At 0:50 if you stop it right at the right moment you can see his finger taped. It is due to his vibrato, which actually tore the nail from the skin. He would change the center of pitch during his vibrato, and eventually this was the result.
Fame is not everything in life... jury panels and critics should be least concern of a superstar like Shafran... he didn't incorporate a certain logic of political visibility, showmanship and charisma that has nothing to do with musicianship... he is the greatest!
Recommend everyone to read about Shafran more. Rastropovich and Shafran are even level talents. Not my words! He was recognized by many great players.
this unbelieveble cello sound... soooooo goood! I say this as a cellist and a fan of this incredible genius... I m SOOO sorry He is already Out There...
It's such a joy watching (and listening) to Shafran play, he should have received as much recognition as Rostropovich if he had the same amount of outside-Russia exposure. I'd love more from Shafran on YouTube, please...anyone?
He was, is, and still will be recognized around the world. Unfortunately, you and I are victims of both US and USSR propaganda. Rostropovich escape Soviet Union, while Shafran staid there. So, the powerful western media undermined Shafran, or they did not exposed his works. As far as playing outside of Soviet Union, he had played all over the world. Besides, among the best cello talents, he was considered one of the top best players, if not the best. I've read a book about Shafran.
Sorry for the comment but you can not compare Ma or Rostro with Shafra, not only because they are very diferent, because Shafran is UNIQUE and technically and artistically far from them. Life is short...why care about not as good things is you can listen THE BEST?
Well as a dedicated Shafran fan I agree with you, only let's not readily discount the great, although different, renditions of Rostropovich and Ma. Those really are ones to cherish and you've done very well listening to them as well
Waw! Just the best Dvorak I never heard! What a power, what a sound! What I was doing all this years listening the Rostropovich, Ma, Maisky, and other versions! That's how the Dvorak must sound like!
Like I've commented earlier, Shafran is recognized by the world best players as best. Ma, Rastropovich, considered him as virtuous of cello players. And not like earlier comment about Mr. Ma, that he is one.. or something like that, Ma himself considered Shafran grater talent than himself. Unfortunately, you, me, others were victims in propaganda war, and because of that, we did not hear much about Danny Shafran. He did played in S.F., N.Y., L.A., Paris, London, Vienna, Milan. *blame media.

I think Shafran is one of the most underrated cellists of all time compared to all of the greats. He never got enough recognition

I heard that the taped finger was because he practiced so much that the pad of his finger became raw... Either way, what an incredible cellist!
