I meant why modern-versions of the instruments. The flute dates back 30,000 years or more. All-metal flutes with articulated stops? Renaissance period flutes were wood and had only finger holes..

Well, a sailor's flute is rather difficult to find. Entirely metal, but no articulation. And the line has to be drawn somewhere.
