  • When you look at the area of road between the tires and the cockpit, doesn't it look the car's floating?

  • I love this circuit, I wish F1 could return there.

  • j'adore son casque.... i love his helmet...

  • Turbocharged f1 will revive in 2014...with 1.6 V6 single turbo but more efficiency and clean...force induction is back..

  • @brianjgtc90s is this confirmed by the Fia or just word on the street ??

  • @mushrume Many of them like Ferrari opposed the 4 cylinder 1.6 turbo supposedly confirm by FIA...2013 actually...and most of them turn FIA down. so suggestion of V6, and mostly agree with new 1.6 turbo v6...This will begin 2014...confirm

  • Piquet, the best!!!

  • I bet if they raced at detroit now, everyone would be mugged on even the track. :P

  • Easy on the throttle mate!

  • how many power ?

  • Piquet admitted that it was driver error. He still had cold tyres and hit the gas too hard.

  • That's 99! Lotus and McLaren were using the same Honda engine. Only the cars of the Lotus was 5 mph slower than cars Maclaren. Piquet was very nervous and angry about it. This led him to make mistakes.

  • @helcio1960

    Senna drove the Lotus-Honda 99T in 1987.

    Piquet drove the Lotus-Honda 100T in 1988.

The 100T had very little improvements, and just a smaller nosecone.

Maybe it was 5mph slower on some straights. But straightline speed never won anybody a F1 race. BAR often clocked the highest top speeds in the races, but they never won any race.

Piquet was just angry McLaren signed Senna, while he got to drive Ayrton's old car, which he was convinced he could do a much better work with...

  • @IVegtamI Also because he's pretty much past the exit of a not very sharp corner. Doesnt seem like he would get power oversteer there.

  • Na końcu JEBIE! :D Nie no musiało coś być :D xD ;P

  • This is not 1988 (sorry if someone said it already).

As for the MS discussion, I'm not a MS fan, but it's too early to judge him performance. 3 years pause is a lot. Remember when Lauda stopped for 3-4 years and needed 2 years to get back up to speed. And while he was never at the speed of Prost, his vast experience helped him compensate. I don't see a reason why MS can't do the same. It's all about motivation really.

  • He wouldve ate most of the current grid alive if he was at his peak. What he has now is a fantastic knowledge of car setup, pulling a team together and how to win races. Those ingredients alone can still make him a contender.

  • McLarenMercedes - I said Schumacher was past his best, not - 'he's past it'. Also, why are you comparing eras where the physical stresses and speeds where vastly different? Its chalk and cheese. Now youre talking about past boxers lol. Schumacher once upto speed with the car setup without an understeer characteristic will be very very fast again, but hes not as sharp as he was in 1995 for example, this is because he's a human being.

  • McLarenMercedes - Theres no point in comparing Nico with Michael right now, as Michael is considerably away from his peak. Its actually a really clumsy remark for someone one talks about f1 a lot. You should know better.

  • Juan Manuel Fangio won his 5 titles in his 40's.

Fangio was 40 when he won his first title in 1951 and 46 when he won his last in 1957. He was beating young, fast guys in their 20's. Stirling Moss was 18 years younger than Fangio when he was his team mate in Mercedes.

Jack Brabham was 40 when he won his third title in 1966, and nearly defended it in 1967. In 1970 he was almost champion aged 44, but his team screwed up the fuel calculations which lost him some races he'd won.

  • If he is past his peak then why the hell did he make a comeback in the first place?

Prost retired as champion in 1993, although he knew he didn't want to race Senna in the Williams in 1994. Jackie Stewart had some good years left in him but chose to retire as champion in 1973.

Quit while you are ahead. Had Schumacher been smart he'd retire at the end of 2004, knowing nobody could ever beat his record. Like Rocky Marciano in boxing.

  • @McLarenMercedes Some people love to race. People who get to this level love to race. That is why they drive LeMans, Baja, Paris Dakar, etc. after they leave F1. Sometimes it isn't enough, and they come back.

  • grande piquet con dos huevos por fuera el puto amo

  • a faszom franciák nem képesek befogni a mocskos csigazabáló pofájukat??? :@

  • Nelson Piquet, 3 times world champion. He taught Benetton how to build competitive cars. When he was there, already very experienced.

Champion in a time that was more difficult to win a championship. The pilots made more difference in the results of the races. Nowadays, just a good car, and someone becomes champion.

Those who have only 20 years old do not know it!. They think Button is a genius, Hamilton also. Who saw Senna, Prost, Lauda, Mansell, Gilles Villeneuve, etc., is not fooled.

  • got dam.....bumpy pavement took him out.....or that car he passed. Still though, good drive'in!

  • Too much throttle ;) Good old Turbo F1, in qualifying trim around 1300hp.

  • @FukEmUp145 might of been a combination of both too much throttle and a bump. CART cats had a qualifie trim power of like 1200hp. Those car would kick around super speedways at near 260mph!!

  • Piquet is a great pilito of f1 turbo era

  • I would say this really looks like Valencia.

  • This track looked like an old version of Marina Bay or Valencia. It's good to see they had boring artificial street tracks in the '80s too. XD

  • 80's were the *ERA* of the street artificial tracks ;-)

  • Gee, it's really true, then, EVERYTHING was tacky in the 80's! Even the racing!!

  • that 88 lotus was such an evil handling car. Poor suspension setup. They should've kept the active suspension setup and carried on with development.

  • did Lotus have the technology, money and time available to perfect it back in 1988?

how about the software? as usual Lotus were ahead of time with inventions

Williams perfected it in their 1992 and 1993 cars years later.

