  • Gosford Park. Marvelous film.

  • We sung this song in Iraq for no real reason other than for laughs. The Americans loved it. Good times

  • Wonderful Thankyou

  • So beautiful, I adore this song. It always bring on tears...

  • Excellent testament to the solidarity of a people during war, on and off the fronts of conflict

  • Weird thing is that he was burnt to death when his house caught on fire......ironic.

  • LEST WE FORGET RULE BRITANNIA WRTP

  • fuck the Kaiser

  • @gobanito thats the spirit! :P

  • Always a moving song. A recent book "The Great Wrong War" is just out and is worth reading. Admittedly, about New Zealand but still an interesting book about the conflict.

  • Does this song have anything to do with Metallica's - One at the very end? If not, can someone give me a link or the song title to the song at the end of Metallica - One.

  • The world was different then, Great War was a milestone, since then generals changed they view of the troops and war lost its ancient glory, but sadly megalomaniacs in so called democratic northern contries still begin war with lies e.g. mass murder weapons. lol, Look for "Johnny get your gun", it inspired the book "Johnny got his gun", in wich a character sings the choir of this song

  • katmack94...How old ru?....It's NOT cool.Your great Uncle was encouraging kids like you to go and die in a fucking useless war that killed 9 million men and women. You are fucking lucky to be alive to write this.

  • I walk past the house where Ivor Novello was born every day. This is a lovely recording of this song - makes me proud to be Welsh! Thanks for posting it.

  • who's Ivor Novello?

  • @crakersandcheeze - The man who wrote this song. He was an actor and songwriter. He appeared in several British movies in the 1920s (including Hitchcock's 'The Lodger'), and went on to write popular musicals, but this song is the one he's probably most famous for.

  • @dylanwildlevel There is a seldom performed play called "Forever, Ivor" that was performed in Washington DC in 1994. Also, the patriotism of the song was a subject of some derision from the soldiers at the "front" in the last year of the Great War

  • I post this link to all of my personal sites, and ask everyone to contact their local radio stations and ask that they play it daily until ALL of ther troops are safely home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Thank You!

  • Well done Johnny- you are a national hero.

Of particular signficance is the fact that you replace the lines with a more internationally acceptable 'For no gallant son of Britain' with 'For no gallant son of freedom' and 'And no Englishman is silent' with 'And the noble heart must answer to the sacred call...'

Otherwise it would be a BNP/UKIP anthem.

  • I live in Argentina and my dad always sung it, ...and he was from london. Fought in worldwar II and arrived to this country in 45. What memories, I remember him singing this and other world I &II songs, I miss him

  • I have to say, I did not realize this gentleman wrote all these good songs.

  • Comment removed

  • John McCormack did not write the song... he only ang it. Ivor Novello was the one who composed it.

  • this is sooo cool! he is my Great great uncle!!! :)

  • Makes me miss my dad

  • respect to all who have lost !

  • amen

  • It's Ivor Novello, that's why it's good. It's sad that songs like this have been so hijacked by parties like the BNP, they really deserve so much more! I think it's time for a renewed appreciation for Ivor Novello, who's with me?

  • lengewolf it is SAD the war to end all wars. this was a big sacrifice. we lost a whole generation and some of the best. However everyone did their duty. yes and it was the 1914-1918 not '17 -'18 ! only America was in that short of time.Canada had Billy Bishop!

  • Dear patriot,

I'm happy you put the lyrics on so I can understand the bad times of WW1

  • It's sad that this generation has FORGOTTEN agony and slaughter of 1914-1918. Laugh at millions dead, fool, and make Iraq possible.

  • How odd i looked this up three minutes after you when nobody else seems to. Agree with your statement.
