This is such a cool song - definitely a bit of a Magical Mystery Tour rip-off, but still awesome (who wasn't ripping off the beatles in 1967?) Amazing that the same band would go on to record the greatest dance songs of all time
@the Gibbs brothers @ 19,18, and 17 yrs old released their 1st grestest hits lp1968,then in73 did '' nights on broadway'' restarting their career, next to the beatles, they [bee gees] are the biggest selling recording artists in HISTORY!!!!!!!!
Yeah there disco stuff was incredibly popular and therefore great, just like the painting of dogs playing poker. Incredibly popular therefore a great work of art. I just don't understand why it's not hanging in the louvre.
I've never heard this song before today and I like it. I have been a fan since the 45 release of I've Got To Get A Message To You. The early years was my favorite music by the Bee Gees. Peace.
Of course they sound a bit like the Beatles... From the same time period, same country... This song is pretty interesting. I haven't checked out much of their older stuff.
@spatoon Oh, yea, they spent 9 or 10 years in Australia, but when did their musical careers really take off? I'm pretty much just talking about their international hits that began in 1967, when they returned to England...
@spatoon Born in England and they were/are proud to call themselve British as they often have. Most Assies are British anyhow they still bow to our Queen. lol
@spatoon Barry, Robin and Maurice were born in Douglas, The Isle of Man They moved to Manchester, England just before Andy was born in 1958. They emigrated to Australia when Barry was about 9 yrs at the suggestion of the Manchester police. After 13 records, all flops in Australia they talked their parents into going back to England so they could have a chance at being famous. It worked.
This was one of my favorite early Bee Gees tunes, as my mom had this record back in the day (I would later own my own copy, the CD copy has "Tomorrow, Tomorrow" in place of "Spicks and Specks".).
I think what I don't like the most about their disco stuff is that it makes them sound dated or kitschy, whereas stuff like this has a very timeless quality to it.
@EmpZappa66 Actually the Bee Gees never wrote Disco stuff. They were recording songs for a new album when Stigwood asked for music for SNF. They literally gave him their new album plus wrote a few more songs. The U.S. made those "Disco" songs because of the time period and the movie and then hated the Bee Gees for all Disco. IMO I find a timeless quality to all their music. They are simply the most talented songwriters of our time.
Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You [Stereo Version] - Bee Gees [Brisbane, Queensland, Australia] - 1967 - "Sure sounds like a Gregorian chant at times with this light Psychedelic Pop song." - The Studio Albums 1967-1968 [Box Set] (Reprise) - Bee Gees' 1st [Disc 1]-2006.

The Bee Gees 1st is definitly a great buy! I love their psychedelic era, very underrated work of theirs. Though i have never enjoyed their disco and R&B era, im still grateful of them to out out such wonderful music for us all.. good work Bee Gees:)
Which of the brothers, if any is it hat sings te opening lyrics, "Go Solo Dominique?" And in such a deep voice, and what are hte instrumentsdoing the begining, and who is it that does that low toned humming at the end as the hand drums signify someone walking away?

