That's 99! Lotus and McLaren were using the same Honda engine. Only the cars of the Lotus was 5 mph slower than cars Maclaren. Piquet was very nervous and angry about it. This led him to make mistakes.
The 100T had very little improvements, and just a smaller nosecone.
Maybe it was 5mph slower on some straights. But straightline speed never won anybody a F1 race. BAR often clocked the highest top speeds in the races, but they never won any race.
Piquet was just angry McLaren signed Senna, while he got to drive Ayrton's old car, which he was convinced he could do a much better work with...
This is not 1988 (sorry if someone said it already).
As for the MS discussion, I'm not a MS fan, but it's too early to judge him performance. 3 years pause is a lot. Remember when Lauda stopped for 3-4 years and needed 2 years to get back up to speed. And while he was never at the speed of Prost, his vast experience helped him compensate. I don't see a reason why MS can't do the same. It's all about motivation really.
He wouldve ate most of the current grid alive if he was at his peak. What he has now is a fantastic knowledge of car setup, pulling a team together and how to win races. Those ingredients alone can still make him a contender.
McLarenMercedes - I said Schumacher was past his best, not - 'he's past it'. Also, why are you comparing eras where the physical stresses and speeds where vastly different? Its chalk and cheese. Now youre talking about past boxers lol. Schumacher once upto speed with the car setup without an understeer characteristic will be very very fast again, but hes not as sharp as he was in 1995 for example, this is because he's a human being.
McLarenMercedes - Theres no point in comparing Nico with Michael right now, as Michael is considerably away from his peak. Its actually a really clumsy remark for someone one talks about f1 a lot. You should know better.
Fangio was 40 when he won his first title in 1951 and 46 when he won his last in 1957. He was beating young, fast guys in their 20's. Stirling Moss was 18 years younger than Fangio when he was his team mate in Mercedes.
Jack Brabham was 40 when he won his third title in 1966, and nearly defended it in 1967. In 1970 he was almost champion aged 44, but his team screwed up the fuel calculations which lost him some races he'd won.
If he is past his peak then why the hell did he make a comeback in the first place?
Prost retired as champion in 1993, although he knew he didn't want to race Senna in the Williams in 1994. Jackie Stewart had some good years left in him but chose to retire as champion in 1973.
Quit while you are ahead. Had Schumacher been smart he'd retire at the end of 2004, knowing nobody could ever beat his record. Like Rocky Marciano in boxing.
@McLarenMercedes Some people love to race. People who get to this level love to race. That is why they drive LeMans, Baja, Paris Dakar, etc. after they leave F1. Sometimes it isn't enough, and they come back.
Nelson Piquet, 3 times world champion. He taught Benetton how to build competitive cars. When he was there, already very experienced.
Champion in a time that was more difficult to win a championship. The pilots made more difference in the results of the races. Nowadays, just a good car, and someone becomes champion.
Those who have only 20 years old do not know it!. They think Button is a genius, Hamilton also. Who saw Senna, Prost, Lauda, Mansell, Gilles Villeneuve, etc., is not fooled.
@FukEmUp145 might of been a combination of both too much throttle and a bump. CART cats had a qualifie trim power of like 1200hp. Those car would kick around super speedways at near 260mph!!
i was at this race! I remeber the camera that they mounted on the car to get that shot. I went to every Detroit Grand Prix they had with f1. I'll never forget them. I love the cars back then and this track was the best even though the drivers hated it. Snobby !!!!!!

I think the fact that he went offline trying to pass that car, combined with the fact that the track was as dusty as hell and he was driving with a big ass turbo engine, meant that he just spun like a spinning top.
Can't blame Nelson entirely for that one - check out the spray on the lens as he approaches the Ligier before passing - gave his tyres a good dousing in fluid.
What are the 2 dark lines in front of Nelson before he goes off. Looks like oil and rubber from a sliding car previously. Did the car in front slow down in a hurry as well as he had a much better veiw than PK

that 88 lotus was such an evil handling car. Poor suspension setup. They should've kept the active suspension setup and carried on with development.

did Lotus have the technology, money and time available to perfect it back in 1988?
how about the software? as usual Lotus were ahead of time with inventions
Williams perfected it in their 1992 and 1993 cars years later.
I think by 1988 Lotus were already a bit short on money.
