@d0Bored0b Lavender town is a reasonable place to hunt for Cubone, yes, but I think it's more than likely Gary went there to bury his Pokemon, and decided to clear his mind by trying to find another companion to replace him while there (like all pet owners or Pokemon masters do.) So while he was there burying his dead Raticate, he decided to hunt for a Cubone (i.e. your Pokemon don't look >>dead<<... I caught a Cubone.). Good theory, though, on your part.