I think by 1988 Lotus were already a bit short on money.

  • 1:43 6 seconds of black with poor lights, totally crazy by nowdays standard :D

  • Nelson Piquet 3x World Champ in the 1980s - the golden age of Formula 1.

  • "piruet" :D

  • quelle brochette

  • Senna »»»»»»»»»» Piquet

  • What a amazing track!

  • @Colvalan410 the guy talking thinks its very bland makes fun of the 90 degree turns right after the other

  • Nelson Piquet Now IS 57 Years Old???

  • One doesn't enjoy being pedantic - but he's 56.

  • these cars had clutch pedal ?

  • Amazing track!

  • what age for nelson piquet now???

  • 17/08/1952...

  • If anyone was at this race before or lives in Detroit, please contact me

  • i was at this race! I remeber the camera that they mounted on the car to get that shot. I went to every Detroit Grand Prix they had with f1. I'll never forget them. I love the cars back then and this track was the best even though the drivers hated it. Snobby !!!!!!

  • Really cool track!!!Wish they´d still race on this track!

  • right at the start the way pique came out of the pits he would of been penalized in todays rule for going over the line.

  • the car would have also be banned for having a turbo engine by todays rule.

  • LOL

  • @IVegtamI , yep, for now. But I heard turbo engines return in a few years.

  • @opo1993 also this car had active suspension which is also banned by todays rules

  • A shame that you have to hear those 2 gaylord french commentators, shut up already.

  • Well maybe you should try to learn the language that way you could understand what there saying.

  • I understand perfectly french just in case you didn't know. Frenchman from france have this nagging accent, shut up and let us hear the whine of the V6 Honda.

  • Vocês são sao paulinos?

  • very nice track!!!

  • That track looks really narrow at times. Not much wider than the first year that Champ Car raced in San Jose.

  • this is actually not qualifying... it's footage from the documentary called "lap of the gods". it was the first experiments done with this type of camera and the experiments were done during the practice sessions and during some tests too... find it if you can...

  • Damon Hill was the first son of an F1 Champion to also win the championship.

Something Piquet Jr will never manage, mainly because of his inability to drive under any kind of pressure. Basically...he's shite.

  • Nico Rosberg might very well be the next. He is currently 2nd in the 2010 championship easily beating Michael Schumacher.

Mercedes are designing a B-version of this years car to challenge the top teams.

  • I liked this track a lot for some reason!

  • It's brilliant. I play it on F1 05 on the PS2 in a Williams FW11. Proper old-school.

  • We will see this hopefully in Valencia!!!

  • never

  • I wish the commentators would shut up...that engine sounds nice, from what I can hear!!

  • auuups!!!!

  • I think it's too early to say his son can't drive....give him more time.

  • yeah... its his first year... even senna and schumacher werent the best when they came to f1

  • ure right about that.... 2nd in Germany =D

Ok was a fluke but if he was crap he would of spun out in pressure

  • ovcurse he can drive, are YOU an F1 driver?

  • I think the fact that he went offline trying to pass that car, combined with the fact that the track was as dusty as hell and he was driving with a big ass turbo engine, meant that he just spun like a spinning top.

  • hahah WOW. i wasnt even expecting that...as i dont speak french....big moment..i agree maybe oil or just dirty road with turbo engine

  • Can't blame Nelson entirely for that one - check out the spray on the lens as he approaches the Ligier before passing - gave his tyres a good dousing in fluid.

Oh and just for the record - Long Beach GP.

  • Its not long beach 100%

    I think its detroit.

  • Detroit that is correct

  • he must have hit a bit of oil as you hear the engine peak in an instant

  • He was passing the Ligier... who knows? Maybe it was Arnoux, who's infamous for not moving over, and Nelson might have been tagged from behind.

  • @afotiad just off line on cold tyres...

  • @afotiad

he also might have hit a bit of throttle pedal

  • @launger

what are those 2 big black lined in front of him as he crashes. Looks like oil dragged acress the track by another car previously.

  • @launger

What are the 2 dark lines in front of Nelson before he goes off. Looks like oil and rubber from a sliding car previously. Did the car in front slow down in a hurry as well as he had a much better veiw than PK

  • This is Nelson Piquet in the Lotus Honda 100T in 1988 at the United States Grand Prix in Detroit. The Phoenix street circuit never had a tunnel section.

  • This is actually from 1989

  • lol what r u talking about? This is really 1988 because in 1989, the USGP was held in Phoenix ^^ and in 1989, they hadn't mounted cameras on the top and would instead have radio cameras on the side for some teams.

  • It's from a video called lap of the gods. A must for any F-1 fan, and yes, 1988. No turbo in 89.

  • The engine note clearly indicates this car is a turbo and since this is Detroit and it is Piquet driving a Lotus - it must be 1988.

  • Ok, it can be from 1988, whatever. What really matters is that Piquet is the all-time best.

    :-)

  • Yah pretty much, moved to the dirty side to overtake, shows over.. pretty funny how you can put so much effort into a lap and it takes 10th of a second to f*ck it up

  • Too much throttle on dirty part... Next year TC will be forbidden, we will se who is good driver...

  • detroit is a good USA circuit

  • That was quite the circuit.

  • What happened? Did Piquet collide with the slower car or did he put on too much throttle too soon?

  • I think he put on too much throttle and since those cars didn't have Traction Control, he spun and collided on the concrete.

  • Looks like he put the power down too hard/early or maybe a slippery patch on the track? By his reaction, he seemed surprised, Ouch!!

  • Great man!!! I love it!!! Post some more onboards from 1988 :D
