a cloudy day doesn't mean you're safe from uv rays, because... well, it is daytime. just because you can't see the sun, doesn't mean it's not there. and i don't understand why you people always use that vitamin D thing as an excuse. we get plenty of vitamin D with our food. we don't need to risk our health and looks to provide it. besides sunblocks DO protect the skin and help the whole tanning process. when you're on the beach and wear sunblock you do tan right? you don't have to use spf 50+
Your logic is ridiculous. Paler skin absorbs vitamin D more efficiently, which is why white people need less sun exposure and suffer the consequence of prolonged exposure to the sun, i.e premature aging and melanoma. By contrast people with darker skin absorb Vitamin D less efficiently and those living in colder climates are prone to Vitamin D deficiency, which results in rickets and cancer. It's not a matter of inherent superiority or inferiority, but entirely to do with evolutionary context.
Kerryket: Also there are many variables that enter into the total picture. Like nutrition, exercise, proper rest, genetics, personality, etc. Then to subtly imply that everyone is going to get cancer because you did is ridiculous. I am sorry you got skin cancer but don't spoil the party for everbody else. That would be like having a big party and then telling everybody to go home because you drank to much and got sick. I hope your operation doesn't leave much scarring.
Kerryket: Some people do get cancer. It's a fact of life. The risk increases with age. The key is "sensible" sun exposure. If you go outside every day for hours on end and get repeatedly burned year after year you are asking for trouble. Also you need to build a tan gradually to protect against burning. It sounds to me like you didn't use your head and got burned over and over again. So why should the people who sensibly tan and receive the sun's health benefits listen to a word you say.
my mom's been tanning for like 28 years, and she still looks like she's 25. no wrinkles at all. no skin cancer. nothing at all. she looks better than a lot girls that are in their 20's. and she hasn't had surgery or gotten botox either. she looks amazing. everything these days is bad for you. but you can't live under a rock, that isn't healthy either. its ironic how they tell us to avoid the sun, yet its something we need to live and feel good. i don't buy into any of it. liesss.
like i was humping my mom? ok then.. i was just saying what other people have told me, she doesn't look her age, and has been tanning for many years. i know a lot of people who have tanned for ever, and none of this happened to them. i'm not saying yeah go out and tan all the time! but you can't avoid the sun either. just be sensable about it.
The American Academy of Dermatology and the sunscreen industry have been working hand in hand spreading propaganda about the dangers of the sun for years now. They are spreading lies. Do not believe them. The sun is necessary for health. If you want healthy children with strong bones and bodies, let them play in the sun without sunscreen. Also the sun is good for eye health. Sunglasses prevent the sun from reaching the eyes.
sun screen has also been proven to be one of the biggest cause of skin cancer because of its ingredients. The sun carries vitamin D, which helps prevent skin cancer. So, if you stay in the sun, you can benefit. If you dont want sun burns, wear something to cover yourself. The sun is very healthy though.
the sun is not benefical!!! it can kill you and the vitamin D that you get from the sun is not enough to sustain a healthy diet and definiatly not enough to prevent cancer!
I love it when idiots try to act like they know what they are talking about. Do you homework. You brainwashed follower. The only way to get the reccomended daily dose of vitamin D is by drinking 50 glasses of milk, taking 10 supplements, or 20-30 min of Sun (UVB) exposure. First 2 will make you sick. The Sun (or tanning beds) is the only "Healthy" way to get the vitamin D you need!!
you're absolutely right. its the only way to get the recommended amount of vitamin D. in fact, having the recomended amounts of vitamin d, decreases the chance of getting like 17 different types of cancer. like prostate cancer in males. i work at a tanning salon and have a bunch of articles with studies like this. the sun is actually good and healthy for you!
its the only way to get the recommended amount of vitamin D? Tanning salons (with the tanning beds) are a joke, its scientifically proven that they can cause cancer.
if you aren't sensible about it. people who over do it, could end up with it. but there was also a study done saying that people who had the deadliest type of skin cancer actually had a faster rate of recovering, and didn't get it as bad that had higher levels of vitamin D than the non tanners. you need vitamin D. period. and food alone can't give you as much as you need. that's also scientifically proven. everything now days is bad for you. but you can't avoid everything and live under a rock.
I see a lot of people tanning by getting physically burnt and expecting to be browner the next day (burning and pain is the body's way of saying, fuck this isn't good for me). You still absorb vitamin D even if you use sunscreen while out in the sun, and its minus the absorption of UVA and UVB rays which are the ones that cause the damage.
Simply - Fake tan (bottled, spray or whatever, not tanning bed) + suncreen while out in sun = healthy vitamin D intake.
actually you don't absorb vitamin D while using sunscreen. it blocks it. UVB is the ray that burns you and is more dangerous than UVA. since the whole skin cancer scare, sunscreen has been flying off the shelf, but guess what else. skin cancer has also been on the rise. vitamin D can help protect you against skin cancer actually. so by blocking it out, it can in turn be what's actually causing the cancer. it's not preventing it. i've been working with this for the last 2 1/2 years.
True, I apologise, after a bit of research I sunscreen indeed blocks vitamin D absorption. Though I also found out that the original commenter was completely off with their '50 glasses of milk or 10 supplements' idea on the recommended intake of vitamin D. Also your idea that vitamin D protecting against skin cancer is false, I couldn't find any backing evidence for that statement. I did, however, find many saying sunscreen is a very effective prevention method. (wiki it up)
Wikipedia isn't always a reliable source though. anyone can alter that information. i have pamphlets, and brochures, and magazines at work about the vitamin D being linked to the prevention of cancer. maybe its just exclusive to us though or something because its so new and not yet introduced into the community. and i should add that vitamin D doesn't come directly from the sun, your body produces it when UV rays hit the skin. so when you wear sunblock and block those rays you aren't producing a
it. i do agree, sunscreen is a good thing to use once in a while if you are in sunlight a lot of the time. but you don't need it ALL the time, and you don't need it in the winter. we hardly see any sunlight, and winter time is when a lot of us are vitamin D deficient.
Good for you. Go join your other albino freaks and hide under a rock all day if the sun is the most dangerous thing since the invention of the wheel
