy tone and palm muted.

  • @Hzqi Yes but would watch out how "heavy" your tone is. It isn't full blown distortion. Going with a "semi-distorted" tone is the way to go. It will add some dirt without overpowering the intro riff as well as allowing the dynamic change when the heavy riff kicks in.

  • Hey pal. I'm really considering buying one of these LP style guitars from Agile. How would you recommend it? I can hear such a beautiful tone from yours. Did you you keep the stock pickups? Thanks

  • @eterpr I would. They make really good guitars. Especially for the price range. Everything is stock on that guitar. Let me know what you end up getting. Thanks!

  • @axeofcreation Just found @ your website you have a band named STEM. Cool stuff man! I just downloaded The .7 Compromise and am going thru it right now.

BTW. Your face looks so familiar. Have you been in Puerto Rico lately?

  • @eterpr Awesome!! I hope you dig the album....I get that a lot but unfortunately I haven't been to PR...

  • Comment removed

  • @axeofcreation That's cool. Keep the good stuff coming!

  • Fantastic lesson. It really helped me out. I would love to see you do a video of Aenema or Third Eye. Those polyrhythms get pretty complex in those songs.

  • @PowerOfTheChestnut Thank you. Anenema is in que. I love third eye but that track is epic!

  • Dude, you are the freakin' MAN. This is how all guitar tutorials should be. Would love to see "The Grudge."

  • @stingerlvl3 Thanks a lot! The Grudge is in que

  • Thank you, this helped me a lot!

  • @juankashi Excellent! I'm glad it helped!

  • Hey are you using a distortion pedal here? If so, which?

  • @TheStrangerInTheRye No. Just my amp.

  • Awesome lesson, man. I thought I knew how to play this but you proved me wrong on several riffs. I've seen just about all of your lessons and they are all great but this is your best tool interpretation yet. You are a talented dude and a great teacher. Keep um coming!

  • @77TOOLarmy thank you, much appreciated!!

  • Thanks for the lesson, now i can play one of my favorite songs. Can you do a lesson how to play the pot?

  • @koker0 Great! I've received a lot of requests for The Pot so I will most likely add that. Thanks!

  • this lesson was awesome, i tried learning that intro everywhere but yours was the best

  • @Battlescar2 Much appreciated!

  • Thanks a lot, but it was kinda in delay ><

I've already managed to learn that tricky triplet in the end

  • hehe youre vicariously teaching people guitar : D (Ba Doom Tshh)

  • Thanks for the lesson. May I ask what amp and what settings you are using because this sounds awesome.

  • @trash266001 For this lesson I just used my 15w Line 6 practice amp, metal setting. Don't remember what I specifically tweaked the setting to. Most likely boosted the Bass/Treble then fine tuned the Mids.

  • Tonight i will be in the presence of Maynard James Keenan and A Perfect circle cannot wait