The humming again sound like the same monk calling by all three, but Maurice had the deepest bass voice range so therefore it would most likely be him at the end - if it is one voice.
I was always a fan of theirs and even more so for being nice to my dad when my dad worked as a bellhop at the Waldorf. Of course my dad was much older and they were always respectful young men as my dad would always say. My dad had coffee with Maurice Gibb not long after the passing of their brother Andy. May Andy and Maurice rest in peace. My dad liked all of them that's good enough for me.
I so love this song, and the early Bee Gees! Their first album amazed me. Before that I knew only stuff like Jive Talkin' and Stayin Alive. I was happy to discover the other side of Bee Gees, and I dig it!
They had kind of a Moody Blues feel to them in this song, especially in the breaks with the strings and the singers! I love this album, I have it on a very nice vinyl copy!
Bee Gees at every stage of their career have been associated with great music/songwriting. From their early pop/pop rock/protoprog days thru their disco era.......
I grew up with this album. always moved by this song. want to record it. But what ARE they saying in the beginning? It can't be "Oh solo dominique". I mean. why. It's a reference to C.S. Lewis, of course. Loved The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, too.
Well said Veg, why should any band be afraid to change? the Bee Gees had the ability to write and perform a variety of music. More power to them, if you look at some of the comments here on you tube, a great number of people remember their disco period as the finest time of theit life.
@17DJLOVER And why shouldn't they? It was all about getting together and having fun. No violence, no hate. I think people who hate disco are the same type who are unwilling to try new foods or accept people into their homes because they are not the same. The Bee Gees are very dynamic and everything they've attempted was successful. I do not necessarily enjoy how disco became over marketed and commercialized but even rock has become so.
Why do people condemn artists for "selling out," when they make music for the masses? It's difficult enough to make a living as a musician/artist. As business owners, we "sell out" every day to make more money. It's called marketing. Nice to hear some of their earlier work, but nothing wrong with their disco stuff either! It makes (some) people sing and dance and nostalgic for that era. Good for them!
coloradowinter is a half wit, bands always want to change direction, they simply disappear if they do not. The r&b sectionof the Bee Gees career was by far their most successful in every way. They started to produce and write for other artists, and sold millions and millions, just because you did not enjoy that period, it does not mean others disliked it too. I think any band that can have the diversity in their songwriting and ability to move on deserves credit, not criticism!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
They did a lot of good stuff before they fell into the Disco trap. Check out The New York Mining Disaster 1941 and Lonely Days, Lonely Nights. Damn shame they went disco and forfeited their credibility.
hahahahaa i think it sounds satanic too. i absolutely love it, and the dead dude on (our/the) right hand side in the pic totally has the face of satan as i imagine satan to look too!
I never noticed before but, there are some harmonies that sound very much like the Stones/Jager or vise versa. I heard in in To Love Somebody as well. I'm sure it's just an artifact of the period.
There was an Aussie who with his friend, saved a lion cub from a small cage.. you can see the video here (youtube) search for Christian the Lion. Adamson was involved in the release to Africa. Great story.
I believe this song was written about George Adamson, the "Lion Man" of Kenya who w/his wife helped Christian the Lion adapt to life in the wild after living w/caretakers in London. If you search for Christian the Lion reunion you can see it. Adamson and his wife were murdered by lion poachers.
I dearly loved both the Adamsons and the Bee Gees, it never occurred to me this song binds them together, never seen the 3 brothers drawn to the African eden. I strongly feel the song rising from their childhood christian memories.
The mellotron on this(the three note downward phrase leading in the "chanting" voices) is extremely simple, but effective nonetheless. It was played by Maurice using the "three violins" tapeset on a Mk.II Mellotron - if I recall correctly, he used the tron on three or four other cuts on this album. Even though Stigwood's production of this album is simply awful, it serves as a stark reminder that the BeeGees existed before Disco, and what a talent they possessed for vocal melody and harmony.
My favorite Bee Gees song from the 6o's. This is one of the first songs of their's I heard. Simply an amazing sound. Great compilation album cover too.
Love this song, used to sing it with a band called Dock Ellis a few years back. Also covered by Alice Donut featuring the amazing Stephen Moses on drums (also in Dock Ellis). Great great song! Thanks for sharing. Love, Billy

As a kid I was listening to this song when some folks came by looking for my parents and they heard this song and were positive it was satanic.

There was an Aussie who with his friend, saved a lion cub from a small cage.. you can see the video here (youtube) search for Christian the Lion. Adamson was involved in the release to Africa. Great story.
Cool Song.

Great song! I love the droning at the beginning!

It is difficult to believe that it is the Bee Gees. What a masterpiece. This is simply an example of great early prog rock.....

Love this song, used to sing it with a band called Dock Ellis a few years back. Also covered by Alice Donut featuring the amazing Stephen Moses on drums (also in Dock Ellis). Great great song! Thanks for sharing. Love, Billy
